Editorial Reviews
The great saxophonist Joe Lovano makes his leader debut here, introducing a wonderful new group and music of flowing lyricism, delicate texture, and inspired interplay. Lovano and pianist Marilyn Crispell are in accord at an advanced level inside its structures. Lovano: "We play together like an orchestra, creating an amazing tapestry. I brought in the material, but there's an equal weight of contribution, creating music within the music, and harmonizing it in a really special way."

- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019“Trio Tapestry” opens with “One Time In,” where Joe Lovano’s gongs resonates like a haunting sound in our dream. His sound is soft and mellow. His phrase is concise and mediative. Following trio performance, “Seeds Of Change,” filled with a nocturnal sensation, navigating the flow of trio’s emotion. On “Razzle Dazzle,” Marilyn Crispell’s melody proposes arcane lyricism, the trio proceed, groping for, intertwining with each other. “Sparkle Lights” starts with succeeding this atmosphere. This quietude, raptly inner focusing manner, is a forte to ECM. A distant thunder like Carmen Castaldi’s bass drum opens “Mystic.” Lovano’s tenor accepts the wonder of nature as they are. Gradually he can’t resist his inner joy of enjoying this wonder, his tone becomes buoyantly and swings naturally. His introspective approach heard here is fresh to me. I have been fascinated by his powerful masculine voice shown in BlueNote works like “Live At The Village Vanguard” and a performance with Saxophone Summit. But here, his sound perfectly matches with a distinctive label color. Crispell recognizes Lovano’s identifiable sound and aesthetic, while admitting his being an intelligent, fiery musician with a lot of passion in his playing. 11 tracks are said to be culled from total 17 performances, chosen by artists with Manfred Eicher as a fourth listener. Lovano admits six other pieces touched other energy, different attitude. (DownBeat, Mar., ’19) Crispell stares her inner landscape on “Piano/Drum Episode,” while Lovano tracing her footsteps on “Gong Episode.” Thinking all tunes composed by Lovano, two performances might be made out of sequence. In the liner notes, Lovano explicitly states his formative years in Cleveland is reflected in his inspiration here. Lovano has been close to Castaldi as Cleveland teenagers since the late ’60s. Lovano and Crispell have been close to drummer Paul Motian. Castaldi recalls Cleveland days, “There’s no real forwards or backwards with Lovano. It’s just speaking in his voice with integrity and growing in that voice.” Lovano continues, “We were reaching for something more spiritual, a way to be expressive.” (DownBeat, Mar., ’19) On the last four tunes, the trio play as if they are debating about their artistic opinion. “Trio Tapestry” is unmistakably an impeccable addition to Lovano’s versatile works.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2019THE DEEPEST AND INTIMATE SIDE OF LOVANO
Joe Lovano has played all or almost all the musical spaces, perhaps he lacked the deepest side of his music and now he has achieved it. Many years linked to Blue Note and having participated in some discs of ECM now he does for the first time as a leader for this company. he does it with nothing more and nothing less with Marilyn Ctispell, one of the most singular pianists of the moment and with Carmen Castaldi on drums, the result can not be other than the one that is, magnificent.
It is an album where the most intimate is reborn, to the ECM mode, melodically, harmonically and created atmospheres. It is a record that I would dare say is profoundly spiritual. Album to listen to in the deepest solitude, where everything is less the sound. A luxury for those who know how to appreciate music as something purely personal. Each note makes sense and excites us deeply. It is not a disc to share but to immerse in it, attentive to home sound that occurs. It is truly a tapestry of sensations.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2019This recording is frigid. Lovano's tenor sax tone is perfect but not his intonation, which is immediately apparent on the unisons, which even the copious reverb cannot mask. This music is more contemporary chamber music than jazz. If there is improvisation, there is no way to tell where, since there's never any heat or swing or rhythmic propulsion in the feel.
This music is the opposite of Charlie Parker, Eric Dolphy or John Coltrane. Dramamine recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars EL LADO MAS ESPIRITUAL DE JOE LOVANO
