Editorial Reviews

Call Me by Your Name (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Music is vital to director Luca Guadagnino's films, but he normally doesn't hire composers, and instead makes selections from pre-existing music. While the soundtrack for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a compilation of tracks by numerous musicians, Guadagnino decided he wanted to approach American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens to create a song especially for the film. "An artist for whom I have enormous admiration is Sufjan. His voice is fantastic and angelic, and his lyrics are so sharp and deep and full of sorrow and beauty. The music is so haunting. All these elements were the ones I wanted to envision in the film." - The soundtrack for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME also includes tracks by John Adams and Ryuichi Sakamoto as well as pieces written by Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel and Johann Sebastian Bach. As the film is set in the 1980s, Guadagnino chose period Italian pop music (including Giorgio Moroder & Joe Esposito's "Lady Lady Lady") for the radio, but particularly spotlights The Psychedelic Furs' anthem "Love My Way". "I love The Psychedelic Furs," says Guadagnino. "It's kind of autobiographical, because I remember listening to that song when I was seventeen and being completely affected by it. I wanted to pay homage to myself then." - CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman, written by Oscar® nominee James Ivory and starring Armie Hammer (The Social Network) and Timothée Chalamet (Interstellar, Homeland).

This is a beautiful and moving collection of music. Honestly, I don't know how I would feel about it divorced from the movie, which I have seen five times and counting, as well as pre-ordering the video. Thus, hearing the music puts me into the world of the movie. It's arranged chronologically.

There are several pieces of French and Italian pop music from the 1980s that are actually heard only as excerpts on the radio, etc. I was less interested in those than in the classical music included. However.... as I listened to the American pop music, which in the movie seems like just artifacts to establish a time period, I realized how specifically they seem to be chosen to reflect what is happening onscreen. Case in point, Giorgio Moroder's "Lady Lady Lady," which was previously to me just a kind of lame leftover from the Flashdance soundtrack. Paired with Timothée Chalamet's complex silent acting as he watches Armie Hammer on the dance floor, it makes much more of an impact. I would love to know the translation of the foreign language music, presumably also chosen to support the plot.

Beyond that, there are the Sufjian Stevens tracks (three of them). Out of context, again, I think his music is not my cup of tea, but used in the film and consequently a reminder of it, they are quite moving. They also are well-matched to the feeling of the film, which Entertainment Weekly nailed with the adjectives "elegant and aching."

To me the best pieces are the piano-based instrumentals, which are such an integral part of the overall feeling of the film, from the John Adams composition used under the opening credits to the impressionist compositions included, notable by Ravel and Satie. The nature of impressionist music is, of course, ideal for a story where water is such an omnipresent image. The more contemporary music by Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (who has scored a number of films and has won an Oscar) is consistent with the feeling of the older piano music.

So really, you have three distinct categories, the period pop, the melancholia of Stevens and the glittering beauty of the piano pieces. While to someone who has not seen the movie this might lend to a disjointed reaction, in context the music both tells the story and is an aural reminder of the distinct, beautifully-rendered world of the film.

If you love this movie as apparently quite a few people do, then the soundtrack is a welcome souvenir.

One note to the designers of the booklet and cover included in the CD-- they might have acknowledged precisely who and what the movie is about. Inside there is a featured photo of the characters Elio and Marzia embracing, in other words a heterosexual liaison. While the cover features to two male stars, and what appears to be a photo made between takes, as well as others of them in the shot together, there is no indication of the intimate and loving relationship these two characters have-- the entire crux of this movie!

I am so confused as to why it took me so long to even consider purchasing the soundtrack to CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. As many have experienced, this movie truly touched my soul, resonated to every core of my being and is now a special part of me. I own the movie on dvd and blu-ray, have seen it all around in varying forms over 15 times thus far (amazing how each time touches yet another part of you.) This soundtrack is just another dimension to the power of the film. Of course you have the magical songs by Sufjan Stevens but from beginning to end this soundtrack is an experience of itself. In ways it is as if you are reliving the emotions of the movie but for me due to how deeply the movie tapped into my own life and personal experiences each listening is a spiritual experience. The film took place in the 80s and every pop song that may have only been in the film for seconds is here in full and the magical way the classical, pop and original songs all work together seamlessly show you just how carefully the music was chosen for the film. Again, just the same as each time I watch the film is yet another emotional journey so is each time I listen to this soundtrack. It is so rare for a film to touch emotions in such a pure, real and raw way. That is one thing. But when the soundtrack does the same thing it is extraordinary. There are no words as to how much I recommend this soundtrack.

The soundtrack to this wonderful, touching movie is a great addition to the DVD. Not one song is left out. The soundtrack starts from the very beginning and continues until the end. I find the instrumentals very soothing and the songs with vocals very good as well. A must for big fans of the movie.

I never tire of this beautiful soundtrack. It simultaneously conjures up emotions of bygone past while healing me. It reminds me of loves and summers and life, but also of Italy.
One of my favorite films of all time, and my favorite soundtrack of any film.

Unlike many others, I was not that impressed by this movie in the beginning. Although I really liked it in the end, at least the pace of the first half of the film was too slow for me. So naturally, my mind went wandering off to many thoughts while watching it, like "Oh it's so summery" (In reality, outside was 6 inches of snow) or "Everyone is swimming all the time."

One of those random thoughts was that I liked their choice of music. First, I noticed that they used M.A.Y. In the Backyard by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Overall, they effectively use some music from the 80s. Words by F.R. David is one of my favorite 80s music, and I have never owned it in my music library. This is actually the reason I decided to purchase the original soundtrack of Call Me by Your Name. It goes without saying that two songs (Mystery of Love and Visions of Gideon) by Sufjan Stevens are really good and emotional.

I believe that Call Me by Your Name owes a lot to its music. This soundtrack brings you back to the beautifully emotional scenes of the film and really enhances your experience of it. Highly recommended.
