A stunning homage to Sirk melodramas

A stunning homage to Sirk melodramas
Todd Haynes has revived the Technicolor 50's melodramas of Douglas Sirk with modern themes. The color cinematography is stunning, the music is perfect, and the performances are superb. If you get the chance, see this movie on film in a theatre -- it will take you back to the good old days of Hollywood studio filmmaking at its finest. A perfect companion piece to Carol, All That Heaven Allows, or There's Always Tomorrow. Also, despite some postings here, the Blu-Ray Special Edition has optional English subtitles.

Cool film which recreates late 40’s early 50’s life in a small American town. Confronts racism and gay issues and how our society dealt with it back then. It’s not a happy film, but mimics the beautiful Douglas Sirk films from the 50’s.

All the lush colors of the fall and the melodrama that are trademarks of Douglas Sirk. Not just the colors of fall but the seeeping use of color just makes you want to pull out All That Heaven Allows and Magnificent Obsession

This is a very special and important movie, with empathetic and intelligent performances from the three principle actors, and an outstanding supporting cast. It features a literate script, excellent direction, and is photographed beautifully, in the visual style of a 50s period piece. It examines two sensitive topics (race relations and human sexuality) with a deep sensitivity and awareness more associated with modern sensibilities, that were impossible to explore in movies made during its period setting.

This film has become an all time favorite of mine. With this film and "Carol", Todd Haynes has created 2 classics which cut through the mythology of the utopian 1950s. "Far from Heaven" is Todd Haynes' tribute to the classic films of Douglas Sirk...well, actually more than a tribute. It is virtually a semi-remake of Sirk's "All that Heaven Allows" with Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman, with Haynes substituting homophobia and racism for Sirk's references to ageism and classism. Dennis Quaid is too gay while Julianne Moore's attraction to Dennis Haysbert is too racially taboo. Rock Hudson is too poor and Jane Wyman is too old.

Far from Heaven's cinematography is picture perfect. In fact everything about this film is perfect in depicting 1950s upper middle class America. The dialogue is right out of the 50s film lexicon. This is the ultimate homage to the films made in that era.

My trilogy of films addressing the 1950s include Far from Heaven, Carol and Revolutionary Road. In their own ways they all reveal the dysfunctional underbellies of the 1950s.

"Things aren't as good as they used to be. In fact, they never were."

This is absolutely worth the purchase. A wonderful movie and excellent cast. The DVD is good quality, but no extras or subtitles.

The picture and sound on the Blu-Ray of Far From Heaven are just stunning. It took too long for this to come out, but it's a top notch release.
