Editorial Reviews

Eric Clapton’s first ever full-length studio holiday album, Happy Xmas, is on Clapton’s Bushbranch Records/Surfdog Records. Happy Xmas is Clapton’s 24th studio album and his first since 2016’s “I Still Do.” It mixes instantly recognizable holiday classics with lesser-known unique titles along with an original new song “For Love On Christmas Day.” The album also features cover art illustration by Clapton himself.

If you like Eric Clapton you will love this. One of the better Christmas albums around, the recording is outstanding, the blues feel on some traditional songs make them better in my opinion.

Whether you're a Clapton fan or not this is truly a great Christmas album. Focusing mainly on the sad side of the holiday, when so many people mourn the loss of a loved one or the love of their life. Clapton's pain shines through and it's impossible to not grieve alongside him. Every year I buy at least two or three new Christmas albums (yes, my collection is insane), but it's rare when I enjoy NEW Christmas music. Here, the only clunker is a strange instrumental that isn't the least reminiscent of Christmas. Clearly it was put in as filler. Even the old standards are voiced in a new and exciting way. Clapton I think enjoyed making this album, in between all the tears and heartache. I will be saying a prayer for the man as he celebrates another Christmas with such a huge hole in his heart. God bless you Eric Clapton. And Merry Christmas too.

I've had this one for a couple of Christmas seasons, and I've played it numerous times. Enough to know it's a good 'un. As I recall, I wasn't all that sure about it upon first couple of plays, but it has definitely grown on me over time. A good blend of classic, traditional, and original Christmas material, with Mr. Clapton in his low-key J.J. Cale-style vocal mode and supported by his usual coterie of top-flight musicians. If you're a fan of pop culture Christmas releases, this one should be in your collection. Four Christmas wreaths, and definitely recommended.

Every Holiday Season I buy at least one new Christmas record to add to my collection. Buying this Eric Clapton ( Happy Xmas ) record was a no brainer as his music and style are always top notch.

So, on a beautiful cool winter day in Miami Florida, on my way to work, I popped in the c.d. and prepared for a little Holiday Spirit. It didn’t take long to hear that this collection of songs, many of which are original songs, was a cut above the rest. The recording quality is excellent and the musicians are among the best in the business. Eric Clapton’s voice and signature guitar work couldn’t be better.

The traditional songs have a more modern twist and the original songs bring their own shinning light. I particularly enjoy the new songs, “Everyday feels like a Holiday, Christmas in my Home Town and It’s Christmas”. The next two songs to highlight are “Christmas Tears and Lonesome Christmas”. Both songs have an authentic bluesy feel, a style where Eric Clapton always excels.
But, the sparkling gem of them all is the song “Sentimental Moments”. The kind of song that puts a smile on your face and a tear in your eye at the same time. Very few songs today have the ability to take you to that special place in the heart and the mind, but Sir Eric Clapton and friends show us they know the secret. Thank you Eric for helping to make this 2019 Christmas even more Merry and Bright. Oh, by the way, Happy 2020 New Year to everyone, ☮️

Period. Before this it was Hall & Oates' Home for Christmas but for me now, this is 56 minutes of Holiday cheer. The one I reach for first after Thanksgiving. For Love on Christmas Day makes me well up every time. You will too! Well Done E.C. Can't wait for another. This'll be hard to top, though. But if you do it, we'll buy it! Merry Christmas and Thank you Very much Eric!

Ya know, they complain about cultural appropriation when some white guy sings the blues, or when someone sells Native American merchandise who is European, but they never seem to gripe about the Jewish artists cranking out Christmas LP's, appropriating the biggest Holiday of the Christian faith. The list is endless. Jewish Irving Berlin wrote White Christmas for crimes sake. Anyway, once you get past that this is a fine performance, and a quality recording. Don't be put off by the fast that it's a double album, because it isn't. The discs play at 45 RPM so just under half the material fits on each disc. Higher RPM gives you higher fidelity, better frequency response, etc. So it's a top quality set. "Jingle Bells" does not belong on here. It's completely different in style and feel than every other track on here and completely ruins the flow of an otherwise fine set. It is dedicated to a Swedish DJ who had some mental health issues and committed suicide. Sorry for being insensitive but we don't need this sadness and this horrible techno track (or whatever it is) on this otherwise great Clapton Christmas album. Overall, worth buying.

The CD comes in a cardboard cd holder. The booklet is inside the left pocket. The CD is in the right pocket. I like the artwork. I don't mind the cardboard box as long as the CD is not all scratched up. However, I have too much expectation. I thought this would be a whole lot of blue Christmas and guitar. There are only 2 songs that have a lot of blue and guitar. The rest of the CD are borderline Jazz without the saxophone, trumpet or the like.

    Listen as your own risk.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique and Sexy X'mas Album
Reviewed in Canada on November 15, 2018
I'm so glad that Eric Clapton is still making new music at 73. His new X'mas album is one of the best Holiday albums I've heard in years. But for you to like it, you must be a Clapton fan or a blues fan or both. Even though the album encompasses traditional songs such as "Silent Night" and "Jingles Bell," it was not produced in the run-of-the-mill jolly and festive way. After all, Clapton is known for his guitar, his husky voice and his blues! As a rock-and-roll and blues fan, I am not disappointed - most of the songs in this album show off Clapton's guitar chops and even the jolliest tune has a "bluesy" feel which is exactly what I want. While every song is a combination of soft rock and blues, my favourite one is the only original song written by Clapton on this album - "For Love On Christmas Day" - so sad and yet so happy during this festive season. In "Silent Night," Clapton features his daughters as back-up singers which I thought was very sweet since Christmas is very much a family affair. Even my least favourite track on this album, "Jingle Bells' which was rearranged by Clapton and his team as an instrumental interpretation with no singing, is so creative and different. At 73, Clapton's husky voice is still sexy and wailing. With age also comes humour - the record cover features a Santa Claus drawn and signed personally by EC with kisses. This is definitely a collector's album. Good music often gives me goosebumps and this one certainly did, over and over again every time when I played the CD. Happy X'mas to EC too and I hope he will never retire!
