Sometimes a good family movie steals the show at the time and is necessary, this one fits the bill. An Admiral at the Coast Guard Academy, Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid) is raising his troops, or eight children, alone, they are supposed to fall in like most soldiers. From youngest to elder, these children must abide by rules, salute, and 'look alive'. They all are a loved and well-oiled machine. Frank meets up with his high school sweetheart, Helen North (Rene Russo) at a formal function and goes straight back to being in love with her again. She is raising her brood of ten children alone too and is a complete opposite of Frank. Her children are encouraged to be artistic and create what they want to with their lives. Helen is a life-loving and free-spirited handbag designer. The two adults get married right after their evening together and introduce two parents, eighteen children and a few different animals to a household full of love, but mainly chaos as the kids decide to revolt. An exaggerated remake of the nineteen sixty-eight Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda film with the same premise. Watch this if you are purely in the mood for some fun and this is family safe which still has its share of kid appeal too. A good family picture to feel good about, oh, and the Piggy steals the show!

We've been watching it a couple of times per year ever since it was released in 2005. We have 6 kids from elementary through high school age and everyone likes this movie! Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo do a fantastic job of portraying the struggles of blending families while still maintaining a separate identity. The children do a great job with their acting. Plenty of humor and lots of feels! 5-star rating for sure!

I read a really scathing review about this movie and I'm kinda in shock. It is not that hard to believe that kids would play tricks to separate the parents. And true to most children brought up with a some moral character, guilt and remorse soon follow as they actually learn to like each other, of course because they 'worked together' for a common cause.

Anyway, it's a breath of fresh air to watch a movie that is clean and funny, and yes, all while knowing the basic plot and outcome. Enjoy!

I only discover this movie a few years ago and didn’t realise how much I was going to love it. I initial thought was that it was going to try and be cheaper by the dozen ( which is another movie I love) but I wasn’t, I admit there are similarities but seeing two completely different families coming together really shows the power of family.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone.
