I really enjoyed this book! Such a fun read. I enjoyed the main character's goofy and witty sense of humor as she navigates life in a magical small town. And all the delicious and cozy descriptions of pie made me hungry. I dare you to read this book without devouring at least one slice of pie!

You know you are in for a good story when Susanna arrives in Hocus Hills singing a rousing chorus fro Annie. She is responding to an email plea from her long lost Aunt Erma to run a pie shop. Nothing stops Susanna in her search for Aunt Erma and hope to become a proficient baker. Despite incidents like sneezing on a fresh lump of dough, she starts over in her quest after every obstacle. Prepare for wry humor and an interesting plot that makes the reader want to know these quirky characters even better and follow their adventures in a village of magicians - both good and bad.

I guess I was hoping for something more like the Charmed Pie or Magical Bakery series. I felt like this book dragged in places. Also, why didn’t Suzanne follow some of the recipes in the darned cookbooks she bought from Flora? It’s just NOT that hard to make a decent pie!!! For these reasons and others, I found it hard to empathize with Suzanne. I liked the pie club group and would have liked reading about them helping Suzanne a bit more (by helping her make a pie, if nothing else!) or telling her more about her aunt. I already purchased the next in the series and hope it will be better.

I picked up this book just in order to stock myself up on the character dynamics and setting before diving into A Slice of Christmas Magic, the second book in The Magic Pie Shop series, and I must say it was a wise decision. Not only did I get the full scope of the story and understand everything I need to know, but this book lived up to my expectations.

First and foremost, I enjoyed the festive, magical, and fantasitical story.
As you can guess from the title, this book includes some magical elements woven in and there are a lot of allusions that there’s something funny to the townspeople as well as her aunt’s belongings. It also has some nice touch of mystery sprinkled in, it was fun to follow how things end up. But the thing is, the full-on magical/fantastical plot which I was looking for the most didn’t arrive until way past halfway through the book. A large chunk of the story was spent describing Susie’s futile attempts to save the business and the antagonism among Gina (the bossy and mean gym owner) and Susie’s competitor Alice, the owner of a newly opened cookie shop.
The writing is solid and good but as far as the plot goes, I found it rather slow-going.
While I did enjoy the overall story and rather immature tit-for-tat battles between Susie and her competitors, another part of me did wonder how long it was going to last and when I would actually see a magical plot happening. The middle part felt a tad dragging and superfluous, but the strong friendship with the Morning Pie Crew and the cozy, small-town vibe managed to keep me focused on the story without losing interest.

Then, around 70% in the book, magic finally happens. The secrets which was kept hidden from Susie for more than two decades is finally unraveled.

This is the point where the plot REALLY thickened and I had my nose so deep in the book.
As soon as the recognition dawns on Susie, everything starts to make sense and she sees the world differently. The shift both in Susie’s mind and the overall atmosphere was nicely executed and felt convincing. I liked how the two main elements - magical and mystery - finally converged and meld into one, wrapping things up leaving no loose ends.

For me, this last chunk of the book is the highlight of the story and the part that I most enjoyed.
Come to think of it, I did mention the middle part felt a bit slow and lackluster, but looking at it from the end of it now that things are done and dusted, it does make sense. If anything, it perfectly reflected Susie’s emotional state because she didn’t even realize what she really is and where she came from. Once the recognition sinks in on her, her world becomes much brighter and much more “magical” in the true sense of the word.

I think A Slice of Magic is a strong introduction to a new series and I would recommend reading this book BEFORE picking up the sequel.
I cannot really say if the sequel cannot be read as a standalone for having not read it yet, but you might want to get the background right before diving head first into the second book. You might miss out or feel confused until you get your bearings.

All in all, A Slice of Magic is a captivating, fun read interweaving magic, a bit of fantasy, and mystery, and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys those three genres.

In a divisive world, this book and the town of Hocus Hills is a sweet escape peppered with engaging characters and a lingering mystery that draws you in. I think it would especially resonate with young teens, with its message of different kinds of friendships. The only downside of this book is that after reading, I had a raging craving for pie!

After finishing a very good, but extremely intense novel, I knew that I needed to chose a very different book to read next--so I chose this one. And I am really glad that I did! Ridiculous and filled with absurbity the story in this novel took off right away. I adored the small very unusual town the story took place in and the characters that lived there. I really enjoyed Susanna, the main character, she was a fresh voice and FUN!

After finishing the story I was reminded of the feeling I get after reading a Dorothy Gilman book, a sort of happiness, knowing that the whole thing is ridiculous, but loving to have be cast into this world!

A lovely piece of whimsical escapism. I enjoyed this book, it’s like a fairy tale for adults. Just the kind of light hearted reading I needed after a hard day.

This book had been sitting in my TBR list since January when I had a chance to review the second book so I finally got around to reading it.
Susie is asked by her estranged Aunt Emma to help her in her pie shop, however when Susie arrived she is nowhere to be found. After a very rough start Susie, who has no great experience with making pies, gradually starts improving when she stumbles across her Aunt's secret spices to add to the pies.
Competition has opened up in the form of a cookie shop which is taking significant business away which suddenly becomes even more popular coincidentally with the theft of the special spices from Emma's shop.
A good start for a new (to me at least) author, spoiler alert - the second book takes the story on well
