Editorial Reviews
Countless fans worldwide fell head over heels for Ben Platt during his Tony, Grammy and Emmy award winning turn in the title role of Dear Evan Hansen and on-screen in films such as the Pitch Perfect franchise. As the vocalist, actor, and performer sang life into a host of nuanced and fascinating characters, audiences embraced his voice wholeheartedly. By dusting off the piano, picking up a pen, and singing his own truth straight from the heart, he shared another side of himself as a solo artist in early 2019. For the first time, he redirected the empathy that endeared him to millions-on himself.
Signed to Atlantic Records by Chairman and C.E.O. Craig Kallman and President of A&R Pete Ganbarg, he explored his formative influences, ranging from timeless singer-songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Carole King to legendary crooners like Donny Hathaway, Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder. As a result, the music delivers confessional lyricism by way of soulful intimacy as part of one cohesive narrative on his 2019 full-length debut, Sing To Me Instead [Atlantic Records]. The 12-track album chronicles the highs and lows of a transformative relationship.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2019All Ben Platt fans know that this guy has an amazing voice, range and sings with unbridled passion. I am a huge fan and was so excited for this his first solo album SING TO ME INSTEAD. I was especially excited for he has done many interviews expressing how this was the first time he was truly able to show himself openly for all he is just baring his soul. He wrote/cowrote all the songs which all have strong meaning and tell of love, passion and life. From the first note of the first song BAD HABIT the listener is pulled in to the amazing voice, the emotion and the story being told. Every track is a winner and you can see what a passion project this is for Ben. Standouts for me begin with EASE MY MIND a beautiful song written to a love. It brings me to tears every time. GROW AS WE GO is another wonder where he tells a love he doesn't have to leave to grow but can stay and still have the freedom. So beautiful. HURT ME ONCE speaks for itself and here Ben's voice soars through all the octaves and ranges he is capable of with emotion indented into each note and word. OLDER is a reflective song on life and the album closes with RUN AWAY a tribute to his parents and the love they share and have imparted on him. HONEST MAN and TEMPORARY LOVE are also true inspirations. I have always loved Ben Platt and now I feel I have had the honor to get to know him even better. For an artist to wear their truth and life so honestly on their sleeve as he does here is rare. And he uses his vocal gift to perfection. He can belt for sure but there are slow songs, ballads, songs of every type here. The songs go where they need as his voice explores with his feelings. I am mesmerized from beginning to end here. I highly recommend this cd to all Ben Platt fans but also to all fans of quality music and pure artistry. Ben Platt is only 25 and has a rare gift in his vocal ability and more importantly he knows how to use it. This cd is indeed a songwriter/storyteller experience and done to the highest level. I could go on and on but again can't recommend enough that you give yourself the gift of the emotional musical journey this cd provides.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2019Ben Platt has made a very spectacular splash on Broadway and in the entertaining arts and has generated more than a fair amount of hype to go with his fame. This release is a stunning and vivid testimony that the hype and fame is absolutely justified.
This is starkly emotional music and clearly a very personal accounting of relationships and how humans process the best and worst points in them as they evolve. Some of the songs are slower paced and packed with pathos that is clearly youthful but no less genuine for all it's innocence. Mid tempo tunes often have some serious punches to the emotional gut and more than a little truth that we all can relate to. Uptown be-bopping happens as well and anyone that's ever fallen in love will surely find these relatable.
On the topic of head-on infatuation and the abandonment of reason is one of the best tunes I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. You won't be able to help yourself from singing along while getting progressively more ebullient. "Share Your Address" is the song I wish was in top 40 radio when I first fell in love. It's pure fun and catchier than it has any right to be. No matter when you fell in love, this song will take you back to that time and make you smile.
The music itself is surprising and more complex than a typical pop-ballad release might be expected to show. There are some lush melodies here and several with a strong gospel flavor that call to mind some classic anthems or possible movie themes that get in your head and just won't leave. Ben Platt has a pleasant voice in the main and often showcases some fine timber and sweet vibrato. There are honestly some moments where he's a bit strident but not to the detriment of his story in those songs. He sings lyrically and with great passion and if he continues along this path he's sure to be a talent for his generation.
Ben Platt is sure to evoke the styling of many a great chanteuse and diva with his no holds barred delivery. Clearly he's a chanter to be reckoned with and holds great promise for the future of men in the arts.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2023My son and his wife have been talking about Ben Platt for years. They flew to New York to see him live. I finally watched his Netflix special (which they had attended, and were moved from nose bleed seats to the 4th row) - live at Radio City Music Hall - and was hooked by the first song, Bad Habit. I then bought Dear Evan Hanson on Amazon so I could watch it - and of course his performance broke my heart. Ben can sing absolutely anything, any style - and on top of that, he's a great actor and a great songwriter. I would love to buy the DVD or Blu Ray of the special but can't find it. Every song on this CD is great...the one I like the least is Ease My Mind; the one I love the best is Bad Habit. But I find myself singing Share Your Address all the time...
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2020If you like Ben Platt, then this album is a must! He has a knack for writing to what works for his style of singing that is refreshing and endearing. A lot of broadway singers make albums, but they somehow lack the ability to transcend that spectrum of musical theater music in a way that feels authentic or they go toward a pop sound which doesn't mesh well with the trained belts they are accustomed to. Ben knows what his strengths are vocally and he writes to them, emoting the same emotion with his personal collection that he did in powerful shows like "Dear Evan Hanson." He also sounds like he just genuinely enjoys what he is doing. I prefer the deluxe edition because it includes live recordings of songs from his Radio City Music Hall showcase, like The Joke originally written by Brandi Carlyles, which has become my new favorite! Instrumentally, some of the songs sound like they might have been recorded on a keyboard in his basement, but the songs themselves and his voice work around these few moments, so that shouldn't be a dealbreaker. All in all, my new favorite album as a whole!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Vinyl
Ben Platt is an amazing artist. The vinyl is easily one of my crispest sounding vinyls I own, the most clear sound. The packaging is beautiful and pleasing to the eye. The sleeve is a beautiful colour with the lyrics as well as writing and production credits. Can't wait for new music Ben.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ben Platt: mehr!!
Aber wer will schon so lang warten?
