Sailing to the Edge of Time: The Promise, the Challenges, and the Freedom of Ocean Voyaging Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 673 ratings

John Kretschmer is sailing's practical philosopher – as much a doer as a thinker. And that is the overarching theme of this chronicle of a sailing life. Often amusing, sometimes poignant, occasionally terrifying but always inspiring, his deeply personal account is a welcome reminder of the good life waiting at sea.

With hundreds of thousands of nautical miles under his keel, John's adventures have taken him several times around the world, with challenging crossings of the Atlantic and the Pacific, a narrow escape from a coup in Yemen, an unlikely deliverance from a coral reef off Belize as well as more serene, introspective passages where trade winds are blowing and stories are flowing. His crew has included CEOs, actors, writers, teachers, kids – in essence, everyone.

John's narrative is interwoven with practical tips and advice in seamanship, but also, and just as importantly, his hard-won insights about making the most of our lives. He truly believes we find out who we really are, and what we are capable of, far from the shackles of land, when we find a place where time changes shape – days may merge into one another, but minutes are memorable.

To live adventurously is to live more fully, and that is the life John Kretschmer continues to live. In this book he shares his simple profundities that will inspire those who live to sail, and those seeking something more rewarding from life.

"[A] poignant, yet relatable tale … Kretschmer tells an insightful and quietly triumphant story." -
Sail Magazine

"[E]vocative and profound … indispensable … fascinating … A must-have for any sailor’s library." -
The Florida Times Union

" ''Kretch' as his friends call him is a successful businessman, a compelling lecturer and raconteur and a splendid writer. This new book reminds me of Joseph Conrad’s first book
The Mirror of the Sea, which was a memoir from his life as a ship captain and a refection on what a life at sea can teach an observant and thoughtful person. Kretch just may by our own modern-day Conrad, which in my book is no small thing. If you love sailing, life and good writing, you’ll enjoy Sailing to the Edge of Time." - Blue Water Sailing

"Kretschmer’s style as a storyteller is well defined, but in Sailing to the Edge of Time, readers will find hints of a new side of the sailor, one that contemplates bigger questions." -
Sailing Magazine

"Filled with all the adventure one expects from someone who has sailed around the world, it is also a poignant and inspirational account of how to live your life to the fullest. Kretschmer is not only a sailor; he’s a philosopher, and if you’re at all interested in thinking as deep as the ocean, this book is perfect for you." -

I wrote in my memoir, FLIRTiNG WITH MERMAIDS, "I make landfalls for a living." That's not a bad way to navigate through life. But it's only partially true. I have been fortunate to blend my two passions, boats and books, and make a living by sailing and writing. As a kid I confounded practical minded advisers trying to steer me toward a career. I told them I wanted to be an explorer. When pressed for details I explained that I wanted to sail all over the world and write books and articles about my adventures. Amazingly, that's how it has turned out.

My new book, SAILING TO THE EDGE OF TIME: The Promise, the Challenges, and the Freedom of Ocean voyaging was just published by Bloomsbury. The premise is simple - what matters is time, it is the currency of our life, and how spend it defines our life. I know that time spent sailing, especially deep ocean sailing, far from the shackles land life, where time unfolds slowly and you live in the unsentimental moment, is time well spent. This the book I have been writing my entire adult life. It's amusing, sometimes terrifying, poignant and inspiring. It is a deeply personal account that blends sea stories with seamanship, and reminds us that there is a good life waiting at sea.

My first book, CAPE HORN TO STARBOARD, first published by McGraw Hill in 1986, is a coming of age story that chronicles my record-breaking voyage around Cape Horn. It was reprinted by Burford Books in 2010. FLIRTING WITH MERMAIDS, is a long running nautical bestseller and still in print 20 years after being first published. Just this year it was selected as one of Lyon's Press Mariner's Classics, and reprinted with a new cover. It is a funny and uplifting look at the life of a professional sailboat delivery captain and all the mischief that entails. AT THE MERCY OF THE SEA, is a narrative account of three sailors converging in the eye of a hurricane. It's a sad but profound story, and I worked hard to get it right. It's a book I am proud. It was chosen by the Southern Booksellers Association as one of the 25 best nonfiction books of 2007. It was optioned by cassiopeia-pictures in England. SAILING A SERIOUS OCEAN- Sailboats, Storms, Stories, and Lessons Learned from 30 Years at Sea is an exciting mix of sea stories and seamanship. It's personal, humorous and at times terrifying. Learn what makes a boat blue water capable and how to handle it and the crew when the ocean turns angry. The book is filled with anecdotes and hard-won advice. It has consistently been one of the best selling nautical and adventure travel books worldwide

I have been a contributing editor and columnist for Sailing Magazine for twenty-five years. My column,THE USED BOAT NOTEBOOK has been compiled in two volumes, both available at Amazon.com. I wrote a sailing/travel column for the Miami Herald and an online column for Sailnet.com for many years. I have written hundreds of magazine articles including features in, Islands, Newsday and the Los Angeles Times Magazine. I won coveted Boating Writers International awards in 2013 and 2014 for features in Cruising World Magazine and Sail Magazine.

I have logged 300,000 blue water miles including 20 Atlantic crossings. My passages and expeditions have taken me all over the watery part of the planet. I own a 47' sailboat, Quetzal, and conduct sail training passages and serious, adventure travel expeditions. For a schedule of upcoming passages check out, www.johnkretschmersailing.com Thanks for checking out my books.

Fantastic storytelling!

Fantastic storytelling!
This is a great book written by a great writer and sailor! I attended a talk given by the author and was very inspired by his storytelling with themes of freedom, adventure and living an authentic life. You don't need to be a sailor to be entertained and moved by his stories and insights. Highly recommended!

Beyond Kretchmer’s interesting, harrowing, humorous and enlightening stories, he captures the spirit of being on the water like few nautical authors. He’s reaffirmed my spiritual attitude about sailing and deepened my understanding of offshore passagemaking. Have an atlas or set of charts handy when you read it; seeing the places he describes while you read will heighten the experience. And, as usual, he refers to a number of books that I’ve added to my boating library, so have a pencil on the ready as well.

Since reading this book, I have made a passage with John from the USVI to the Chesapeake. This book and each of his others embody a deep understanding and respect for sailing oceans. He is as down to earth and kind as anyone you would ever meet and that spirit is clearly evident in his writing. Read this book, and every other book he has written. You won't be sorry.

Beautifully written, the book is more than a simply a series of sea stories - harrowing and humorous as they can be. It is truly a voyage to the edge of time, in which, along with Kretschmer, we contemplate how a life at sea inspires one to contemplate the deeper meanings of our existence. Highly recommended not only for salty dogs, but for those who simply wonder what a life of spent sailing the great blue marble is like.

Good war stories set the stage for lots of valuable tips on bluewater sailing. However, the reader is apparently an amateur and not a sailor, so be prepared for annoyance at a plethora of irritating and unforgiveable mispronunciations even of common language, non-sailing words... .

John is not only one of the worlds most experienced and knowledgeable sailors, but he is an excellent story teller/writer. The wisdom he imparts is both helpful to all sailors (sail or power) and very enjoyable to read.

Kretschmer letting you see a little more than just his sailing passion. Dives deeper into his thoughts on sailings past and future, his close friendships he has formed in his years at sea, the use of electronics, his insight on the "right boat", and much more that you don't see in some of his earlier work. Less of a story collection and more of a memoir. I will re-read it for sure.

Ottima lettura.
