The Basics of Cancer Immunotherapy 1st ed. 2018 Edition, Kindle Edition
This book provides patients and their physicians (especially “non-oncologist” health care providers) with a clear and concise introduction to cancer immunotherapy, which, unlike traditional forms of cancer therapy, acts by boosting the patient’s own immune system to fight cancer. The unique features of cancer immunotherapy make its management, monitoring and side-effects different from those of traditional cancer therapy. Especially novel are the side effects of cancer immunotherapy, necessitating greater awareness for both patients and physicians in order to minimize complications of therapy.
The patient-friendly, concise, easy-to-understand, and up-to-date knowledge presented in this book will inform patients about the benefits and risks of cancer immunotherapy, and help them and their care providers to understand how immunotherapy would control their unique disease. Researchers and academic professionals in the field of cancer immunotherapy will also find clear and usefulinformation to help them communicate with patients or address unresolved problems. Some key features of the book are:Expertise. All editors and authors are scientists and oncologists specializing in cancer immunotherapy, and are involved in scientific discovery from the early stage of immune-checkpoint inhibitors to today’s daily patient care. Their insights, expertise and experience guarantee the high quality and authority in the science, medicine and practice of cancer immunotherapy.
Patient-friendly. This book is written for cancer patients in order to meet their needs when considering immunotherapy. As an educational tool, this book will help the reader balance the risks and benefits based on both science and clinical facts, and therefore to make the best choice in receiving or withdrawing from immunotherapy.
Disease Specificity. Cancer is a complicated disease involving multiple stages and pathology. Its response to immunotherapy is individualized and varies depending on cancer types. The authors’ expertise in treating different types of cancers, including melanoma, lung, kidney, bladder, and lymphoma, provides disease-specific insights in applying immunotherapy to each disease.

"[One of] the 7 Most Anticipated Cookbooks of Fall 2017."
--Publishers Weekly
"Spills and stains are to be expected on this lushly photographed compendium of New England(-ish) food, its pages shot through with clever ideas absorbed during [Jennings's] culinary coming-of-age by way of Italy and California."
--Food & Wine
"Never has there been a better time for New England cuisine, and anyone who's dined at the award-winning Townsman in Boston knows that Jennings is to thank. [Homegrown shows you how to] recreate his twists on centuries-old classics by using seaweed to boost the brininess of clam chowder or adding Yankee flair to carbonara via razor clams and salt pork."
--Tasting Table
"This book echoes the simplicity and delight of mealtime with Matt's wife and their boys rather than the foods that require a restaurant kitchen and larder. Homegrown will make your kitchen a better place to cook in and a better place to eat in and will supply you with a lifetime of great recipes that your family will love."
--Andrew Zimmern, from the foreword
"Matt's book tells us a compelling personal story about the place that defines him. His respect for these ingredients and his delicious recipes will forever transform your understanding of New England flavors."
--Sean Brock, chef and author, Heritage
"I've always known Matt Jennings to have a contagious pride for northeastern cuisine, and it's delightful to see how he shares that with the world of both home and professional cooks here in Homegrown. Matt's simple, approachable, and delicious recipes drive me right to the store and back to the kitchen to sate my appetite for Yankee cooking with a serious reboot. Matt finds the perfect balance between honoring the region's influential landscape and rich history while also providing a fresh twist on classic New England dishes, including influences from his wide travels and infinite repertoire. This book makes me crazy with hunger for a visit to Matt's table in Beantown."
--Mario Batali, chef, author, philanthropist
"The recipes Matt gives us in Homegrown honor not only the food of his heritage but also the food of his heart. As a dad, Matt realizes that what we cook at home must be both simple to make and worth the effort. These dishes will soon become favorites in your house, too."
--Tyler Florence, chef, author, restaurateur
"A great debut for Matt Jennings! His New England background and his love for food make this a great read as well as an amazing reference for anyone looking to amp up their kitchens. The recipes are simple enough for a home cook to follow with professional results."
--April Bloomfield, chef and author, A Girl and Her Pig and A Girl and Her Greens
"With a title like Homegrown, who could resist? This book is an inspired compilation of the food Matt Jennings has grown up with. From his soul to your table, these dishes will take you right to New England and all the delectable seasonal provisions it offers."
--Daniel Boulud, chef/owner, The Dinex Group
"This is new, quintessential New England cuisine brought to you in a book full of insight and delicious, smart food."
--David McMillan, chef and author, The Art of Living According to Joe Beef

If you do have a strong background in science, you may find The Basics of Cancer Immunotherapy
lacking in detail and leaving you with many questions that you can easily pursue using the extensive references. Overall this slim volume is well written and very much worth reading. I do hope the authors keep it up to date with future editions. It is a rapidly changing field with great promise.
The follow-on clinical chapters are competent, but in a "basics of..." book, they seem very much out of place, since they leap from the fairly brief, general overview into niche discussions of specific areas. These include the treatment of melanoma, lung and genitourinary cancer, lymphoma, "combination" therapy (immunotherapy as part of multi-part treatment strategies), and a potpourri chapter that touches on almost every clinical area. And these chapters seem aimed at clinicians, not the lay reader.
The book has the feel of one written by committee, not by a single author who might have given it the integration and continuity that the book aspires to (presenting the true "basic concepts and tools" of immunotherapy, applied to cancer). The price is right--this is far less expensive than others in the growing list of books on the topic--but my impression is that Springer, the publisher, should have exerted more editorial direction in its production.
My suggestion for the "newby" would be to start with a book that is true to the basics designation (here, a modest but still comprehensive and very readable volume is "A Beginner's Guide to Targeted Treatments" from Wiley; for physicians, there are now many current offerings that either address true basics of the science, or provide sub-area treatments of immunotherapeutic approaches.
