The Basics of Cancer Immunotherapy 1st ed. 2018 Edition, Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

This book provides patients and their physicians (especially “non-oncologist” health care providers) with a clear and concise introduction to cancer immunotherapy, which, unlike traditional forms of cancer therapy, acts by boosting the patient’s own immune system to fight cancer. The unique features of cancer immunotherapy make its management, monitoring and side-effects different from those of traditional cancer therapy. Especially novel are the side effects of cancer immunotherapy, necessitating greater awareness for both patients and physicians in order to minimize complications of therapy.

The patient-friendly, concise, easy-to-understand, and up-to-date knowledge presented in this book will inform patients about the benefits and risks of cancer immunotherapy, and help them and their care providers to understand how immunotherapy would control their unique disease.   Researchers and academic professionals in the field of cancer immunotherapy will also find clear and usefulinformation to help them communicate with patients or address unresolved problems.  Some key features of the book are:

Expertise. All editors and authors are scientists and oncologists specializing in cancer immunotherapy, and are involved in scientific discovery from the early stage of immune-checkpoint inhibitors to today’s daily patient care. Their insights, expertise and experience guarantee the high quality and authority in the science, medicine and practice of cancer immunotherapy.

Patient-friendly. This book is written for cancer patients in order to meet their needs when considering immunotherapy. As an educational tool, this book will help the reader balance the risks and benefits based on both science and clinical facts, and therefore to make the best choice in receiving or withdrawing from immunotherapy.

Disease Specificity. Cancer is a complicated disease involving multiple stages and pathology. Its response to immunotherapy is individualized and varies depending on cancer types. The authors’ expertise in treating different types of cancers, including melanoma, lung, kidney,  bladder, and lymphoma, provides disease-specific insights in applying immunotherapy to each disease.

I read this book after I already finished the recently-published Butterfield et al. book on immunotherapy. I realize now I did it backwards---I should have read this book first before tackling the Butterfield tome. This book is much less detailed than the Butterfield book, but provides a very helpful foundational overview and fills in many of the basic gaps in my knowledge that I didn't even realize were there after reading Butterfield. For someone well-versed in this subject, this book is going to be much too basic. For someone just learning about immunotherapy, however, I think this book strikes a good balance---it provides enough detail so that it doesn't insult your intelligence but not so much detail as to be overwhelming.

If you have no knowledge of cell biology and immunology you may find the reading dense. If so, first read the excellent text, How the Immune System Works by Lauren M. Sompayrac.
If you do have a strong background in science, you may find The Basics of Cancer Immunotherapy
lacking in detail and leaving you with many questions that you can easily pursue using the extensive references. Overall this slim volume is well written and very much worth reading. I do hope the authors keep it up to date with future editions. It is a rapidly changing field with great promise.

Immunotherapy is red-hot in cancer treatment these days--and there are a number of books that deal comprehensively with the topic. This book isn't one of them. It's a scattered contribution to the basic science and clinical details of the topic--with a short introductory chapter that seems aimed at the lay reader, and a second chapter that covers the essential topic in less than 20 pages--followed by disease-specific discussions (written by Mayo Clinic docs). In an area that demands illustration, there are few drawings, schematic representations, or other visual elements that would help readers to "get it" through modes other than text.

The follow-on clinical chapters are competent, but in a "basics of..." book, they seem very much out of place, since they leap from the fairly brief, general overview into niche discussions of specific areas. These include the treatment of melanoma, lung and genitourinary cancer, lymphoma, "combination" therapy (immunotherapy as part of multi-part treatment strategies), and a potpourri chapter that touches on almost every clinical area. And these chapters seem aimed at clinicians, not the lay reader.

The book has the feel of one written by committee, not by a single author who might have given it the integration and continuity that the book aspires to (presenting the true "basic concepts and tools" of immunotherapy, applied to cancer). The price is right--this is far less expensive than others in the growing list of books on the topic--but my impression is that Springer, the publisher, should have exerted more editorial direction in its production.

My suggestion for the "newby" would be to start with a book that is true to the basics designation (here, a modest but still comprehensive and very readable volume is "A Beginner's Guide to Targeted Treatments" from Wiley; for physicians, there are now many current offerings that either address true basics of the science, or provide sub-area treatments of immunotherapeutic approaches.
