Editorial Reviews
For the original soundtrack of Bolden, in theaters this spring, nine-time GRAMMY Award winner Wynton Marsalis faced a nearly impossible task: bring fellow trumpeter and New Orleanian Buddy Bolden, widely considered one of the fathers of jazz, back from the dead. But on this album, Marsalis enthusiastically resurrects the bawdy, brassy sound of Bolden as no one else can, throwing a Big Easy party that romps through some of Bolden's most beloved material. Featuring acclaimed vocalists Catherine Russell and Brianna Thomas and an all-star cast of instrumentalists that includes Wycliffe Gordon, Victor Goines, Marcus Printup, and more, Marsalis brings turn-of-the-century New Orleans back to life, imbuing ragtime classics popularized by Bolden and his competitor Louis Armstrong with a modern sound and energy.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2019More so than the soundtracks to Herbie Hancock's Round Midnight and Robert Altman's Kansas City, hearing this album of music to the film Bolden instills not only the desire but the need to see the movie. Charles "Buddy" Bolden left no recordings, no scores of arrangements. His musical history owes to all the New Orleans musicians he mentored and inspired during his time, particularly Louis Armstrong. Wynton Marsalis and members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra recreate the style and atmosphere of the early days of jazz, sometimes writing and arranging his own tunes, sometimes playing songs of the era, even using Armstrong's arrangement to Stardust. Many tracks involve Bolden's quintet of cornet, played by Marsalis, valve trombone, Bb clarinet and C clarinet, bass, drums, and guitar (though banjo was also played then). A small quibble is the faulty imitation of Armstrong's vocals by Reno Wilson. The precision in performance characteristic of the LCJO is also evident. Early jazz is exciting and joyous; its recreation here is a wonderful homage. Lacking a time machine and wanting more than remastered mono-78 rpm platters, this album, and movie, will be appreciated by many. 26 tracks over 70 minutes is a lot of music.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2019Wynton Marsalis, in his brilliant soundtrack album for the movie, Bolden, has demonstrated how musical traditions, in this case the early jazz and pre jazz of New Orleans in the day of Buddy Bolden, can be simultaneously preserved and expanded upon; the two are not mutually exclusive in the hands of a masterful artist with deep understanding. Wynton's original composition, Timelessness, says it all in the title, and is a haunting, classic melody against alluring chord changes. The darkness in the movie's themes (violence, racism, mental illness), against the bright light of musical discovery, dancing, and celebration, are all reflected in first rate performances. Vocals by Catherine Russell on a standard from Buddy Bolden's day, "Make Me A Pallet On The Floor," and on the closing number, "Buddy's Horn," another poignant Marsalis original, are an added treat, and a nod towards authenticity. Highly recommended all around, and a must have for lovers of jazz, great music, and New Orleans.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2019Great sound and arrangements and some great new pieces by Wynton!
HOWEVER, poor idea getting an actor to sing for the king of a swinging lyric - Louis Armstrong. Reno Wilson is a passable impressionist but a lousy singer. His phrases are stiff and very often awkward.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2019I am an avid collector of early jazz & the revival jazz. Revival jazz recreates original arrangements. Vince Giordano’s Boardwalk Empire is a prime example. There are no recordings of Buddy Bolden , no charts. Only anecdotal comments are available. What we do know of Buddy is that he was charismatic, exciting, and a driving cornet player. Wynton Marsalis chooses to capture the effect & excitement of Buddy. His approach captures Buddy’s effect on his listeners. He is exciting, new ,with world class musicians. This is not your grandfather’s Dixieland. It is amazing, new, exciting , driving Jazz. The best description is “WOW”. I applaud his approach and his liberty of including songs Buddy never knew. The music is a tribute to Buddy and his effect on music. It’s exciting and new. If there is a God in heaven then this should get a Grammy.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2019I thought the album excellent. So little is known of Buddy Bolden other than the legacy of those who heard him when they were young- like a Louis Armstrong and Joe “King” Oliver, but the work that resulted in this music and the underlying film was first rate. The cauldron of New Orleans that resulted in this music and its evolution was frightful yet the music attests to the hard living and the few joys of the day.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2019This is fun stuff. Who knows if it hits the mark? It doesn't matter really. It is probably way too polite, but like some much of Marsailis' work, it is done with respect and taste. Very entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2019I love this CD. I bought it before seeing the movie and played it all the way home. Marsalis plays so beautifully and wrote some very nice tunes. I wish I had loved the movie as much as the music.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2019I bought the cd based on the fact that WM is playing and writing. I'm supposed to receive the cd tomorrow 2 day delivery. I sure hope it is as good as everyone says it is because I am currently watching "Bolden" the movie on Amazon Prime and it pretty much stinks. It primarily focusses on Boldens mental problems and has very little cornet bravado in it. I'm worried right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Merveilleux album

5.0 out of 5 stars Early jazz enthusiasts essential
As no recording of Buddy Bolden exists ( there are rumours of a cylinder however) this is as near to hearing Buddy as we will get.
All performed with the usual panache of Wynton Marsalis to make enjoyable listening.
Makes a suitable stablemate to the excellent Mr Jelly Lord CD by Wynton Marsalis exploring the following era/s.
