I remember watching this show when it first aired, and I loved it. Finding it again was a real treat, and the show was just as entertaining sharing it with my kids. While the early 2000's vibe is strong, that was not a detractor for me. Funny and irreverent, the characters are oddly well realized for a comedy show. Other comparable shows would the Middleman, Warehouse 13 and Eureka.
This series is so dorky & cheesy & I love it. There are plenty that are dorky & cheesy that I don't love & can't get into but this is not one of those. It's basically a special unit of the police that deals w/paranormal beings & activity in the area. The writing can be a bit corny & obvious, but in spite of that it is fun, entertaining & for me, very watchable. I saw this series when it was originally on TV & was delighted to see it on DVD. Immediately sat & binge watched the whole thing. You will note some now more famous actors when they were younger & possibly their debuts on TV for some of them. I also really liked Space Precinct when it was out as another show that falls into a slightly more cheesy category only because it also involves a lot of puppetry (or something), but I loved that show too, own it on DVD & binge watch that one as well periodically. BTW on Space Precinct you can see Idris Elba briefly as a space pizza delivery person in one episode. One that stands out on this Special Unit 2 series is Tom Welling (Smallville) making an appearance, but there are many others I can't think of right this second. Also not the largest budget & special effects can be cheesy too. Just the right type of entertainment for me.
Much like Firefly, Special Unit 2 has but 19 episodes. SU2 is a brilliant spoof - the X - Files meets Kolchak the Night Stalker. Agents Nick O'Malley and Kate Benson fight 'links' - the things that go bump in the night - in Chicago, Illinois. Trolls, dragons, Tritons (the male sex of mermaids) werewolves among other things of your childhood nightmares plague Chicago. The regular Chicago PD is not equipped to handle such things, even if the brass believed in such 'nonsense.' Enter Special Unit 2 with special weapons and knowledge of things arcane and supernatural! SciFi fans will love this tragically short - lived show.
In this series every monster is a missing link in the evolutionary ladder, and they all seem to love Chicago. To combat the threat, Chicago PD formed Special Unit 2 to hunt them down and eliminate them. Officer Kate Benson, who has always been seeing things out of the corner of her eye since childhood, gets recruited into the unit when she discovers people are being kidnapped by real-life gargoyles for food and is paired up with trigger-happy Nicholas O'Malley. It's all about mixing together a cast of excellent actors, good scripts, nice effects, and, to top it all off, truly witty dialogue. This is great television, if you can handle detective-horror-comedy as a genre. I had been waiting for this since 2002 to eventually get released onto DVD or Blue Ray. Both seasons are included in the disk set. I really enjoyed rewatching the show. It's has a witty quality similar to scripts by Joss Whedon.
Loved this show when it was broadcasted. Video taped it. Was one of the only reasons I still had a VCR hooked up to my TV. Now it is finally on DVD and I am very pleased with the quality of the presentation. As far as the show itself, it is a little dated in so far as some of its digital special effects. And, yes, some of the scenes where computer displays are used look dated, but, this was not a series set 'in the future' so, as long as you think of it as 1990's, it looks perfectly fine. As for the overall setting, think Men in Black, but dealing with mythic monsters (mummies, gargoyles, etc.), and not aliens. And, if you wonder why not in Blu-Ray? Because this was not filmed in HD in the first place, so, no need to do it in BR.
I tried to find this series for years. It only ran for 1 1/2 seasons and then vanished. I don't think it even got reruns. Which was a shame. If you liked 'Kolchack the Night Stalker', 'Warehouse 13', 'The Librarians', 'Eureka', etc... then this is worth a watch. I have to admit that the character of Carl (actor Danny Woodburn) the gnome steals the show, but the other actors (Landes, Lee, and Gant) do a good job as well. Think cops against supernatural links.
When i saw this i had to get it as it was a short lived Tv series that was funny and covered some old folklore tales , the chracters were great and it was just a great series from the early 2000,s arrived fast and loved to watch again including two episodes i had never seen
Was in mint condition, actually NEW, not used, which is a nice change from getting pre used or pre opened stuff and having to return it. :) What a great show. Sad it didn't last.
