The spirit, or “eidolon,” of late guitar great Allan Holdsworth lives on in this legendary live date from the mid-1980s in the land of the rising sun.

The first posthumously released album by the artist, it documents Holdsworth’s last performance with his I.O.U. band, featuring Jimmy Johnson on bass, Chad Wackerman on drums, and Paul Williams on vocals.

Holdsworth’s musical genius and ambidextrous virtuosity are on full display here, as the guitarist unleashes his trademark elegant lead phrasing, rapid-fire bursts of fluidity, and ethereal chord textures and colors.

Live in Japan 1984 is yet further proof that Holdsworth was a certified, undisputed master of new age jazz/rock fusion guitar.

Of Holdsworth’s three official live recordings to date, my favorite is 2002’s Then!, documenting a Tokyo show in 1990. That is Holdsworth at his best as the compositions are kinetic and he and his band are on fire.

However, that does not take away from the brilliance of Live in Japan 1984, which is the first of a projected series of live archival recordings from various points in Holdsworth’s solo career. I hope that the albums highlight featured performances from each of the following three decades, especially since Holdsworth continued to play live up until 2017.

Watching Holdsworth play is like watching a force of nature being controlled by someone with powers far beyond the comprehension of 'mere mortals'. The inclusion of the DVD of the concert in Tokyo in '84 is worth the price of admission itself, dramatically enhancing the experience of viewing such a landmark performance, especially the shots of Holdsworth soloing.
And let's talk about Chad Wackerman...I was speechless the first time I saw him on the DVD. There's not enough room, nor the time, to expound upon the absolute brilliance of his playing...
I can not recommend this enough. This is the man considered the greatest guitarist to ever live by people most of the rest of us consider to be the best (no need to name drop, mostly because we all know who they are..)

This dvd and cd comes from the early to mid-'80s Allan Holdsworth, back when I liked his playing best. This is well before he went off playing those awful guitar synthesizers and all his tunes started sounding the same. I think the years with I.O.U., Bruford, Ponty and so on are Allan at his most creative and absolute best guitar sound. I miss him and those kinds of magic guitar solos.

...Allan went full blown Holdsworth and left mere mortals like me scratching their collective heads. Truth be told I bought this not only because I loved this period in his career but more importantly it's one of the few live recordings by anyone where the wonderful and under appreciated Paul Williams is singing. The CD sounds just fine and all the players are at the top of their game and the DVD, while having some minor audio and video limitations that could have been cleaned up a bit with current technology, is a fine representation of the band as well.

A great example of how good the IOU Band was with the great playing of Allan Holdsworth on guitar.

While I was devastated by the unexpected passing of Allan Holdsworth and the tremendous loss to the music world I am thrilled that his family is releasing more of his brilliant work. Allan was notoriously self-critical and would not release a large amount of material he had completed/recorded live because of that perfectionism. Fortunately his family is now doing so and this fantastic album is the first result of their efforts. This is a great document of the I.O.U. band in 1984.

This has been my favorite Holdsworth release since the original Japanese edition came out in 1986. I have had a copy in one form or another since then and I am glad is has finally been officially released. I am a bit disappointed that it was not taken from the original laserdisc, since that would be the best source sans the original masters, but beggars cannot be choosers and I'm just glad to have it in my collection.

I have been blown away by Alan's playing for around 50 years. He is arguably the best ever. This concert is all guitar before the synthaxe era. Although the DVD has a couple glitches it is a revelation to watch him play. I hope his estate has a vault full of gems like this one. 6 star rating [ like Spinal Tap able to turn their amps up to 11]

If you're a Holdsworth fan, GET THIS. The video quality is not great as it was shot for Japanese TV a few decades ago, but for what it is, it is good video and well edited. The concert is excellent, and the musicians, of course, are incredible. As the description says, it's a great document of Holdsworth's style just prior to him diving into SynthAxe and adding a keyboard player for later albums. The I.O.U. song list is great, and you get the amazing Chad Wackerman on drums, one of my faves. But everyone is great, and above all the SOUND QUALITY is stellar. They must have done something to improve the sound, maybe a remaster, because both the DVD and CD both sound better than my original I.O.U. vinyl or CD releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magistrale e strepitoso album
