Great value, but with a few caveats

Great value, but with a few caveats
I bought the 8 pack of these to use as grow lights. The set of eight was the cheapest per lumen I could find from a product with good reviews (17600 lumen for $50).ConstructionEach tube has a translucent cover with a square profile, most likely made of styrene. For my purposes I need max light output, so I removed them. They remove and snap back in easily so it won't be a issue to experiment with what option you like best. The "thick alu" is roughly 0.3mm standard aluminum extrusion. They are extremely lightweight and do flex quite a bit, but this should not be a problem as these are not designed to be portable fixtures. The kit included a lot of accessories (see picture). There are 19 brackets, 18 screws, 8 socket covers, and 8 extenders. These extenders function the same as the "connecting cords" except they allow bars to be connected end-to-end without any visible wires. As stated in product description, there are also 6 connecting cords (20") and 4 switched wall plugs (5'), both about 20AWG. This is on the thin side, but is fine for the small amount of current these draw. A note was included with the lights that cautions not to daisy-chain more than 6 lights--this keeps current within recommended ratings for 20AWG wire (<1.5A). The same gauge wire is used internally to bridge the power connectors. Note that the plugs are non-polarized and do not have a ground wire (despite the ground pin on the bars themselves). If these get submerged in water there is the potential for issue, but it is unlikely due to the relatively well-sealed tube.People have been complaining that the brackets are not strong enough, but I don't see the issue. Yes, they are thin and bendy, but the light bars are so light that the strength is sufficient. Once these are installed, they should hold the bars perfectly well with no fuss. If they do end up falling out, the brackets can be bent in slightly to better grip the bar.ElectronicsEach bar has a slightly flexible PCB that houses the LEDs and is held securely in a slot in the extrusion. This is NOT coated, so with plastic cover removed, the lights are no longer water-resistant. There are 96 LEDs per bar, and they are 2835 SMD type. These run at approximately 3.1V, and draw about 0.2A each. I don't have a light-meter to test the actual output, but the 2200 lumens stated in the product description are consistent with the specs for this type of LED. I would guess this is close to the actual output of the product. It is important to note that the "T5" moniker is more for size than flux. It is on par with a standard T5 tube, but it is less than half that of a T5HO. T5HO is commonly used in high-bay and grow light fixtures so be careful when doing comparisons with dedicated products. There is no noticeable flicker, and the light output is a nice cool white. 6500K is noticeably bluer than daylight (~5000K), so keep this in mind when picking the color temperature. For plants in the veg cycle, this is perfect. Each light bar contains its own DC power supply. This is wrapped in plastic and insulated from the aluminum tube, so there is not much to worry about. It gets warm, but not hot. The PSU is high-frequency enough to eliminate visible flicker, but this does cause problems with interference. There is a good amount of RF noise emitted by the power supply, detectable on an AM radio and with oscilloscope. I didn't notice any issues with other electronics plugged in nearby, so any interference could likely be mitigated by moving othre RF appliances a few feet away.Wrap UpThese lights fantastic to grow some plants or brighten a workspace. They're quick to set up and very cheap. For the price, the build quality is perfectly adequate. I would absolutely buy again.

      Pros:

      - Very bright
      - Nice color output
      - Low power consumption
      - Simple installation
      - Exhibited few of the negative attributes I read about in other reviews
      - Packed extremely well
      - Supplied with plenty of cables and mounting hardware

      Cons:

      - Delicate construction
      - Some connectors difficult to insert

I must begin by saying that I have received no compensation, either by discounted/free product, or monetary consideration in exchange for this honest and fair review.

I read a lot of reviews of this product before I decided to go ahead and purchase the LED strips, and I was concerned by several negative things I read in regards to this product - mainly cheap build quality, shipping damage, plastic wrap that couldn't be easily removed, lights "burning down" (I kid you not) prematurely, poor fitting brackets, faulty assembly, RFI noise high enough to prevent radio reception and interfere with garage door opener operation and most troubling, lack of response from the seller in regards to requests for service / problem resolution. I ultimately decided to go ahead and try outfitting my shop with them replacing lots of 4' fluorescent fixtures, making sure not to miss the return window in case I had trouble that the seller couldn't or wouldn't help me resolve.

Upon receiving my shipments (the pair of 6-packs came in two separate Amazon boxes, the 8-pack which I ordered a day or so later came in a single box), I unpacked the lights and discovered one broken end-cap on one strip. This was the only damage out of the three shipments I received, but the light strip functioned perfectly, and the damage was insignificant enough that it couldn't be seen after installation. Packaging was excellent, with the lights, brackets, and cable sets tightly packed in thick cardboard tubes which were each placed individually inside an Amazon box for shipment. I don't see how the end cap could have gotten broken during shipment - it must have happened due to lazy/careless handling at some point before shipment. I would have complained had the damage been obvious after installation. I did not have any issue removing the lights from the plastic wrapped around them as some others have noted. As a matter of fact, there was no adhesive of any kind in any of the packing materials I encountered.

