Marijuana Harvest: How to Maximize Quality and Yield in Your Cannabis Garden Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 424 ratings

Marijuana Harvest is the first book devoted entirely to cannabis harvesting. In it, Ed Rosenthal and David Downs explain how to ensure the perfect harvest—everything from recognizing when it’s time to pick, to storage techniques to keep your buds fresh.

Marijuana Harvest is the most important cultivation tool of the season. Readers will learn:

  • Flushing: How and when to flush

  • Ripening: The best time to pick

  • Manicuring and processing: How to speed it up with new tools for both hand and machine trimming

  • Drying and curing: How to avoid mildew and mold contamination

  • Storing: How to keep your buds fresh and potent

Whether you are a hobby gardener or commercial farmer,
Marijuana Harvest shows you how to maximize the yield and quality of your garden, identify problems and avoid costly mistakes. The book’s stunning, full-color photographs and illustrations make it an attractive guide to the steps needed to harvest, dry, trim, cure and store top-quality buds.

Internationally recognized as the number one cultivation author, Ed Rosenthal, along with renowned journalist David Downs, thoroughly researched this book, visiting personal gardens and commercial farms to observe techniques used as well as experimental methods under development. Winners of prestigious cannabis cups are interviewed and share their tips and advice. Content includes time-, labor-, and energy-saving tools and equipment: trimmers, climate controls, drying methods, storage systems, workflow charts and much more—everything a grower needs to know to do it right.

Cut through the clutter of online forums and anecdotal advice to find out how to grow and harvest top-shelf buds, both indoors and out, for use as dried flowers, extracts and edibles. For the casual consumer there are tips on how to choose the best-grown and best-tasting buds available.
Marijuana Harvest is an accessible and informative look at harvest methods for all marijuana users and growers.

Today, more Americans than ever before have the ability to grow and cultivate marijuana for medical and personal use. As of 2020, 33 states plus Washington, D.C., have laws permitting medical cannabis use, and adult use has been legalized in 11 states and in Washington, D.C.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Marijuana Harvest, co-authored by San Francisco Chronicle Cannabis Editor and former Cannabis Now Senior Editor David Downs, is the latest offering in a long legacy of cultivation books released by Rosenthal. And although the ‘guru of ganja’ has been publicly pushing for homegrown backyard cannabis since the late ’70s, Marijuana Harvest arrives at an optimal time when more Americans than ever before have the ability to grow and cultivate marijuana for medical and personal use. The book offers techniques designed to increase the quality and yield of homegrown flowers and pulls from years of research, controlled experiments and interviews with cannabis cultivators on what has worked so far. Marijuana Harvest is designed to teach marijuana growers of all scales how to avoid making costly mistakes, identify problems and solve them quickly and is full of options to jump in on the fun of developing the science around the world’s favorite flower with further personal innovation.”
—Ellen Holland, Cannabis Now Magazine

“The information given could well save an inexperienced gardener more than the purchase price of the book in a single harvest, and it makes some points of value for even a seasoned grower.”
—Grubbycup, Hydrolife Magazine

“Anyone with any clout in the cannabis industry recognizes the name, Ed Rosenthal. Now, right in time for harvest season, Ed brings us a new book explaining exactly how the best farmers do it. In
Marijuana Harvest, Rosenthal once again collaborates with David Downs, Cannabis Editor for the San Francisco Chronicle. From the ins-and-outs of chopping down stalks to the extraction methods many growers use, the authors cover the entire spectrum of what happens to cannabis flowers once they are fully developed. Marijuana Harvest is a delightful read—equally informative as it is visually pleasing. We definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in cannabis cultivation. Getting the most out of our bud doesn’t stop with the growth cycle. Flowers must be treated with care until the moment they are sold over the counter. Thankfully, Rosenthal and Downs have made this book available just in time to show us how important harvest can be.”
—Cara Wietstock, Terpenes and Testing Magazine

"Ed Rosenthal holds the distinction of turning more people on to pot than Cheech and Chong." -- Tommy Chong

"Mr. Rosenthal is the pothead's answer to Ann Landers, Judge Judy, Martha Stewart and the Burpee Garden Wizard all in one." --NY Times January 2003

Ed Rosenthal is the world’s leading expert on the cultivation of marijuana. His books have sold well over a million copies and his most recent edition of “Marijuana Grower’s Handbook” has revolutionized the field. Ed is also on the faculty of Oaksterdam University, the leading trade school for the cannabis industry. His classes teach pupils how different techniques can be used to improve the yield and efficiency of their gardens.

Ed has always been driven by a desire to develop innovative, effective, and non-toxic methods of gardening. He was one of the original American writers to travel to Holland, bringing the knowledge and sophistication of European horticulture to the U.S. through his books and Ask Ed column. While his career has focused on marijuana cultivation, he is an avid gardener of edible plants and flowers as well. Ultimately, Ed believes that no matter the plant, a gardener should never be forced to resort to using potentially dangerous means in order to enjoy a bountiful harvest.

Beyond the garden, Ed views marijuana law as a crucial social issue and has been active in promoting and developing policies of civil regulation. In 2003 he was tried in Federal Court for cultivation in a trial where the jury was not allowed to hear that he was deputized by the City of Oakland to provide marijuana for patients. His trial shifted public opinion in favor of state medical marijuana laws.

His best-selling titles include; The Big Book of Buds series, Marijuana Garden Saver, Best of Ask Ed, and Marijuana Grower's Handbook, among others.

No matter what, I just listen to this guy now. I've read lots of internet posts and alike but when I got to Ed's book, then everything started to make sense; the growing urban myths were debunked with science. I've read the Grower's handbook and I am in the middle of this one, the handbook is better but this is also cool with lots of high quality pictures and material. Stop following tips and tricks you read at internet forums, there is real science behind everything and this guys backup his saying with scientific facts and articles.

This book lays out a simple and intermediate knowledge of growing cannabis. This book and the “true organics” are two books I recommend to read before getting into growing. There’s a lot of information that would have been useful if I knew it when I started. If you want to check out my setup check out out @starlightgenetics on IG

I’m glad I ordered this book. I’m not ready to cut yet but it has me thinking about the steps needed to dry and cure buds successfully. There are also pre-harvest tips. I’m starting to use the flushing ones now. The chapters on trimming equipment show what a wide choice there is with all the new machines that are available. In some sections the book provides more technical information than I need. There are also beautiful photos.

This book is very detailed and useful. Every aspect of harvesting and processing are covered. The book is great on specifics for light, humidity and timing. It also explains the rationale for automating the processes involved. Controversial aspects, like flushing and water curing, are presented from both sides. I am certain that everyone, from first time to large scale commercial growers, will find something here.
