Editorial Reviews
`Hello Happiness' is an album which sets Chaka Khan's timeless vocal to an empowering collection of songs with cutting-edge production. With an eye on the future and a respect for the past, Chaka Khan has delivered an album with the contemporary edge to entice newcomers to her world class talent and the quality to excite long-term fans. A tribute to the life-affirming power of music, it combines the sass of `I'm Every Woman' with the invention of `I Feel For You'.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2019I personally like the idea of the new Chaka Khan music. It's up to date, not so much so that it's loss a of funky old school grooves. Chaka Khan appears to try and make a staple with her new music as she did with Prince's I feel for you. I feel for you doesn't appear like much of a staple today but in its time it was the real first record to mesh r&b with hip hop/rap. It is production heavy. Although, some songs here sound undone or oversimplified filled up with embellished synthesizers. For me sometimes it works sometimes not. Like "Like Sugar" and "Too Hot" has some old Chaka fit inside to give you the idea she's evolving, keeping her experiment mentality without losing her true self in the process. It's also felt with "Isn't that enough". Hello Happiness brings the closest to the old funk with an updated sound for today's youth. For many old heads this will not resonate but this old head loves to find new sounds mixed with the old. If you listen close enough you can feel it. Chaka's voice has changed immensely but she's using it in a way that fits with this new sound. Production thrusts her voice too far in front on some the songs, like she'd need that. As time goes on I think this album will be one of her albums that kept her relevant in the eyes of the youth yet not so dismissive for us old heads who are looking for our favorite artists to up the anti without completely losing us or themselves with the new age sound. IMO it's a great mixture of the two. My only dislike is that it would have been nice to showcase Chaka sanging, like only she can. She and Prince sometimes produced the hell out of "Come to my house" but she still SANG on it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2019You want to dance? You want to be inspired to strut your stuff around the house, yard, sidewalk, dance club? Want to hear what a seasoned veteran funkstar does with her sound given all the talented people to pick from in the industry to support her art? Sometimes the stars all line up just right and it doesn't matter how many songs are on the project - when they hit it, they hit it - SHE HIT IT!!!! I have been following Ms. Kahn since Rufus and I have to say, this effort is clearly the culmination of a career, training, hits, misses, and lessons learned - the cool thing about getting older and bringing all that to the table. The beats are great - wonderful, tight, and unique rythmn w/ African influences, vocal flourishes that take you right back to her first recordings. An unmistakable, not to be duplicated stamp she puts on her music. These seven songs are all really well done - they feel current, but unique, classy and rich. There is also a constraint in the vocal that I haven't heard before ---- well done, well done, well done. You keep creating, I'll keep buying. Love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2019I will admit I was a little nervous purchasing this album because of an unfavorable review. In that review we were told that the title song (in the video version) was of Chaka singing in a telephone booth, and sounded like it. And that the rest of the album was worse! Well I couldn't disagree more. This album is pure FUNK. Chaka has always been a master of sound, and this is nothing short of brilliant. The only drawback to me was the album is too short.
Years ago, when he was still alive, Miles Davis compared her voice to his trumpet! Now that's a compliment. One that she can be proud of for the rest of her life.
Carry on, Chaka, keep singing and I'll keep listening. And to the reviewer, either have your hearing checked by a doctor or get new speakers. Or both. 'Cause if you can't hear her, then somethin' ain't right. And it sure ain't Miss Chaka! Peace!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2019I'm not sure what other reviewers are complaining about on Chaka's new release HELLO HAPPINESS? Some say this isn't classic Chaka, which could be true, but it's more of an evolution in sound.
Chaka's trumpet-like voice is still magnificent and she doesn't hold back.
The songs are dance-able and upbeat and I NEVER once felt that the production side took over or overshadowed the vocals like on some vocalists (who have extreme vocal talent but the production side ruins their sound -- Cheryl Lynn comes to mind when she colloborated with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis -- Janet Jackson's Control producers -- which worked well for Jackson and not so much for Lynn).
Sure this isn't Rufus days Chaka and it isn't like albums "Chaka" or "What Cha Gonna Do For Me," but I liken it to more of "I Feel For You," which introduced Chaka to teens like me in the 80s. That album had an updated musical sound but Khan's vocals were always the real presence and made the album and the title single a hit.
The only drawback is that HELLO HAPPINESS is way too short clocking in at 28-minutes. And one of the songs is sort of a reprise: "Like a Lady" and "Lady Like" are 2 separate tracks but sound very similar.
