When I first got them in I didn’t think I received a gallons worth, but when put them into a gallon pitcher it was almost exactly right.I haven’t used them enough to see how they work as a filter media but they seem porous so I can’t imagine they won’t work.I was impressed enough I bought another gallon of them.

    I like the size and how easy it is to use them. Aquariums look great. I am not a chemist so I can't tell you about how effective they are but my fish look good and healthy and my plants are great and my water is pristine. That is all that matters to me anyway.

    Like the included bag to keep media contained, but used as biological filtration has flaws.
    It is very fragile and crumbles very easily, leaving a mess in your sump
    It clogs very easily over time due to the small pores and is hard to clean because it is such a rough surface.
    Over time IU suspect surface area is less than conventional bio-all material due to clogging.
    Not recommended.....
