When your best music is in your rear-view mirror
Not gonna lie; This Album is not good. This Album is a statement of decline by a Band that has distanced itself from it's trademarked pedigree of Heavy Metal Music. 5 years from now, this Album will be forgettable.

This is my first In Flames album and it is a masterpiece on so many levels. Hands down my favorite album. Slightly ahead of In this Moment's Blood album. It starts heavy and slows down towards the end but there is a reason for it. This album elevated from being one of my favorite albums to being in a class of its own once I looked at artwork and paid more attention to the lyrics. It hit me on an emotional level once the all pieces fell in to place like the final scene on The Sixth Sense. All the angry screaming and gut wrenching softer lyrics came in to focus. Each lyric after this revelation had more meaning and more of an emotional impact.

Now this could all be just in my head but here goes :) The art in the lyrics booklet depicts The Mask character going on a journey in a barren wasteland. Each picture is fantastical landscape with The Mask and has some relevance to the song. Most of pictures have similar themes like puzzle pieces. Except for the last picture. The picture for Stay with Me.

This is a picture of a child in a dilapidated room sitting on the floor and staring forlornly. On the floor are some pieces of a puzzle and... a stuffed toy of The Mask. Something in my brain triggered a comment I read about Tremonti's A Dying Machine that the lyrics are a conversation between two people differentiated by the tone of the singer.

That's when it hit me like a freight train after listening to this album on repeat for weeks. This album is about (in my mind) the journey of a timid and childish personality coming to the surface inside a tormented mind. The soft lyrics are the child's persona and the angry lyrics are angry tormented part of his persona which is symbolized by The Mask character. The Mask is a persona/character the child created from his toy to cope.

It starts heavy with the angry Mask persona in charge and finishes soft with the child persona ascending after an epic journey together. You see the transition from angry to calm and the tug of war along the way. Every lyric started having new meaning, the track layout started making more sense, the tones of each lyric started having more weight. I felt like I was listening to the album for the first time because my imagination now has a narrative to play in my mind as each song plays. The lyrics and emotional tone of Stay with me is the ultimate finale as calm persona ascends and begs and pleas for The Mask that helped him through the journey to stay and not leave.

I have never felt more emotionally connected to an album like this. The music being so amazing is just icing on the cake.

I heard "I Am Above" on the radio, and I figured I would check out the whole release. I do not have a history with In Flames, so I had no preconceived notions of what to expect, or who they were, or any of that other nonsense that you see in reviews. I look at it this way, I have a bunch of bands that I am huge fan of, but not all of their stuff is the same, or even good, for that matter. I take the songs I like, dismiss the songs I don't, and go from there.

I will spare you my take on every song, because, quite frankly, I know that no one really cares. 13 songs, some have a very listenable growl into a clean chorus, some of them are pretty straight forward rock songs. All in, I think it is a very worthy add to my collection. I have Voices, Call My Name, and I Am Above on my workout play list, and I think this is an above average release.

Nine months of listening to this release, and I like it more and more each time, so I bumped it up from 4 to 5 Stars. This is very listenable from top to bottom and a great Heavy Metal release. It might be different than the rest of the In Flames catalog (I don't know, I can't but every CD from every band - well, I can, and try, I just haven't gotten around to expanding my In Flames catalog, yet), but this album is pretty killer.

    I really like the Album
"Voices" might be my favorite song ever
"I am above" running a close second
"Stay with me" I really enjoy
I've listened exclusively to this album for two weeks now
Voices and I above got me instantly
Some of the other tracks took a few times
Not saying they are bad at first
    They just don't hook you
First 4 tracks hit like a hammer then it calms way down.
There is one song I skip
I'll leave you to figure it out you might like it.

I know allot of people dogged this album said they went soft
In flames has always been a mixture of heavy and soft
First album was half acoustic melodies

I skip past one track on this album
This is there 13th full length album I believe
I think they still got it
In my opinion they are the greatest metal band ever.
    13 albums strong
I can still rock them all
Most bands have one good album
Then the rest of the albums have one or two good tracks.

This album has 1 song I don't care for
3 songs that hit my favorites list
This band has 1 album I don't care for
Yeah I don't listen to the older stuff anymore
That's just because recording quality for metal vocals pre 2000's was terrible

Point is great album from a band on the longest run of great albums.

"I, The Mask" is a pleasant return to form considering their last two studio albums, "Siren Charms" and "Battles." Now, I must admit that I am fan of "Battles" and tried to get into "Siren Charms"; however, after multiple listens, I could not make the connection with "Siren Charms."
I really like this album! Songs such as "Voices", "I Am Above", and "Stay With Me" are standout tracks. The rest of the album does require multiple listens, but once this occurs, you will be surprised of the strength of this album both musically and lyrically. It's a small step towards old In Flames, but still fresh to allow In Flames to continue with a new sense of style. I would say "I, The Mask" is a mix of "Come Clarity", "A Sense of Purpose", and my favorite new-era In Flames, "Sounds of a Playground Fading."
If you are wanting to get into In Flames, I would suggest their older material; however, "I, The Mask" is an excellent album that I would say is just shy of greatness.

What an absolute banger! Huge sound and well engineered. Since Battles this band have transformed to powerhouse status. The only legacy band to genuinely get better with age and continue to push their musical boundaries.
