Product Description
Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan star in The Foreigner, a timely action thriller from the director of "Casino Royale" and "Goldeneye." Chan stars as humble London businessman Quan, whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love -- his teenage daughter -- is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat- and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Pierce Brosnan), whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2018The originals Bronson & Eastwood started this plotline of violence toward their loved ones. Even Liam Nelson was able to generate an audience towards his movies using plotline.
Whether or not like Chang and/or Brosnan there was a different twist. There were some turns that in hindsight
could see coming in the earlier part, but it was played well as an ensemble piece not focused on these 2 big stars. Which totally surprised me. That's where Clintwood, Bronson & Nelson would have been upfront & focused.
The action felt realistic & kept more subdued than in your face surreal. I totally thank both the stunt director & cameraman for not using the 'new' way of filming action fights. It can be jarring & hard to watch as well as difficult keep track of the actual fight. I'm sick of fast forwarding to find out who wins & who's killed/maimed/injured because of the jarring camera angles.
I like how he didn't try to use his past to gain influence telling the police he was a famous military fighter. Interestingly the police, the IRA Pierce Brosnan's character, nor his security team ever thought to think he was dangerous. That in itself made the film realistic full of the stereotypes & assumptions. He didn't say too much in the movie, but Pierce did a lot of talking which was conflicting at times. At a certain point there needed to be more police presence but it wasn't absolutely necessary but would have helped in keeping track of time.
I also liked that neither him or the security fraction did any killings of civilians. They could have but didn't. Although both he & the security fraction had killed they didn't do it to animals, landladies, Chinese restaurant staff, nor others.
Negatives:
Chang's character had no 'resources'/'allies'
Nothing whatsoever from the US whether they'd retired, deceased or not, he should have been able to find out intel on Pierce Brosnan's character and, information straight from the get go surrounding IRA terrorist intel. It was hard for me to accept him being completely clueless regarding info being collected, or about bombings in general in London. They've occurred multiple times so it's not a 'new' situation.
Meetings
The meeting was so weird that Brosnan's character had. It should never have been done in that. It was clearly a visible well known area with big windows. It was an official building that could have surveillance drones & other types such as mics & cameras. It should not have been official nor recognized. Why? Hindsight reckoning that also could have been a way anyone could have known about anything.
Relationships with wife/daughter
His wife obediently did what he asked of her but was resentful. That was problematic, she should never have gone anywhere then we could have seen the arguments. She didn't spy on him. We never saw their daughter that should have been a sensitive issue since he was concerned about her safety but she wasn't anywhere around by phone or coming/going. Why didn't we see her? Angry at both of them or resistant to get involved? It would have been interesting for Chang to watch her possibly bringing up the last few minutes he spent with his daughter.
Relationship with mistress
Another one of my peeves when have more than 5 characters is when characters look very similar. Our first scene with the mistress is when in bed. I had problems telling her apart from the wife! If they had changed the hair color, hairstyle even show she had wore a wig I would have been able to tell her apart. It wasn't until after her sleeping with the journalist did I recognize her. If she was involved, why not see how she hated him and was only a means to an end?
Listening in
If someone is in my house shouldn't they be able to hear a guest talk? Wouldn't that person want to hear the conversation especially since many weren't aware of where the one character was?
That was my biggest peeve of not knowing who could hear & when (security? Chang? Wife? British anti-terrorism unit?). It was proven they had watched all the 'suspects' using drones & surveillance, why did none of them think it couldn't be done?
The mule
It would have worked better if we had known why he was targeted. We learned at the opportune time, but not prior to why he was targeted by this femme fatale.
Nephew
Why was he so naive? He spent years in the military but gets seduced by his aunt not really connected to him. How? Did she write/email him? He was too wooden a character, no explanation or backstory. At first thought was dead in-law's son, that would have been incest. He's a relative but doesn't mention it to Chang. Why?
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2018I was looking for a Jackie Chan movie to pass the evening with. I have always enjoyed his martial arts techniques, the amazing stunts and the simple, fun plots. I found one movie that seemed to fit the bill but the dialogue was dubbed and it seemed to simple for me. It must have been one the very earliest. So I skipped on to another one on the list: Foreigner. Even though I don't like Pierce Brosnan I like Chan enough to compensate.
First thing that struck me about this movie was Jackie Chan has become OLD. !
He is over 60 - not as old as me, but - old enough to be slower and not able to perform all the artful stunts and masterful, daring escapades he was famous for.
Second thing that struck me was that terrorists kill innocent people, including women and children and here they were doing it with absolute disregard for the common people who are not involved in their agenda, legitimate though that agenda might be.
The suffering they portrayed got to me. Jackie was in a serious drama and I thought he carried it off very well. I believed in the character he portrayed: a doting father who was too old to get with modern culture of the young in England and so protective of his daughter whom he felt compelled to shelter from harm at all costs.
Brosnan played his part well: that of an old, ex-IRA killer who now made a career of protecting his beloved Irish people from the horrors of murder, bombings. betrayals that he had be a part of in the past, I hurt when Jackie lost her and lost his will to go on living, the feeling that life made no sense anymore.
Old and burnt=out and just wishing life we could have some peace.
When Jackie had to get into it with professional killers, hand-to-hand fighting and face-to-face shooting he acquitted himself well - as well as an old man with all those years of martial arts training and discipline could. I found the fight scenes believable, not cartoonish like so many modern action films.
He tolerated the pains and dealt with the wounds as he was trained to do.
I replayed some of the scenes more than once to get the buildup to the action and to try to understand how it was that Jackie was from China and had been a killer for the Viet Cong in Vietnam, just before and during the time I was there in the Marine Corps. I knew guys like him over there who left the communist side to join with the U.S. armed forces. Fortunately he got out. Unfortunately he lost most of his family to pirates and storms at sea and he did not ever get over it. I never got over Viet Nam either. And I did not lose as much as he did.
I could feel Jackie's pain - the pain of a strong man who does his best and still fails - fails to protect those he loves and has to live with those memories and is so hardened that he could even blow up more people, so disciplined he could go on with his chosen mission to bring justice, get revenge, on the people who killed the only child he had left.
And at the end, when the dust settles and bleeding stops there is a woman. The plane Chinese woman who has been there all this time, waiting and worrying and devoted to him. And then just maybe there is reason to go on living - in her arms.
Yes, this movie got to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film only the USA issued one has English subtitles you need a multi region player for Region 1
I bought this film some years ago but it only had Italian subtitles. I wanted one with English subtitles and this one, bought from the USA, has them. I was annoyed it was not available for years as seen as too political for English audiences. Jackie Chan at his best, well worth a watch. You need a multi region player to view region 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabuleux !
