Product Description

A robot that defies gravity?! that's what you get with air-walker, a four-legged Bot that uses an ingenious system of suction cups and pumps to crawl along smooth, vertical surfaces like windows. A follow-up to the award-winning geckobot STEM experiment kit, air-walker uses technology similar to that found in its reptilian predecessor, but with easier assembly. Your air-walker can crawl in a straight line, to the left, or to the right, while a special mechanism makes the robot's head move back and forth as its body moves forward. You can also build four other models with the same components and learn how suction and mechanical devices can be used in different real-world applications. A vacuum-suction machine sticks to and lifts flat panels, while a robot with just two suction cups rotates around a central pivot point. This hands-on construction kit brings engineering and physics to life as it demonstrates the power of air pressure at work. A 32-page, full-color manual guides your model building and experiments with clear step-by-step illustrated instructions.

How Does It Work?

The Air-Walker's 'feet' are suction cups, connected to the motor box. When you turn the motor on, air is sucked from between the climbing surface and the suction cups, resulting in negative pressure there. This means that the air pressure that exists there is lower than the environmental air pressure all around it. This negative pressure ensures the Air-Walker stays stuck to a smooth surface, because basically the entire pressure of the atmosphere above the suction cups is pushing them toward the surface, while there is virtually no pressure pushing them away. Want to make your robot change direction? Just turn the dial on Air-Walker's back!

The Models

In addition to the Air-Walker model, kids can build four other models with the same components: a vacuum-suction machine sticks to and lifts flat panels; the Crawler pulls itself along on its two front feet, looking as if it's moving along on its belly; the Simple Walker scoots forward with two suction cups; and the Sideways Walker walks to the side in a circle, rotating around a central pivot point.

The Manual

The full-color, 24-page illustrated manual provides detailed step-by-step instructions for building the 5 models included in the kit as well as troubleshooting tips and explanations to get your models working and moving smoothly. But the manual isn't just a set of assembly steps--it also includes a wealth of interesting and important scientific information. In the 'Check It Out' sections of the manual, kids can learn about the field of robotics and how this area of science is transforming our everyday lives.

    Good STEM activity for kids

    Good STEM activity for kids
The various models here were put together by our 6 and 7-almost-8 year old.The directions are easy-enough to follow if you notice the details they kindly point out (ie. some similar looking pieces are marked by a triangle and some by a circle, etc). You'll likely to run into some trial and ERROR, which is GREAT, honestly, to help learn linear troubleshooting and explain the concepts of why there is no suction power, etc. For that I love this activity. Enough for 2 kids to go at it on their own, yet enough difficulty for some parental guidance and coaching, ie. not too easy, but not too frustrating for young kids to give up on it, a good balance I must say.I didn't give 5 stars because the overall delivery of the educational literature was a bit off, half comic-book and half explanatory, etc. 4 stars however is still very very good.I DO WISH the overall execution/packaging was optimal, as there's lots of very small pieces and SOME pieces there's a resealable bag, yet other small pieces it is a one-time use plastic bag? In a perfect world, it would be a nice resealable bag or perhaps a closeable plastic box to keep all of these pieces together, since they aren't universal legos that can get scattered in a toybox. I included a pic of what I mean.Overall though, not perfect, but still a good STEM activity for my kids that they enjoyed putting together with some gaps for Daddy to fill in on why they did what they did and to help them learn to troubleshoot when things don't go as the directions say.

      From a 9-year-old:

I liked how the toy succeeded the first time I tried. I also liked how it was very sturdy, even when it falls it doesn't break. In my opinion, it works well and it can definitely walk on smooth surfaces. The suction cups stick so well that you sometimes need to use tools to lift it. I highly recommend this toy.

The suction is no where near enough to make it climb walls as described online. It will neither defy gravity nor climb walls. My son has fun building the robot, and it does have many fun designs to try, but he was very disappointed that the robot would not climb walls. It is simply too heavy for the motor included. He got bored with it after about 20 minutes.

I liked how well laid out the instruction manual was and how child friendly it was. It was super easy to assemble. However, we could not get it to climb walls or windows. We watched the trouble shooting video and checked and rechecked the tips. Still no climbing except a few steps. On our final attempt it fell of the window within a foot of the ground and broke a foot. Very disappointed.
