Product Description

Brand New HD Restoration from the Original Camera Negative! Legendary filmmaker Michael Mann (Thief, Heat, The Last of the Mohicans) made his feature-length directorial debut with this classic TV movie starring the incredible Peter Strauss (Rich Man, Poor Man) as Rain Murphy, a man serving a life sentence for killing his father. A man whose home is Folsom Prison, a place where only the toughest breed of criminals – murderers, rapists and armed robbers – are sent. His passion is running… he runs to escape the mean and hopeless life he must lead; to free himself from the inmate tensions and power struggles. Then he’s given a chance… a chance to train for the Olympics… a chance at glory and freedom. The stellar cast includes Richard Lawson (Poltergeist), Roger E. Mosley (TV’s Magnum, P.I.) Brian Dennehy (F/X, F/X2), Geoffrey Lewis (Thunderbolt and Lightfoot), Billy Green Bush (Monte Walsh), Ed Lauter (Breakheart Pass), Beverly Todd (Lean on Me), William Prince (The Gauntlet) and Richard Moll (TV’s Night Court). Michael Mann’s brilliant directorial debut is about a brooding prisoner named Larry ‘Rain’ Murphy, played sensationally by Peter Strauss in Emmy winning performance, who is doing life for murdering his abusive father. He runs around all day in the yard, the only thing is he has no idea just how fast he is running. His amazing speed captures the attention of officials who contemplate entering him in the Olympics. Fine supporting performances by Richard Lawson, Roger E. Mosley, Brian Dennehy, Geoffrey Lewis, and Ed Lauter. Powerfully entertaining and dramatically potent. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent movie. I fist saw this movie when it was broadcast and have looked for it ever since. Finally got it, it was a good even better than I remembered. It was made for TV and has excellent actors and the cast of extras is phenomenal IWatch the credits an you'll see why I say this). There are stereotypes galore but all of them a broken by the end of the movie. the movie has multiple twists and turns. Some are predictable most are not.

Just as I remember it from the original airing. Whenever there is conversation about TV movies. This is always at the top of my list. So glad it is now available on DVD. What a treat. There is not a bad performance by anyone. Michael Mann knows great talent! On a side note, Peter Strauss--best hair!!

The dream of "The Jericho Mile" began long before it's television debut. For those of "us" who had/have family or friends who were non-paid "participants" to this emotionally inspiring movie of basic human triumph. With time so abundant in prison the need for a watch is not necessary. But with a stop-watch, freedom is just a few minutes away. The use of real prison inmates in one of California's toughest penitentiaries brings to life the spririt of "brotherhood" and the harsh reality of everyday prison life in Folsom. With the new Olympic sanctioned race track, Rain Murphy runs not only for Olympic gold but for the "The Jericho Mile".

I had a VHS recording of this movie that had been out of print for a long time. Whoever rereleased this movie to DVDF did a good job. I'm very satisfied.

This has been a movie we have watched over and over through the years. Unfortunately it was on VHS. I was thrilled to find it was on DVD.

I've always been a huge Peter Strauss fan. I was glad to see that this movie came out on DVD at last. Strauss won an "Emmy" for this role. Excellent ensemble cast too. Don't let this one pass you by.

Michael Mann’s debut feature (made for TV) features all his obsessions and potent style, and ranks among his finest works. Stark, intense and blisteringly unsentimental, this minor masterpiece get an overdue Blu-ray release. A must for all Mann devotees.

A hard TV movie, but at the end extremely touching on the prison world ... still relevant.
The copy of the blu-ray is excellent. An unexpected edition of this first work by Michael Mann.
