4.8 out of 5 stars 282 ratings

An illustrated record book of theropod facts and figures—from the biggest to the fastest to the smartest

The theropod dinosaurs ruled the planet for millions of years, with species ranging from the mighty
Tyrannosaurus rex to feathered raptors no bigger than turkeys. Dinosaur Facts and Figures is a stunningly illustrated book of records for these marvelous creatures—such as the biggest, the smallest, and the fastest theropods, as well as the ones with the most powerful bite.

This one-of-a-kind compendium features more than 3,000 records, covers some 750 theropod species, and includes a wealth of illustrations ranging from diagrams and technical drawings to full-color reconstructions of specimens. The book is divided into sections that put numerous amazing theropod facts at your fingertips. “Comparing Species” is organized by taxonomic group and gives comparisons of the size of species, how long ago they lived, and when they were discovered. “Mesozoic Calendar” includes spreads showing the positions of the continents at different geological time periods and reconstructions of creatures from each period. “Prehistoric Puzzle” compares bones, teeth, and feathers while “Theropod Life” uses vivid, user-friendly graphics to answer questions such as which dinosaur was the smartest and which had the most powerful bite. Other sections chart theropod distribution on the contemporary world map, provide comprehensive illustrated listings of footprints, compile the physical specifications of all known theropods and Mesozoic birds, and much more.

While definitely a book more for those who are true dinosaur enthusiasts like myself, it is written such a way as to be simple and informative to even novices to the subject of dinosaurs. Lavishly illustrated, it covers all the bases and facts regarding each group of theropod dinosaurs currently known. I've found several facts within it that I never knew and several specimens I'd never heard of. This book stands as a work of art in and of itself, and is well written (minus one noticeable grammar mistake that's a holdover of the book's translation due to it being written in another country). Thus, I highly recommend it for any personal library. It also would be a perfect reference book for any public library as well due to its relatively up-to-date information and depictions of theropod dinosaurs based on the latest fossil evidence.

Nice big book geared towards the dinosaur geek and not a casual read. It does a superb job of supplying information about the classification of the theropod dinosaurs. You must love learning the details to enjoy this book and may require coaching for the young reader.

As of 2020 this is basically as cutting-edge as a dinosaur fact/illustration book can get. Page after page of high quality art with massive amounts of info, tons of comparative charts lining dinos up against people and contemporary wildlife for size/scale. Because this is a therapod/dinosauriform book it also includes many examples of 'dino-birds,' aka the many many species of 'links' between therapods and modern birds. Suitable for kids and adults or just as a coffee table book.

My son is an avid dinosaur fan. I gave him this book for Christmas and it is by far the most adult dinosaur book I have seen. It is filled with a lot of information and the illustrations are great. It is aimed at an older crowd, so I don't think it would be appropriate for anyone younger than a preteen. My son has reread it a few times and really enjoys it immensely. Only complaint is that the book itself is quite heavy and bulky.

So often when it comes to nonfiction, you are left with either a scientifically focused book filled with grayscale diagrams or a more generalized publication that is colorful but doesn't delve deeply into the subject matter. But this book seems to have combined the best of both worlds. Exhaustive details on Therapods and early birds are accompanied by paleoart renditions that show the artists' skill and are vibrant additions and writing that is not as dry as most scientific compendiums.

If you love dinosaurs enough to desire a up-to-date work covering as many species of one big type as possible, then this is it. Everything you'd need to know about theropod dinosaurs including on Mesozoic birds from info on each species, many comparisons on fossils, footprints, location where particular parts were found, more chronologies than you need. This is perfect for professionals as well as lay people who are super interested, beyond the average book which gives you only a few dozen species. This has hundreds! Hope they cover the other types of dinosaurs soon. Best book out there!
