Editorial Reviews
Miles Davis catalogue contains several albums that are required listening for jazz aficionados, including Miles Ahead, Porgy & Bess, Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain. Each of these albums are rightfully acknowledged as important milestones in the development of jazz, yet we go a little bit further back into his catalogue to present Birth Of The Cool. Unlike the afore-mentioned albums, Birth Of The Cool is a compilation album, issued by Capitol in 1957 from a series of sessions originally recorded between 1949 and 1950. The unusual instrumentation stood out even then, but it was only later that the music world realised we had witnessed the launch of a new style of jazz in cool jazz. As ground-breaking and innovative now as it was then, this is almost a compulsory purchase for any jazz fan.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2024Volumes have been written about this album, which I could never top in a few words.
I will say, if you have an appreciation of Jazz you ought to own this. Pure and simple truth.
The pressing on this album is excellent and clean.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018Birth of the Cool (1957) was actually recorded from 1949-50 by a very young Miles Davis and his band, featuring ‘cool’ numbers that are smooth, subtle, relaxing, yet still mildly grooving in tempo. I’ve held off on getting this album for quite some time, but I’m glad that my jazz collection now features some post-WWII cool jazz. I highly recommend the sounds of this Miles Davis album for a great wind down to a stressful day. Warning: The last track, ‘Darn that Dream’ is addictive!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2013This proves to me that the best "Traditional" Jazz was created during this time. Of , I am not a fan of "Bitches Brew" or "Live Evil". That being said, I believe Miles and all his contemporaries "Chased the Voodoo Down" during this era, before they plugged in their amps and did so much heroine that they sought of got off the rails. That is an opinion, not a fact. I believe that louder is not better, and these guys could get your foot and your mind tapping without volume or drugs. I wish they knew that, Miles might still be with us. Together with "Kind Of Blue" and "In a Silent Way" this is the third of the Must Have Miles Davis trilogy......
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2016Picked this up after seeing the Don Cheadle directed/starrer 'Miles Ahead' which is a fictionalized telling of a creatively fallow period in Davis's life. When I was in college I was a fan of the Digable Planets and their most popular single 'Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)' (1992) draws inspiration from this album-- and not just the title.
I've always found music reviews to be a bit problematic-- not every style is going to please everyone and what I consider seminal might just be 'meh' to someone else. It's a crap shoot. I've always found Davis's playing to be very 'athletic' and energizing to me as a listener, which belies the conventional wisdom of jazz as a sort of lackadaisical mess. I don't know why this album resonates with me so much, but Wikipedia says the pieces are inspired by classical techniques and forms and I like classical so maybe that's it?
'Boplicity', 'Jeru', and 'Venus de Milo' are standouts for me, and I recognized a few licks because the same or similar were probably sampled in early 90s hip hop/rap tracks. I found the last track, 'Darn that Dream' featuring vocals by Kenny Hagood, a bit jarring because of the vocals but really it's a good reminder of Davis' skill as a collaborator. He was able to hold his own on, or relinquish control of, any style of track.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2012The quality of the music on this if very fine - the true roots of hard bop are clearly at hand! This is certainly NOT elevator music (as one reviewer states it) and is nearly a must for jazz fans. The playing is competent and inspired throughout. The sound is acceptable - not much can be done about the original recordings, which were not of the best quality. You do not buy this recording for the audio quality, you buy it for the priveledge of listening to one of the most influential performances of the post-bop jazz style.
This really is not to be missed - highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2017The clarity is amazing. The artwork is beautifaul, and the LP seems to have a nice gloss to it. I already had this on CD, so I bought if for the purpose of my LP collection, but I'm blown away by the quality. excellent Album both in presentation of the record and artwork/liner notes, and the audio. This is a great introduction to mellow, yet complex, cool Jazz for those who have not heard this before.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2021I would like it if it had more music on it. It is great to listen to it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2013If you like vinyl... this is a must own! This is the Birth of Cool, Miles Davis. How can any serious music fan not own this? I had a dinner party and put this bad boy on, everyone loved it. Took the party to a whole new level. Ah the sweet sound of Miles on vinyl. There's nothing like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice pressing of a classic
Obviously not true audiophile quality, it seems to pressed from a digital source, but whatever source was used was very good. Quality of the vinyl and packaging is excellent. Record is flat and quiet, and the White vinyl looks cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ageless
Gerry Mulligan's compositions and arrangements are beautiful. And they make up the majority of the disk. But I guess Miles was the BIG NAME at the time. As fresh now as it was then which in some ways is a sad comment on the (lack of) popularity of jazz today. Many reasons - lack of musical education and the cost of getting hold of musical scores to study are two. The availablilty of cheap, good student instruments is another. Why pay a load of money when you can strum 5 or 6 chords and sound something like a tune you heard on the radio? And if you try a bit harder you get paid for it :-))
