He boasted his empire would last a thousand years; it collapsed within a decade.

This was Adolf Hitler's Europe - the formidable fortress that cast its last shadow across half the world and which, indeed, seemed nearly ready to sustain itself for a millennium. But it was corroding from within before the Allies stormed the walls.

The Fall of Europe tells us why.

Fred Majdalany's sweeping history condenses an enormous amount of material with precision and grace, unraveling the story of the Nazi collapse and offering fresh insights into the men who shaped the most massive of wars.

This book is well-written and well-researched and told me a lot about World War II that I didn’t know. After taking most of Europe, Adolf Hitler coveted England. That obsession drove his military strategy and led to mistakes that caused his eventual defeat.

For starters, he decided to take Russia first to prevent that country from coming to England’s defense. When the Russians surprised the Germans with their strength, Hitler blamed his generals. From that point on and to his detriment, he wouldn’t listen to them.

He was so certain his troops would defeat the Russians before winter that he sent them in with no gear to keep them from freezing. When they got bogged down in one of the coldest winters ever experienced, he still refused to send heavy coats and boots. Many of his own soldiers died from exposure.

The author takes you through Hitler’s strategic and tactical errors, while revealing the mind of the narcissistic, often delusional dictator.

Well-developed, sharply focused history.

Highly recommended.

I liked the detailed statistics, I have read several other accounts if WW 2, but this one tied it together for me.

Maps would have been a very helpful addition.

For readers who love military history, this book will be thrilling. In vivid, descriptive language, historian and World War II veteran Fred Majdalany tells the extraordinary story of how Adolf Hitler conquered nearly the whole of Europe, then lost it through a series of miscalculations, arrogance, and obsession.

For those unfamiliar with the military side of Hitler’s power, this well-told story is an eye-opener. Hitler wasn’t the only one who made mistakes, though. The Allies made their share. It sometimes seemed as though coincidences, weather, and near-miracles were more responsible for the Allied victory than military brilliance.

Along the way, you will meet the men who chafed under Hitler’s command and tried unsuccessfully to, first, get the Führer to change his doomed tactics, and then, finally, plotted unsuccessfully to assassinate him. It’s unusual as well to have this story told from Hitler’s side. This book is never boring.

As far as it goes, this is a worthwhile book. It would be useful to have maps for some of the discussion, as not everyone is extensively knowledgeable about the locations of actions in WWII. It starts with the initial defeats of the NAZIS, stops short of the occupation of Berlin and the surrender. The author is free with opinions - the demand for unconditional surrender being one issue where this is evident and where the author fails to back up or discuss the reasons for this other than to assert that it would have shortened the war. No discussion on anything but the overall strategic actions -- you will not find herein any discussion of resistance, of the concentration camps (not even where it impacted the military) or other issues. Still, it has a lot of information regarding this specific aspect of WWII, and on that basis, I can recommend it to others.

I have read a thousand books on WW2 as my Dad fought with Simpson in the 1st Army, he landed at Omaha D plus 6, fought in the Falise Gap Batlle of Bulge and complained on his death bed about “ guarding German POWs for over a month, that didn’t want to escape while we sat on our ass and let the Russians take Berlin”.

This is the best book I have ever read

Very unique insights into WW2 from a German perspective. Also does an excellent job in explaining the timing and importance of key battles and events during the conflict.

Very good reading. It covered the decision made by the Germans and the Allies. It reversed the inner workings of the German command and were they made their mistakes.

This is one of the very few writers who can clearly explain complex campaigns and strategy, knitting it together with the great personalities involved and create a gripping narrative for the general reader. This too short book is easily the best of its kind and I've read an awful lot of them.
