A debut album doesn’t necessarily mean “new to the music scene.” Take Yola, for example, a seasoned vocalist from Bristol, England, who has for far too long paid her dues as a background singer for a plethora of major artists. Having signed to Dan Auerbach (most notably of the Black Keys)’s Easy Eye Sound label, Yola steps up to center stage with Walk through Fire, as impressive as an artist’s first album gets. Steeped in country ballads that you’d swear are 60 years old, the album is a tour de force, showcasing Yola’s powerful voice and precision to hit every note just right.

Yola vacillates between raw emotion (“It Ain’t Easier,” “Walk through Fire,” “Faraway Look”) and care-free (“Ride out in the Country,” “Love All Night (Work All Day)”), hitting the mark each time. With Auerbach giving a major assist and arguably the finest production of his career, Walk through Fire is filled to the brim with top-notch tunes ideal for porch-swinging or long drives.

Auerbach wisely limits his studio wizardry to the backing tracks, leaving Yola’s flawless vocals mostly untouched, front and center. Yola, with Auerbach’s smart sense, has gifted the world an album that is as vintage as it is modern -- timeless for sure. The album is a stunning debut, only bested by a live performance, where Yola affirms her range and chops are the real deal.

IF YOU ONLY TRY ONE SONG: “Lonely the Night”

I always seem to be a day late and a dollar short on "discovering" new talent. Well the musical gods have led me to Yola, a singer/songwriter that does not fit any one genre. In fact she refers to herself as "genre fluid".
If you like Americana, roots, real country, r&b, soul, Brit pop, Mersey beat, rock, she's for you. This is her second album, just released and I bought her first a couple of weeks ago. I cannot recommend her highly enough.
She's been around for years and her talent and hard work have paid off.
Do something for you as we continue our dark times. Yola won't disappoint.

I was completely blown away the first time I ever heard this magnificent album, and every time I've listened to it since! Her voice is simply divine. Her soulful brilliance can make me smile, cry and give me butterflies in my stomach- All in the same song! The musicians are top notch and serve as the absolutely perfect stage for her beautiful words and stellar voice to dance upon. Her vibes are infectious and this is literally one of the absolute best new albums I've heard in years! Truly Amazing!

I play this cd so much and stream it on AmazonMusic all the time. Yola is an amazing performer and the backing band is made up of Nashville all-stars. On my first listen of Walk Through Fire, I particularly noticed the harmonica - looked at the musicians and it was Charlie McCoy! And Vince Gill as a back up singer on Keep Me Here? Wow! Each song is a gem. The lyrics are intelligent, melodies and harmonies are incredible. She's up for a Grammy as best new artist, best Americana Album, Best American Roots Performance, Best American Roots Song. Dan Auerbach is the producer and deserves for such an amazing debut album - both for his label Easy Eye Sound and for Yola.

Based on other reviews I bought the vinyl version. Yola's performance is great and she has a wonderful voice. The quality of the disk is very good - It is heavy vinyl and the surface is quiet and free of defects. However, the sound quality is not great compared to the digital version. Unfortunately, this has been my experience with many modern recordings - the digital (i.e., CD) version often sounds better. This is in contrast to older recordings (from the 60's and 70's) where the LP version typically sounds better than the (later) CD version. There are a number of reasons for this which are not relevant to this review.

Yola has a powerful voice with a lot of dynamic range. Unfortunately, the engineer who created the master for the vinyl version used excessive compression. Other reviewers have described this as a wavering sound. This compression is not evident on the digital version. Basically, as Yola's voice, and the backing musicians increase in volume, the actual volume of the music does not increase. This is experienced as her voice receding on louder passages. This was done in order to prevent the stylus from skipping grooves on cheap turntables. But the compression was badly done and intrusive. Overall, if you are looking for the best sound quality buy the CD version. However, if you like the vinyl experience and are not seeking the best sounding version of the album go for the vinyl.

She had me with the first words on the first song, "you lit the candles on the cake, and threw the match down on the floor..." And her voice just gives and gives, and gives, always strong and certain. I love how hard the music is to pin down to any one genre, also. Definitely country, but so flavored with other influences, and Yola's powerful individuality that it really is its own genre. It has a 70s feel to it, and I mean that in a really good way, with that full orchestration, and overall positive outlook, and the sense of musicianship. This is a wonderful album.

Very much enjoy this album. My only caveat is the heavy production style. Auerbach has trended toward this heavier retro production sound for awhile now. I still like his stuff for the most part. I have watched her live sets on Utube, and she has such a great voice. My personal opinion is her work would be better represented with a simpler production but either way very good music. If you have not watched her preform live check it out. Her voice is as good or better live!

5.0 out of 5 stars UNA GRANDE VOCE, UN OTTIMO ESORDIO E UN ALBUM DA NON PERDERE
Reviewed in Italy on December 29, 2021
