For years, I'd heard of original plans for this record to be a double album, only to be cut in half due to record company demands. Paul's first two solo albums were ahead of their time and were trashed by critics and didn't sell very well initially. After a successful college tour, he formed Wings and released the abominable WILD LIFE album. Based on VERY poor reception, Capitol / EMI decided that nobody wants to buy a double album by Paul McCartney & Wings, and they probably thought nobody wanted anything to do with Paul McCartney & Wings over all. They were wrong. They should have trusted them. So, Paul cut out half the tracks, but his mistake was cutting out the better tracks that make Red Rose Speedway a more substantial album. Now, this is sequenced differently than the CD packaging and there is some question as to whether or not this is the original sequencing, but...who cares what the idiots say...those eschewed songs are finally available in one package, without having to search all the cold cuts and 45 RPM b-sides, and on and on. Red Rose Speedway, in its initial release, was a warm, fuzzy, if pretty uneven and unfinished album, with such good songs notwithstanding. It always seemed like half an album to me, and for good reason. Half of it was missing for 250 years. Now, we get it all back, and the cut tracks are even better than the ones which were left in. I recommend getting the 2-CD set as well as this LP.
