Product Description
Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan star in The Foreigner, a timely action thriller from the director of "Casino Royale" and "Goldeneye." Chan stars as humble London businessman Quan, whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love -- his teenage daughter -- is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat- and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Pierce Brosnan), whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2025I am not a huge fan of "action" movies. But I am a huge fan of Jackie Chan, and becoming one of Katie Leung. I don't know how I never saw this movie before!! But am glad I rented it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2018I was looking for a Jackie Chan movie to pass the evening with. I have always enjoyed his martial arts techniques, the amazing stunts and the simple, fun plots. I found one movie that seemed to fit the bill but the dialogue was dubbed and it seemed to simple for me. It must have been one the very earliest. So I skipped on to another one on the list: Foreigner. Even though I don't like Pierce Brosnan I like Chan enough to compensate.
First thing that struck me about this movie was Jackie Chan has become OLD. !
He is over 60 - not as old as me, but - old enough to be slower and not able to perform all the artful stunts and masterful, daring escapades he was famous for.
Second thing that struck me was that terrorists kill innocent people, including women and children and here they were doing it with absolute disregard for the common people who are not involved in their agenda, legitimate though that agenda might be.
The suffering they portrayed got to me. Jackie was in a serious drama and I thought he carried it off very well. I believed in the character he portrayed: a doting father who was too old to get with modern culture of the young in England and so protective of his daughter whom he felt compelled to shelter from harm at all costs.
Brosnan played his part well: that of an old, ex-IRA killer who now made a career of protecting his beloved Irish people from the horrors of murder, bombings. betrayals that he had be a part of in the past, I hurt when Jackie lost her and lost his will to go on living, the feeling that life made no sense anymore.
Old and burnt=out and just wishing life we could have some peace.
When Jackie had to get into it with professional killers, hand-to-hand fighting and face-to-face shooting he acquitted himself well - as well as an old man with all those years of martial arts training and discipline could. I found the fight scenes believable, not cartoonish like so many modern action films.
He tolerated the pains and dealt with the wounds as he was trained to do.
I replayed some of the scenes more than once to get the buildup to the action and to try to understand how it was that Jackie was from China and had been a killer for the Viet Cong in Vietnam, just before and during the time I was there in the Marine Corps. I knew guys like him over there who left the communist side to join with the U.S. armed forces. Fortunately he got out. Unfortunately he lost most of his family to pirates and storms at sea and he did not ever get over it. I never got over Viet Nam either. And I did not lose as much as he did.
I could feel Jackie's pain - the pain of a strong man who does his best and still fails - fails to protect those he loves and has to live with those memories and is so hardened that he could even blow up more people, so disciplined he could go on with his chosen mission to bring justice, get revenge, on the people who killed the only child he had left.
And at the end, when the dust settles and bleeding stops there is a woman. The plane Chinese woman who has been there all this time, waiting and worrying and devoted to him. And then just maybe there is reason to go on living - in her arms.
Yes, this movie got to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2025I'll usually sit through a well-acted action movie at least once. This one had just enough plot-twists that you had to pay attention and the acting is solid. The weakness of the movie is that there is little to endear either of the main actors other than action, so about 2/3 of the way through the primary emotion is one of watching a tight horse-race. . The underlying Ireland scenario may not be well known to many outside Europe/UK; however, enough is "explained" to make it less than a total mystery... reasonably good flic...

- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2021I had heard and read about this movie but still had my doubts. There were only two fight sequences that were stereotypical Jackie Chan (remember he was a gymnast turned actor and he likes to be funny, can't blame him for that, it has served him well). Instead he starts out as a geriatric mourner and he does really well in that role. He is actually very vulnerable. He can be winged and barely escape one encounter in the woods. There were plenty of opportunities for it to get campy funny and yet Chan held back.
Of course he wants vengeance for his daughter's murder (once again who would blame him for that), it is only when he gets to Northern Ireland and confronts Pierce Brosnan's spot on Gerry Adams cloned character (Brosnan actually turns in a great performance) that Mr. Qan is more than a sixty-year old "China man" who owns a Chinese restaurant who has been wronged. The writers did a real good job of writing complex characters who are hiding their own secrets from everybody (of course the viewer gets let in on those secrets before they are known to the other characters and that is great writing, more writers need to understand that concept rather than hanging on to their rabbits in their hats to pull out a solution in the end).
I also appreciated that the London scenes were shot in London and the Northern Ireland scenes were shot in Northern Ireland and they didn't over saturate or brighten up the colors. They let the scenery be the scenery and the actors perform the roles. Even in the ultimate final revenge encounter Chan's character doesn't go overboard into Jackie Chan style. The actor who played Commander Bromley needs to get roles with a higher profile as he did an excellent job in all of his scenes.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018Jackie Chan fans expecting for his comeback since his Rush Hour days might be a little disappointed in this film. In fact, I'm not even sure that he's in this film more than half its running time. However, when he is, Chan is quite good, whether he's acting or fighting. Still, this did not ruin my enjoyment of the film. It's very well directed with strong, central performances. Pierce Brosnan is the standout, spitting out fiery lines with an Irish accent and displaying a sort of menace that I've never seen of him in past films. This is more of a dramatic film with some action sprinkled here and there. It's also very wordy with a lot of exposition, though I found the plot to be interesting enough to hold my attention. My major gripe, of course, is with Chan playing the titular character, "The Foreigner," he's not really in this film enough. I wanted more scenes with him and to know why he was so driven to avenge his daughter's death that he was willing to give up his life and possibly die. Still, I liked this film and recommend it to any Jackie Chan fan. Though I didn't enjoy his lack of screen time, I still found enjoyment nontheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film only the USA issued one has English subtitles you need a multi region player for Region 1
I bought this film some years ago but it only had Italian subtitles. I wanted one with English subtitles and this one, bought from the USA, has them. I was annoyed it was not available for years as seen as too political for English audiences. Jackie Chan at his best, well worth a watch. You need a multi region player to view region 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabuleux !
