From the manufacturer

Founded in the late 1990’s in Detroit, Michigan, Mack Avenue Records’ beginnings were conceived out of a genuine love for jazz and the artists that create it. Gretchen Valade, the label’s founder, sat at the grand piano in her living room composing Nat King Cole and Peggy Lee–inspired vocal charts and wanted to find a way to get them recorded. In that moment Mack Avenue was born. The label’s first few recordings spotlighted both young talent and storied jazz veterans, a mix which contributed to our artistic philosophy in the years that followed.

With new recordings by George Shearing, Gerald Wilson, OscarCastro-Neves, Terry Gibbs and a handful of newcomers, passion guided our early agenda and shortly a business infrastructure emerged to match it. Creatively we were driven by the idea that we could be a partner to highly-acclaimed established artists looking to further their careers and, at the same time, nurture the next generation of jazz’s undiscovered greats. Soon, Mack Avenue’s releases were being noticed globally for their attention to artistic merit as well as sonic and visual quality.

As our creative endeavors and passionate commitment lead us into a variety of genres, our primary mission of recording and presenting music that inspires remains intact.

Editorial Reviews

Hailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation, Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique, free association and a spirit of infinite possibility. Though only 31, the New York-based musician boasts a long, prolific résumé as sideman (alongside such icons as Gary Burton and John Zorn), duo partner (with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch), and as soloist and bandleader. Love Hurts - which marks Lage's third Mack Avenue LP recorded with a trio, and his first to feature bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King (The Bad Plus) - sees the Grammy nominated guitarist exploring the American song catalog from a truly unique vantage point, performing music written by a range of audacious and original artists, from Roy Orbison to Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Giuffre to Peter Ivers. Lage and his rhythm section build upon the wandering sonic outlook of his previous LPs, further impelling his defining amalgam of jazz fusion, jam band liberation, standards, and embryonic rock 'n' roll with virtuosic precision, adventurous improvisation, and a remarkably clear vision.

    Good music.

This third Lage trio outing, LOVE HURTS, is a program of shifting and nuanced moods. On my initial listening, I found the album to be more somber overall in ambiance than its predecessors, perhaps because its opener, "In Heaven," has a minor-keyed noir atmosphere which seems to linger, but on subsequent plays, I had a somewhat different impression, becoming more aware of lighter, happier moments, provided by "Tomorrow Is The Question," "The Windup" and "Encore (A)". Perhaps I would describe LOVE HURTS as being the most understated in the trio series, which is in no way intended as a criticism. Notably, Julian is joined here by, for the first time, bassist Jorge Roeder (familiar, however, to Lage followers) and drummer Dave King -- replacing, respectively, Scott Colley and Kenny Wollesen. The new rhythm section cooks no less deliciously -- only making use of different ingredients.

Just to offer the things that stand out most to me about the album:

Julian's playing, which I believe his many admirers have always appreciated for being, among other things, virtuosic but never gratuitously so, seems here to have become still more distilled; there is literally never a throwaway note -- they all have meaning and purpose.

The set list, once again, illustrates Julian's resistance to being categorized stylistically and entirely democratic manner of choosing material. A country-tinged Boudleaux Bryant number amidst Ornette Coleman or Keith Jarrett quicksilver jazz? -- why not? An idiosyncratic Jimmy Giuiffre concoction alongside a tune popularized by Roy Orbison ... with trombonist Tommy Dorsey's theme song thrown in, too? -- by all means! Julian continues not to give us what we want but, rather, to make us like what he gives us.

As a guitar player and one with a special fondness for the Gretsch brand, I couldn't have been happier to learn shortly before the album's release that Julian had discovered Gretsch and employed a Duo Jet in the studio. The DeArmond Dynasonic pickups manage, here and there, to overlap some of the more familiar Telecaster's twang, but additionally provide more muscle and, I think (though I may be biased) a more complex sound, which suits the album's material.

Finally, my favorites from the album are, at least now, "In Heaven"; "Encore (A)"; "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and the both stately and searing title cut. Julian's two compositions, "In Circles" and "Lullaby," too, are beautiful, although I find them more abstract than most of his writing on MODERN LORE.

Following Julian's extraordinary career for years now, I've learned not to anticipate a heralded new release with preconceptions, or any expectation -- other than to be mindblown. I have yet to be disappointed.

    GLASS SOUND
Third album with Mac Avenue and third great album by Julian Lage. His guitar sounds clean and crystal clear. In trio with David King on drums and member of Bad Plus and Jorge Roeder on bass. Perfect sound and versions that stop being in the hands of Lage. 10 songs immaculate and full of the best jazz music. Ornette Coleman's Themes, two by Keith Jarret, Bodelaux Bryant, James Guiffre, George Bausman, Roy Orbison and the rest of Lage himself. Rhythmic and beautiful. Without a doubt Lage is the guitarist of the moment. Great album, listen to it and resolve it for yourself.

Julian sounds awful on this cd, I suspect a flawed pressing. Online on my computer a download is much better
