Editorial Reviews

Carousel is the most nominated show of the 2017-2018 Broadway season. Nominated for 11 Tony Awards including "Best Revival of a Musical," this is the first new production of the beloved musical in over 20 years. Stars on this original cast recording include Joshua Henry, Jessie Mueller and Renee Fleming, who is making her Broadway debut. TIME Magazine proclaimed that Carousel "set the standard for the 20th-century musical", and the show is widely considered to be Rodgers & Hammerstein's greatest

I do not generally buy the “new Broadway cast” versions of revivals of musicals. The primary exception has always been the replacement of CD=R versions from my original LP’s. Yes, those casts are iconic, but I listen with high-end sound systems, and recording capabilities are vastly better versus the recordings from the LP era. During my opera phase, I had opted for the studio recording (1987) with Samuel Ramey and Barbara Cook as principals. In recent years, with Broadway as my favorite recording pastime, I have disliked this version. The large orchestra provides a great sound, but the principals, particularly Barbara Cook, do not cut it as young people.
Here, where the production is investing in Renee Fleming, music is obviously paramount. Every aspect of the music for this recording is terrific. It sounds like a recording of a Broadway show. Here there are fresh young singers as the principals, all of the orchestral music is great with the theater orchestra, and then there is Renee Fleming, to whom it is always a joy to listen. Fortunately I have a summer home, so my redundant cast albums always have a home. Some day I am sure that I will decide to endure an older Barbara Cook one more time, but otherwise I will be listening to this one as soon as I get back to my primary residence.

I had the pleasure of seeing this production in early April, 2018 and this wonderful CD brings back the incredible experience of that evening. Carousel is Rogers and Hammerstein's most beautiful and memorable score of all the wonderful musicals they have written. I have seen several productions of Carousel over the years, including Nicholas Hytner's production at the Lincoln Center in 1994. All had their merits and were enjoyable, mainly because of the music. But this current production on Broadway takes the prize. The orchestrations and arrangements are fresh and lush, the choreography spectacular, and the vocals magnificent. Joshua Henry and Jessie Mueller bring fresh life and strong vocals to their characters, Julie and Billy. Joshua Henry's Soliloquy is the best I have heard, with so much personal passion. Seeing and listening to Renee Fleming is always a special treat. Her presence in this production enhances the specialness of this theatrical experience. Run, don't walk to see this NY production. The next best thing is this CD. Experiencing both is NERVANA

One of Rodgers & Hammerstein's best scores, it gets a wonderfully fresh treatment here.
One wishes there was more music for Jessie Mueller to sing, but her flexible tones are lovely throughout.
Josh Henry is great and his "Soliloquy" is definitely his own.
Any time Renee Fleming opens her mouth on this disc is pure joy. They have added obligato lines for her and any time she goes for the high notes on the chorus numbers, you get that power you want the number to have. Brava diva!
Jonathan Tunick's new orchestrations are lovely and the male chorus, in particular, sound great.
I dare not forget our Tony winning Lindsay Mendez, who sounds charming throughout, especially when paired with Alex Gemignani. She won't make you forget Audra McDonald's vocals from 94, but her take on this role is just as valid.

I was lucky enough to see the show in the spring and loved it. Glad Justin Peck won the choreography Tony. I think of all the productions I have seen this had the most outstanding dancing. Amar Ramasar was a superb Jigger. I knew Joshua Henry would do wonders with "Soliloquy" and he doesn't disappoint The entire cast is great and how nice that Renee Fleming is playing Cousin Nettie. This is well worth having along with the Lincoln Center recording that introduced Audra (then Audra Ann) McDonald to Broadway.

The music is beautiful on this album. However I'm I can't seem to play it on my Amazon echo? This is confusing since every other album I bought from Amazon I can play on the Echo. Has something about this Service changed?

THIS recording is THE most intoxicating cast album. The Carousel Waltz will bring you to chills, it's that perfect. As for Jessie Mueller? Jessie should be a national treasure. And Lindsay Mendez? She is amazing. Her rendition of "Mister Snow," would make Rogers & Hammerstein proud! Joshua Henry and Renee Fleming are wonderful. Seriously, this is the most joyous of cast albums ever

Having had the opportunity to see Carousel on Broadway, I believe this recording is better. Certainly, a studio venue helps and so does a bigger orchestra. I find Joshua Henry's rendition of Soliloquy even more powerful here than on stage.
Since the recording was released after the show opened, I much enjoyed the photos taken of actual scenes in the performance contained in the enclosed booklet. It easily brought back memories of a great performance.

I saw this production on Broadway and had to have the cast recording as well. The music is the best part of this musical and the soundtrack does not disappoint. The singers, orchestra and sound quality are all exquisite. A must-have for any musical theatre connoisseur.

Have loved this great musical for years but for various reasons, never acquired a recording of it. This one, from a 2018 Broadway revival, is very good and may even be a little better sound wise than the original Macrae/Jones OST.
