- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2019FRESH AIR, FREE MUSIC AND OTHER TIMES.
Jery Garcia in a propitious environment, outdoors, specifically Frech's Camp on the Eeel River, typical camp surrounded by nature, hippie atmosphere and much relaxation, or what is the same an ideal place to listen to Jerry Garcia Band, the musicians in all the recordings, Gloria Jones accompanying with his voice, John Kahn on bass, David Kemper on drums, Jacklin LaBranch on vocals and Melvin Seals on keyboards. Splendid sound and 6 CDs that are a real pleasure. Unpublished recordings and about 5 hours of recording where never edited songs are included and as always special treatment of known buds. Tested by Bill Grahan, the material includes three complete concerts of August 1987, 1989 and 1991. As in the many concerts that have already been edited by Jerry Garcia alone with his band, the best thing is his freshness, the satisfaction of playing for playing, in this case of the concerts held in different years in the aforementioned summer camp, you feel the atmosphere of the young nudists, the innocence of a dedicated public, the nature that surrounds them, the clowns and the children. I understand that the new generations do not understand this type of environment, but it existed and it was great for making music and not for tracing performances, it was an almost non-professional environment, it was pure enjoyment, innocence in its purest form. Today impossible to repeat. Good times that will not come back !!!!!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2021Jerry was at a good place when he played this gig. All the members of the band sound top-notch. His guitar playing is so mesmerizing. his voice is clean and sparrowing. I get such a nice feeling when I listen to this set that I often play it with my headphones and sit outside on sunny days and watch the natural world around me. I have to say I love this guy and the Grateful dead and I was at home with them when I lived in the Bay area some years ago. Listen to him play Forever Young and tell me that it won't cause a stir inside of you. Thanks, Jerry for all the memories and all the beautiful music
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 20208.29.87 had long been a sacred bootleg that i held onto, cloning in triplicate to protect to make sure i always had a copy around. So happy to see it is an official release now. I hadn't listened to it for a few years but ahh man, it's better than i remembered. It is.... perfect. Just perfect. This is Jerry in absolute tip top form, unbelievable, that deal? WOW! Sisters and brothers, evangeline, think, tangled up in BLUE!!!! I could rave for ever. This is it, this is the one if i could only have one. Not even a second thought.
And the other shows are pretty great too, and seeing some photos of the camp is an extra bonus. I would love love love to see a video of these shows.

"I saw JGB about 25 times and well over 100 Dead shows but the Eel River ranks up near the top."
"This was Jerry in the redwoods along the majestic Eel River."
Wow. Three shows from the Jerry Garcia Band (JGB) from different years--Aug. 29, 1987/June 10, 1989/Aug. 10, 1991. Hearing these shows I can only wonder just how good it must have been to be there in person over that five year period next to the Eel. Don't let the overall four "star" rating influence you unduly. There's a number of performances across these shows that float upwards toward five "stars", with the same kind of feel that the '90 JGB in Hilo, Hawaii set has.
Recorded at French's Camp by the Eel River originally as a benefit for Wavy Gravy/the Hog Farm, the band performed both acoustic and electric shows. This set focuses on the electric part of the shows--but there is a limited bonus disc of the '87 acoustic show. The band is Garcia, Melvin Seals-keyboards, David Kemper-drums, John Kahn-bass, plus Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch-vocals.
PIercy, Ca. is north of S.F. and, surrounded by the idyllic isolation/tall trees/back to nature vibe of the area, the band seemed to respond with some great music. Two discs make up each show. Some songs will be very familiar to JGB fans, but as usual the versions from these gigs are worth hearing and another piece of the JGB musical puzzle. There was a freshness to the band's sound, and some of that Garcia excitement with a 'where is this music taking us/slightly tinged acid sparkle' in his solos. The "old" Garcia sound was there but with a maturity that added more depth to his solos and vocals.
Songs like "And It Stoned Me", "Deal", "Evangeline", "Tangled Up In Blue", "Mission In The Rain", and others the band liked to play are all good examples of how good this band was. Plus there's "See What Love Can Do", plus The Band's "Twilight", both good additions to the band's discography. And with songs like "Lazy Bones", "I Hope It Won't Be This Way Always", "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", "Struggling Man", "Lay Down Sally", and "You Never Can Tell", this set of shows is definitely worthwhile for JGB fans.
This is worth adding to your shelf of JGB albums. The sound (recorded by John Cutler) is very good--clean and open sounding, but the music is from the original soundboard source, so it's not perfect. The packaging is a slightly flimsy cardboard slipcase with each disc in a cardboard jacket, with a graphic in different colors that's different from the cover graphic. The booklet too is a nice addition to this package with an essay on the shows and reminiscences from people at the shows, plus period photos. And for the relatively low price for six CDs, what else do you want? Maybe a box set of those acoustic sets.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2019A very well worthy live recording of Jerry Garcia and his band the Jerry Garcia Band during the late '80's into the early 90's. This six disc live masterpiece captures the magic Jerry Garcia in his prime with his band. Recorded near the Eel River in Piercy, CA & clocking in at around 347 mins of music is a real treat to sit back, relax, and enjoy this beautiful recording. This is well worth the price and I have listened to all the discs almost nonstop since purchasing. Add this to your Jerry Garcia/ Grateful Dead collection and its new for 2019.enjoy

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2019Legion of Mary and Garcia Band in the 70s is all good stuff but the late 80s and early 90s stuff hits my sweet spot. Maybe its because I was born in the mid 70s so really found the dead and Garcia band in the 80s but it’s all great. Have a lot of dead and Garcia band but these shows keep getting regular play.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 20196 great disks of JGB music. Kind of a warm up for the main tour with friends sound. All 3 shows are excellent and Jerry's voice is strong throughout. Disappointed that Amazon did not include the bonus acoustic disk from '87 as advertised. I ordered this weeks before it was published.

4.0 out of 5 stars I can never get enough of Jerry Garcia!
3 complete concerts for a great price! Although there is always repetition with having multiple JGB shows they are always played differently and there are also always hidden gems. Great sound. The only reason for losing a star is the individual cardboard sleeves for discs but this would be part of the lower price. The discs fit so loosely in them that the discs can fly out on their own at the slightest movement. Have already moved to proper cases so all is good. "How Sweet it Is"

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
The only thing preventing this from 5 stars is quality of cardboard box that houses the discs and booklet. Too flimsy.
