- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2018Years ago, and 30 years after its release, I purchased this album on CD. To say it was life changing is being a little overdramatic, but when you consider this is Sinatra, this is Riddle, and this collection of songs contains many from the Great American Songbook; when you look at the album's artwork on the cover and see a Pagliacci-style painting of Sinatra (who ironically had a fear of clowns) that even more ironically won a Grammy that year, maybe overdramatic isn't such a bad adjective.
This storied and favorite torch song collection has been long the subject of music lovers, broken hearted or otherwise, for decades. The lush, understated (and sometimes) jazz tinged arrangements were, again, written by Nelson Riddle, that arranger who set the standard, during a particularly difficult time of loss in his personal life. He's been quoted that those losses helped him maintain the somberness of moods in his charts. Sinatra, for his part, wanted Gordon Jenkins to do this album, but Mr. Jenkins was unavailable; the project went to Riddle, and with more time to write the charts than Riddle was accustomed to being afforded by Frank. Clearly, the results are still stunning (and cathartic?) 60 years later. For my money, and probably yours too, the gem here is the first official release of sessions on May 29 of '58, when Sinatra attempted the glorious Billy Strayhorn monument, "Lush Life". With Nelson Riddle out on the road, his counterpart the great and underappreciated concertmaster Felix Slatkin was at the helm. Of the little we hear, the arrangement was probably sensational. But most singers (and listeners) will tell you, the song is no sail through when trying to perform it. Riddle's chart had tempo changes and key changes that frustrated Sinatra, (as we hear) to the point of "putting it aside". One can only wonder what the finished product might have been (or if Riddle himself had been present, could he have gotten at least another take or two out of Frank?) The additional bonus tracks, including a long session of (and including the ultimately panned alternate orchestral intro) of Angel Eyes are a welcome glimpse into the inner workings of these geniuses in the studio. (what else can be said of Sinatra singing Angel Eyes? I do like the way they originally did the intro!) This is Sinatra's masterpiece of 1958, presented in great sound and decent packaging (I'm no fan of cardboard digipaks) with added photos and commentary, as well as session information. A fitting anniversary edition.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2019I have been listening to this recording since I was born over 60 years ago. It was one of my Mom's favorite recordings. I grew up with Frank Sinatra being played in my house. When I was a teen I discovered the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Laura Nyro, the music of my generation. But this recording was never too far from my turntable, and then later on my CD player. This is a landmark recording by the greatest male vocalist in the world. The person who created a landscape for others to follow. He created "Concept" albums. This being one of them, and I believe the first one ever made. When Frank reaches for notes and hits them, you are driven upward with him on his quest to let you know what those words mean to him, as well as you the listener. Not many can give you that kind of emotional output while singing.
Many great vocalists create an unattached emotional feeling to you the listener. Great performances rather than a journey through the singers soul. (See Lady Gaga & Barbra Streisand for that type of journey - Brilliant and It has its merits but no real content with true emotional vulnerability - yes technically off the map but not my cup of tea compared to Frank Sinatra) So I say, get this recording. Sit down and realize you are about to go somewhere with someone who has been there. You are not alone in what you feel. Frank is feeling it with you. Amazing arrangements by Nelson Riddle who outdoes what he does over and over. (Think George Martin's arrangement of the Beatles "I Am the Walrus" over and over and over) Brilliant stuff!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2022This has to be one of the highest quality sounding vinyl albums I've ever heard. It's like Frankie is right there in your living room. So warm, natural and present. I balk at high vinyl prices, but this is reasonable and worth every penny. I chose this one because I like to relax to albums and this one is on the slow side. So beautiful and tranquil you can take a deep breath and be transported. Do not expect finger snapping rat pack style - do expect thoughtful, interpretive saloon style - and you won't be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2024I have two early vinyls that I cherish. Yet, The remix is a joy, as are the bonus track. Kudos to the packaging and booklet as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2020Okay, I'm going to use a tired cliche....'they don't make records like this anymore'. But the reality is....it's true! Sinatra was the consummate professional when he made records at Capitol and he demanded the very best out of his arrangers and musicians. 'Only The Lonely' is all about a certain mood (loneliness) and each of the songs presented are meticulously arranged, produced, selected and sequenced to convey that mood to the listener. I like having this album both in mono and stereo because there are unique differences between the two. The mono mix brings Sinatra's vocals front and center while the stereo version places them in amongst the orchestration. It's like listening to two different albums!
I would purchase this while you can. ALL of Sinatra's albums on Capitol are essential listening. Among my other favorites are "Songs For Young Lovers", "Songs For Swinging Lovers" and "Come Fly With Me".
Happy listening!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2023If you're deeply in love and wonder what it would be like without that love, the lyric to "Only the Lonely" tells you. Very moving. Yes, many of the other songs are also melancholic, but it's cathartic. A very emotional LP.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2018This is a marvelous album, but I was disappointed to learn that I cannot hear it over my Amazon Echo system. At least that’s what an Amazon rep told me when I asked why I was unable to download the stereo album into Amazon Music even though I bought it from Amazon. Something to do with a new policy limiting what Echo owners can hear on their devices. I find this puzzling and very shortsighted on Amazon’s part.

5.0 out of 5 stars The blue eyes!
Edição de 60 anos! One for my baby por si só já vale esse álbum! Gravada pela primeira vez em 1947 por Sinatra, essa versão é de 1958.
Um brinde para minha garota... e depois a saideira!

5.0 out of 5 stars Un excellent Sinatra
Avec une version "mono" d'origine et l'autre en "stéréo", encore un excellent cru de Sinatra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Die Melacholische
Meine Mutter und ich haben sie heute gehört: bester Klang und Ausstattung,...-aber sehr traurig. Eben nur für Einsame, wie der Titel schon sagt. Uns hat sie sie sehr gefallen, old Frankie-Boy!