Each set of lights came with two spare mounting brackets and screws, and plenty of extra cord sets to hook everything up. The 6-piece sets came with three switched power cords, and the eight piece set came with four switched power cords, and all sets came with enough short and long cables to daisy chain the lights in a variety of configurations. If you want to have each strip on its own switched power cord, be aware that you will have to arrange for additional switched cords, as the sets only come with one switched power cord for every two strips.

I chose to replace the fluorescent tubes in each of my existing fixtures with either two or three LED light strips depending on location, mounting the brackets for the light strips to the metal housing of each 4' fixture by drilling small holes that the supplied bracket screws would thread into. I cut some unswitched cable sets to make a pigtail with three power connectors for each old fluorescent fixture, wiring the hot and neutral wires to short lengths of electrical wire in order to use wire nuts to attach them to the power coming into the fluorescent fixtures. Hooking them up this way made sense in my application as I wouldn't have to run new electrical supply lines, just tie in to the old power lines that previously went to each ballast in the fluorescent fixtures. As a result, I ended up with a bag full of extra switched power cords and unused connecting cables.

When I began assembling the fixtures, I noticed that the cable connections on some of the LED strips were really tight, and you have to hold the connectors at just the right angle to get them to fit into the sockets on the ends of the LED strips. This was expected, as I had read comments to that effect in a lot of reviews, but it was not bothersome enough to deduct a star from my rating. I also noticed why a lot of people complained about the brackets not being a tight enough fit. Fixing that is as simple as squeezing each bracket to tighten it up before screwing it to the mounting surface. Again, not a bother enough to lower my rating. I also noticed how seemingly fragile these light strips are - my only comments regarding the lightweight construction are these:

      - If the LED strips were heavier, they might tend to pull out of the mounting brackets more
      - You have to be somewhat careful in handling the strips in order to not damage them when plugging in the power cables

Once installed, you shouldn't have to worry about how delicate they are if you mount them in a location that is out of harm's way. Once they are installed, there should be no need to handle them again for a long time unless you need to move them or if they don't last as long as most typical LED lighting fixtures do. I have not been using them long enough to be able to speak to their lifespan.

After I finished installation and turned on the lights, I was very happy with the light output. It is much brighter than my old fluorescents, and they all come on with no flicker and there is no need to wait for them to warm up. I did notice however that about half of the strips come on immediately, and the other half come on after about a half second or so. Kind of strange that they don't all come on at the same time, but again, that is so minor that I can't complain about it.

Next, I fired up my radio and was expecting to hear a lot of static with the lights on, but both FM and AM radio stations came in loud and clear, and there is no difference in radio reception with the lights on or off, nor do the strips affect Wi-Fi speed in my shop.

In closing, I am very pleased with my purchases. I have twenty LED strips installed and the only defect I have seen so far is the one broken end cap that you can't even see now that everything is mounted. The light across all of the strips is uniform in both color and brightness, and there is no flicker. I must assume that the manufacturer has taken steps to fix many of the issues I read about such as the RFI interference, different color light output in different orders, some strips not working at all, and others. Having installed twenty LED strips, I feel that if there were going to be short-term quality issues that I would have seen them during installation. If I have issues as the strips age, I will revisit this review and update it as needed.

I highly recommend these LED strips and will purchase more as needed.

10/10/2019 I have been very satisfied with these LED strips and have had zero issues with them since installation. I'd definitely recommend them to anyone needing bright lighting in a shop environment.

TL;DR - Very nice bulbs, prongs on plugs are a little loose but easily fixed. Overall a super addition to any space needing extra light. Get them. ALL of them. BULBS for DAYS! LEDs FOR LIFE!

I got the 8-pack 6500K bulbs, and man do they really add some much needed lighting to my wood shop! I wish I could take pictures, but it's a right mess in there right now - been performing some much needed renovations, with lighting being one of them. I'm planning to order another set of 8 to outfit the opposite side so that I'll have no shadows anywhere at all.

Installation is about as straightforward as can be - just screw the mounting clips onto the ceiling (or the wall, or floor, or whatever surface you want, I suppose), and slip the bulbs into the clips (slip'n'clip. heh.) Doesn't get much easier than that. I mean, I guess you could make it harder if you want, if that floats your boat; personally, I like simple.

Regarding quality and overall feel, the bulbs are incredibly lightweight - then again, that's no surprise since these are thin LED fixtures, so no ballast needed unlike the stupid, old fluorescent tube assemblies I use to have (God rest their souls). The slim profile certainly makes positioning very easy. My only complaint is with the plugs (that go into the wall outlets). Out of the box they are a little loose in my outlets for my liking. I should mention that these outlets are newly installed, so the looseness could be worse on older outlets. Then again, all you really need to do is bend the prongs a little inward, and voila! - Bob's your uncle. Or aunt. I don't discriminate.

So yeah. Overall, with the amount of bulbs; the level of light they provide; and the price point for 8 of them, they fit perfectly into my budget. Once I have the next set of 8 installed (and of course have the shop cleaned up), I'll certainly try to remember to update with pics. I'd definitely recommend these to anyone needing to add some lighting anywhere, be that a shop or garage, or even your bedroom! In fact, I actually might just do that now that I'm thinking about it...yeah, that might be perfect for my Gunpla desk space! The possibilities are endless!
