- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2023"Greta" is a riveting thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. While the movie centers around a character who exhibits stalking behavior, the narrative's intensity and the standout performances make it an unforgettable cinematic experience.
Isabelle Huppert's portrayal of Greta is nothing short of remarkable. Her ability to captivate and unsettle the audience simultaneously showcases her exceptional talent. The tension and suspense build steadily, creating an atmosphere that's both chilling and enthralling.
The film's direction and storytelling are masterfully executed, drawing viewers into a cat-and-mouse game that's unpredictable and engrossing. The cinematography and soundtrack contribute to the overall immersive experience.
While "Greta" delves into disturbing themes, it does so in a way that showcases the psychological complexities of the characters. It's a gripping exploration of obsession and the lengths to which people will go for connection.
For fans of intense thrillers that leave a lasting impact, "Greta" is a must-watch. The suspenseful plot, standout performances, and skillful direction earn this film a well-deserved five-star rating. It's a movie that stays with you long after the credits roll.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2019No one "does crazy' like Isabelle Huppert. This joins her psychotic performances in Chabrol's La Ceremonie (based on Ruth Rendell's best novel) , Michael (Funny Games) Haneke's The Piano Teacher and My Mother, based on the infamous (and banned) novel by Georges Baitlle.
Huppert still strikingly beautiful - and again, has an amazing talent for her portrayals of the extremely disturbed. Completely believable and frightening.
Chloe Moretz is also terrific in her role. Having viewed Susperia,Let the Right One In and now, Greta, I've forgotten those kiddo movies I used to take my kids to. Who knew?
Maika Monroe (Labor Day, It Follows) has a great turn as an idle, vapid, superficial rich kid. One reviewer mistook those traits as "her not being the brightest bulb," which, I guess he means if she wasn't especially bright, thus rendering a key scene implausible. Not so. Besides, she does attend Smith College! Nah, just a typical spoiled millennial. Besides, this very characteristic makes for a good - and necessary element to the plot/story, as well as a (sometimes amusing) contrast/foil to Moretz - who recently suffered a personal tragedy, waits tables and so forth.
Director Neil Jordan's best - granted, I've never been a big fan of his work - but between the story and performances...a great thriller.
There's about a dozen deleted scenes, totaling about ten minutes, on bluray. I don't know why they didn't make it into film, most would've added to the film.
Can't recommend enough. One of the best thrillers in years.
Also, this does a great job in it's portrayal of the " new " Manhattan. Very realistic.
Five Stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2019I watched this because I was intrigued by the trailer and also tend to enjoy Huppert and also Moretz, so the combination was irresistible. I give this three and and a half stars (which Amazon doesn't allow, so I'm rounding up because I enjoyed it.)
Plot summary: A young woman in NY who recently lost her mother is befriended by a charming, vulnerable older woman. Yet all is not teacakes and Liszt. Don't set your expectations too high - much of the story is predictable, but this is a psychological thriller for which you will need to suspend your disbelief in order for it to work.
SPOILERS Ahead
Many reviewers on IMdb panned this movie because it's not thriller-y enough or simply because the Frances character doesn't know how to block a number. (I don't either, for the record, but I get that a twenty-something person should probably know how that works.). There were a few plot holes like that, but it was a fun romp with mild chills. I wish the trailers hadn't shown Greta losing it in the restaurant Frances worked at because it could be a nasty surprise when Frances finally understands that Greta is dangerously unbalanced. I also would have liked to see more of the friendship between Erica and Frances and more background on Nicola's story. For anyone who complains about things like the Dad calling a private detective instead of the police, there's a deleted scene which addresses that. In fact, watch all the deleted scenes. Most of them connect the story better and deepen the motivation (why Frances would find the older woman's company palatable due to the loss of her mother and the ability of the father to move on.)
I really enjoyed "Greta" because it was just creepy enough for someone like me who doesn't generally like thrillers, but enjoys decent acting and some plot twists. Much of the plot was predictable, but in a comforting, Lifetime movie kind of way.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2023Great movie I love this main character I like to watch anything she is in. Without giving the plot away I was impressed, and it makes you think about your own life and how this could easily happen to good people.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2019This could have easily been a B Movie but under the guidance of a proper director and starring a great cast, this thriller/horror film was riveting and original enough to keep interest high. I first saw Isabelle Huppert in Madame Bovary in the early 90's, and she absolutely does not disappoint. Wow. What's great is to go back and rewatch for clues. More than anything, it's just fun. This movie might seem like a bubblegum film, but it's far more than that--you'll see just how far bubble gum can go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greta es Genisl
El mejor servicio. Llego mucho antes de lo esperado y en perfectas condiciones. Me gusta el diseño de la caja ya que es diferente al del Blu-ray. Y la película es buenísima con actuaciones bien logradas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super divertissant !

5.0 out of 5 stars
