Editorial Reviews

2018 release. Peter Rowan was just a young bluegrass boy when he caught the attention of Bill Monroe, who made him an actual Blue Grass Boy in 1963, or maybe '64. Rowan isn't certain exactly when he became the band's guitarist and lead singer, but the moment Monroe introduced him to fellow icon Carter Stanley is etched in his memory just as indelibly as the inked entry in his 1966 diary. Within a few months, Stanley would be gone, but the impact he and his brother, Ralph, had on Rowan - and the world - would grow even stronger. He acknowledges their influence, and finally gives the story of that meeting a definitive telling, with his debut Rebel Records release, Carter Stanley's Eyes. Rowan, who produced, gathered several luminaries to join him on the journey: lead guitarist Jack Lawrence, of Doc Watson's band; mandolinist/vocalist Don Rigsby, whose 2010 album, Doctor's Orders: A Tribute to Ralph Stanley, features Stanley and alums of his Clinch Mountain Boys; guitarist/vocalist Tim O'Brien (Bluegrass Dukes, Hot Rize); percussionist Jamie Oldaker (Eric Clapton); and banjoist/guitarist/vocalist Patrick Sauber (seen in the film A Mighty Wind). They're joined by Rowan's Bluegrass Band mates: Blaine Sprouse on fiddle and vocals, Chris Henry on mandolin and vocals and Paul Knight on acoustic bass. Together, they do indeed honor their forebears, staying faithful to tradition instead of going for what Rowan calls the "razzle-dazzle"of progressive bluegrass or jamgrass. "To me, the importance of the music is in the songs," he says. "It's about the poetic material. Bluegrass is part of a literary tradition, a poetic tradition."

Peter Rowan is in a curious place in bluegrass. He is a living legend, who has done some of the best work in the history of the genre, both as traditional and progressive music. He has gone back through the history of the form, he has pushed it forward, he is just Peter Rowan, with as iconic a voice as anyone. He is also just an unstoppable force, who can do nothing but let the music flow. That does not mean, if one is honest, that everything he records in his modern days, will stack up to, say, his works with the forefathers, or with Clarence White in Muleskinner, or his most progressive music decades latter. He just knows nothing other than to sing and play because he is the embodiment of the form. Here, then, is Peter in full, traditionalist form with some game accompanists like Jack Lawrence, Tim O’Brien, Blaine Sprouse, and basically, the probability of a bad album was zero. The probability of a Muleskinner album was low too, as Peter is just settling into the comfort of Bill, Ralph and Carter, and the history of the form, but that can be enough. One of the things to understand about Peter Rowan’s later period albums is that they are defined, in some ways, by the interaction of the accompanists, and the support they give to Rowan. Legacy, for example, created the kind of interactive rotating cast that elevated it. This one is more of a front porch picking album, which is comfort music both to Peter and the audience of traditional bluegrass fans. Nothing wrong here, and few Rowan fans can complain, but his best? Honestly, few will rank Carter Stanley’s Eyes as Rowan’s best given everything he has done in his storied career.

A great set of songs from one of the true pioneers in American music. From his bluegrass days to his recordings with Jerry Garcia and now back to the basics. Peter Rowan is an American Treasure.
