    I've had the Warner/Martinon (with the Orchestre de Paris) set for a couple of years, which is also fantastic and another mainstay. But this was my first Cluytens set, and it really is marvelous. The sound quality is great despite the dated recordings. On every song I cannot help but think that I hear a line or an instrument or a section that I have not heard before. These are conservatory professors and students playing, and although these are not technically flawless performances (a la Martinon), the pathos and raw energy come through enormously and so much better. The Pavane is a little slower than I prefer, but that's just a matter of interpretation, and it's still gorgeous. The Bolero is earth-shaking, brilliant music. I bought it more for the orchestral music, but the piano solos are flawless and great addition. Great, great recording.

    What’s not to like? Maurice Ravel’s beautiful music played by an orchestra with a wonderful timbre suited to the music. The conductor is André Cluytens, a master in the French repertoire who gives us reference recordings of ‘Daphnís et Chloë’ & ‘Ma mère l’Oye’. A fantastic bargain!

    Anyone who has heard his Beethoven Symphony box on Erato knows that his understanding and grace with Beethoven is memorable. I love Ravel and figured that is would be equally brilliant, which it certainly is. Beautifully remastered and they sound newly recorded.

    I've got piles and piles of Ravel. I love Ravel. I stumbled across this set on Amazon and was able to stream it free with my Prime. The sound was not good, but that's true of almost all Amazon streaming. But I loved the performances and put my order in The CD's are amazingly present, dynamic, and full range. The both the solo piano and orchestral performances are dynamite-- All excellent! Especially La Valse, and Daphnis et Chloe. These recordings are from the late 50s and early 60's but all of the orchestral and 99 percent of the solo piano are stereo. I have so many recordings I would never want to be without, but if I were to pick a set to recommend to someone who wants to get to know Ravel, this one would be a top choice. Cluytens and Francois are superb.

    For people who like their French music performed with a genuinely characteristically French sound from the orchestra and evident French sensibilities this is a really great set. The orchestra has a reedy, slightly dry, almost scrappy sound with punchy woodwind - this is definitely not the BPO under Karajan, no great lushness here. It is all very characterful and the playing is great within its national characteristic sound-world. These sounds are being lost as orchestras become more homogeneous no matter where they are and it is wonderful to hear Ravel performed in this manner. These are thoughtful, careful, respectful readings too, but there is no lack of emotional engagement, it is just less direct than the Germanic performance tradition might produce. The pianist Samson Francois was clearly a phenomenon, deeply expressive and virtuosic playing here with a deal of temperament on display too. His performances are fascinating and for me he is a wonderful discovery. The piano, or perhaps the recording itself, is not the most sonorous but then again the kind of sonority one gets used to from the Germanic tradition is perhaps not required here in this music. The set is a real pleasure and a great record of a style of performance that is being lost.
