Editorial Reviews

So arrives the long-awaited, self-titled debut album from the quintet. A brilliantly executed set overflowing with inventive style, stellar musicianship, and, of course, plenty of burnin’ grass, the 14-song collection is a true culmination of their decades-long journey. From the headwaters of Bill Monroe and the waves of Jerry Garcia to a sound both rooted and revolutionary, soulful and transcending that belongs only to the Travelin’ McCourys...this album went on to win a Grammy fo Best Bluegrass Album.

Great great recording by this supremely talented bluegrass band. Being a Del McCoury devotee I am thrilled by this disc even though it lacks Del. The band proves that it can shine without the best lead singer in bluegrass and still put out a spectacular album. Needless to say the musicianship here is truly astounding. And the vocals are really excellent with Ronnie even sounding a bit like his Dad. Ronnie's mandolin playing is unmatched in the genre (IMHO). This group is likely the most talented, next to the DMB, out there. Cody Kilby does a real fine job on guitar replacing Del (well one can't really replace Del). Rob and Jason are fantastic on this disc as well as Alan is on upright bass. It's difficult to pick a favorite track on this album due to the overall strength of each and every song. The features some nice instrumentals with the Ronnie penned tune "Crowhop" being a fine example of what bluegrass instrumentals should be. Alan Bartram's song "The Shaker" is a super tune. Included here are a John Hartford song as well as two Jerry Garcia tunes and a Doc Watson song as well. All done with great care and love. This recording is a must own.

The Travelin' McCourys can play any song that just sounds better because they play it. Each and every one of these guys is extraordinarily accomplished on their chosen instrument(s), and they put it together in a way that ends up with pure magical music. Usually when you buy a CD or other collected set of an artist's music, there is a song or two that you skip because it just doesn't live up to the rest - not the case with this record; each and every song is something you want to listen to. It's a gem! If you have the chance to see them live, do not miss it - they are even better live than on record.

I saw The Travelin' McCourys in concert 2 years ago and have been waiting eagerly for them to put out an album. I read last week that their album had been released and immediately ordered it from Amazon. It's even better than I expected. I like everything about the album; the song selection, the arrangements, the vocals, the musicianship. Around half the songs were written or co-written by members of the band; that's always a plus to me. This album was worth waiting for.

Have been away for three days listening to nothing but this album, and it has become my all-time favourite bluegrass album. HERE'S WHY.
1 The lyrics have a modern sensibility that remains true to bluegrass traditions but incorporates ideas beyond what might ordinarily be found in bluegrass twenty years ago. The likes of Greensky have had an influence and the songs are all the better for it.
2 The lead vocals are shared across the album which creates a good variety. Ronnie has moments where he sounds like Del, but without the same power in his voice and so they wisely support him with effective harmonies - and each time the songs go up a notch.
3 The musicianship is second to none. There have been moments where I consciously thought I was listening the greatest group of players in the world - just outstanding. Ronnie's playing in particular stood out (but then my ears are trained to listen for mandolins).
4 The album is over an hour long and there isn't a single track that feels like filler. Each time I came to the end I couldn't face listening to anything else.
It is very reassuring to know that when Del eventually decides to take a rest, the band can create music as good as this. If you haven't heard it yet you owe yourself a favour. The IBMA must be rethinking their choices.
