Product Description

Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) is an unstable young woman with a checkered past of obsessive behavior. She secretly moves to Los Angeles to befriend Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen)—an Instagram "influencer" with a fabulous artist boyfriend, a camera-ready terrier, and an array of new products and brands to promote to her followers. After Ingrid adopts a Taylor-made identity for herself, her attempts to prove she's BFF material are underway—that is, until she meets Taylor's obnoxious brother Nicky, who threatens to tear down her façade. Also starring O'Shea Jackson Jr., Ingrid Goes West is a savagely hilarious dark comedy that brilliantly satirizes the modern world of social media and proves that being #perfect isn't all it's cracked up to be.

A social-media obsessed woman with borderline personality disorder moves to Los Angeles to insert herself into another woman’s life, severely disrupting the lives of everyone she encounters in this dark comedy by debut writer-director Matt Spicer. Ingrid Goes West (2017) has a lot to say about contemporary American society, but despite being shot and promoted as a comedy, there’s really nothing funny about it.

Its humor comes from Aubrey Plaza‘s performance as Ingrid Thorburn, the unfortunate young woman just looking for a best friend. Her portrayal is awkward, charming, and at times frightening. But even though we’re invited to laugh at her fumbled personal interactions, there are no jokes or one-liners. This lack of overt-comedy is not a deficit.

As the film opens, a distraught Ingrid maces a bride for not inviting her to the wedding and is committed to a mental hospital. Upon release, she sees Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen) in a magazine and begins following her on Instagram. Ingrid comments on a photo and Taylor replies, inviting her to check it out next time she’s in LA. Coincidentally, Ingrid’s mother dies, leaving her with a $60,000 inheritance. Ingrid uses that money to move to LA and rent a house from aspiring screenwriter and Batman fanboy Dan Pinto (O’Shea Jackson, Jr.).

Once in LA, Ingrid remakes her personality and appearance in Taylor’s image and plots to insert herself in the woman’s life, going so far as to kidnap her and her husband Ezra’s (Wyatt Russell) dog so she can return it. Ingrid and Taylor become friends, but their relationship is complicated by the appearance of Taylor’s drug-addict brother, Nicky (Billy Magnussen), and fashion blogger Harley Chung (Pom Klementieff), who begin to monopolize Taylor’s time.

Ingrid’s plans unravel when Nicky snoops through her phone and discovers her fixation with Taylor. He tries to blackmail her, and she fakes abuse to convince Dan to help abduct Nicky and scare him away. When that plan goes awry, Nicky tells Taylor everything and Taylor cuts Ingrid completely out of her life. Ingrid spirals out of control, eventually recording a suicide video and uploading it to Instagram. Dan rescues her, but while she was in the hospital, her video went viral and she received hundreds of supportive messages from people around the world, finally giving her the sense of acceptance she craved.

Plaza’s portrayal of Ingrid is genuine and convincing. When Nicky confronts her, she pleads with him, asking what’s wrong with wanting to be Taylor’s friend. Most people who suffer from mental illness don’t think there’s anything wrong with their behavior, even when it’s obvious to everyone around them. Everyone wants to be accepted and loved by others, of course, but never go to such extremes. That’s because a person with borderline personality disorder doesn’t have a developed personality. Ingrid needs another person to give her a stable sense of self.

As the film progresses, it’s shown that like Taylor’s Instagram posts, her personality is merely a superficial collection of objects. Her favorite book, for example, was her husband’s favorite, and she never read it. Popularity and acceptance, for both Ingrid and Taylor, comes from wearing the right clothes and accessories, eating at the right restaurants, paying lip service to the right social trends, and displaying those things for all to see. It suggests our national obsession with broadcasting our lives on social media is a kind of insanity.

Ingrid Goes West is refreshing in that it doesn’t glamorize mental illness like many TV shows and Hollywood movies. It’s a shame the film didn’t do better at the box office, but its dark lampooning of our superficial obsession with social media probably hit too close to home for most audiences. Still, it has received generally favorable reviews and currently has a rating of 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

This film captures the essence of the online profile in all its deception and superficial shaky ground. Ingrid's life is sad and empty, but with a few clicks on her Instagram account, associating herself with popular culture, she is able to present something completely different. All the while trying to live in this space as if it is real. Aubrey Plaza is perfect in her depiction of Ingrid, presenting her character with an ongoing emotional undercurrent of fear, desperation, disgust, and glee. You can almost see the emotional juggling on Ingrid's face in every frame. She actually hates the world she is so desperate to be a part of but is too wrapped up in the idea that this fake world will save her. The movie is not preachy, it simply presents the reality of obsessive interaction with the online community through the eyes of a deeply disturbed person, who bases her entire existence on equally as troubled, but seemingly more together individuals. Spoiler alert, Ingrid finds happiness in the end in a disturbing way.

This film won the award for best screenplay at Sundance.

It is billed as being about a disturbed young woman, and you don't need to look too closely, to see Ingrid as someone who most likely has always been on the outside looking in, and never learned the rules of fitting in with the popular crowd.

You get a glimpse of her desolate life; the empty, upper-middle-class home she likely grew up in, an empty hospital bed, a normal looking teenager's bedroom, complete with red and blue ribbons on her walls, and appears to have been steadily occupied by Ingrid, now in her 20's.

After losing her mother, who she describes as her best friend, and an extended stay in a psychiatric hospital for assaulting a bride at her wedding, a "friend" who left Ingrid devastated when she was not invited, Ingrid takes action with the 70k she inherits to rebuild her life.

Heading west to California, she is determined to meet Taylor, a social media star, and become her real-life best friend.

This was a challenging review to write. The script is so well-written, seemlessly weaving heartbreak AND outrageous, brilliant satire, I had to pay close attention to ingrid, who deserves a precise description.

A fascinating character, Ingrid is definitely ill. Her own self-obsession and lack of empathy make it impossible for her to really understand superficiality, or value a true, reciprocal friendship. Yet, her vulnerability and determination, misguided as it is, make us still hold out hope and root for Ingrid.

Aubrey Plaza is perfection as Ingrid, played flawlessly with the deadpan style she's known for in stand-up and other film roles.

A very astute look at social media, and how technology and mental illness contribute to isolation, its dangers, bullying, and the devastation lonliness and a desperate need to be accepted can cause.

With an excellent supporting cast, this was just a great little movie.

The movie is fun to watch because the acting is overall really good. However the storyline is fake and the ending encourages really bad behavior. If she really is so crazy she wouldn't be functional enough to pull off all the manipulative and crazily impressive things she does in the movie. But if you want something silly and fun to watch it's nice and has some fun and ridiculous moments. It's just not realistic at all.

Definitely worth a watch. Has comedy and a no bs attitude. Social commentary spot on and a bit tragic. But honest.

Just so watchable. What is it about the lead actress that I always find so hypnotic? I can't remember her name audrey/Aubrey or something? She plays her typical cynical straight-faced sociopath that I love and the story is simple but I just loved it. Oddly relatable and reflective of the way many view social media but also I just love film a with a slightly deranged female lead.
