Editorial Reviews
Review
Great book, this is extremely well done. The author has done incredible research and put it all together for the small-scale prospector in terms that are easy to understand. This may well become the 'modern prospector's bible' on Colorado gold prospecting. - Jim Long, President of Gold Prospectors of the Rockies
From the Author
My friend Don urged me toconsider writing a book and, with my wife's encouragement, I took up thechallenge. After several years of additional detailed research and field trips to every relevant part of Colorado, I had what I needed to make a real book.
Of course writing a book is its ownchallenge. I thought I was writing a 200 page book with a few dozen digsites; what I ended up with is a LOT more than that! At almost 500pages, and with almost 200 public dig sites, this book took my life over completely while I did the actual writing. I also included campingoptions in each area and lots of local history. With all this greatinformation, I am confident it will completely change your experience of exploring Colorado gold country with your gold pan in hand. "Find YOURGold!"
From the Inside Flap
Most of theprospecting sites included here are not promoted locally and are oftenunknown by local staff at visitor centers, museums and even prospectingshops. This is the problem I set out to solve when I started writing. Abig part of my goal in writing this book was to create the mostcomprehensive collection of information on where to dig in Colorado forcasual prospectors and visitors.
An important caution: There is NO other Colorado gold prospecting book available which works toavoid sending the reader to private land and is careful to guideprospectors away from areas subject to mining claim. Gold panning onprivate land or on someone else's' claim is illegal and wrong. The other Colorado gold panning guide books fail on this key issue. This failingis a primary reason Finding Gold in Colorado exists!
There are several types of intended readers of this book:
- Tourists and locals who find themselves in one of the towns highlighted in thebook. If you want to learn about the origin story of a mining town andwhat is worth visiting to see that history, this book is for you.
- People planning a trip to Colorado with a focus on gold prospecting and ourgold rush history. When planning a trip, you will want to use this bookalongside more conventional tourism resources, but I have tried toinclude some tips on places to stay and other basic logistics.
- And,of course, Colorado gold prospectors like me who want to learn about ouramazing history and to find more spots to dig. This book is for you inaway you will especially appreciate.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2020Kevin has done an excellent job in establishing a modern gold prospecting culture in Colorado through this book. Over the years the extraction industries have earned a reputation for plunder and leave. Kevin does an excellent job separating recreational gold seekers from these industries. He shows the way that those involved in this hobby can leave the stream and banks better than they found them, thus insuring access for their grandchildren and others.
