Beautiful package for an amazing game!
5 out of 5 stars
Beautiful package for an amazing game!
The package arrived with no damage at all, which is always a plus. The Steelbook case is pretty neat, and it has space for both the game Disc and the OST disc (both included in the bundle). The DLC items can be obtained by playing the game, a few hours in, so I don't see any real value in it, unless you like to start a bit better equipped from the get go. Finally, the papercraft kit looks amazing on my desk, since I have always liked Studio Ghibli for both their storytelling and their art style. I recommend the game if you like JRPGs like Final Fantasy or the "Tales of..." series.

Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is an excellent Japanese RPG in the vein of the Kingdom Hearts series. In fact, when I first became Roland- one of the characters- and engaged in a fight, I had some serious flashbacks to being Sora fighting the heartless. That being said, if you’ve ever wanted to play a video game, or become more immersed, in a Studio Ghibli-like setting with beautiful art, great (albeit lighthearted) stories, and solid musical elements, this is that game. The plot of the game isn’t entirely unheard of, but you’ll feel engaged the whole way through if you are a fan of RPGs.

I got this game as a story-game break from action titles like Rocket League, Battlefield1, and others like those. This fits that role perfectly. It’s not the most challenging to win fights- though to be fair you can increase the difficulty on the fly for bigger rewards. However, if you’re looking for a break from your routine or really like story-driven games, this will hit the spot. As a bonus, this is one of the few games I’ve played where friendly AI are actually helpful in a fight.

    Final Verdict: 9.5/10
    +Beautiful art
    +Solid story with engaging characters
+Fluid battle mechanics for real-time battles
    +City-builder adds purpose

-Somewhat heavy on the “everything will turn out just rosy” side. Not necessarily bad if you enjoy lighthearted games for what they are.
-Combat can be a bit too easy on Normal mode.

The game is beautiful much like the original. The art design shines clearly and consistently despite the unique zones. The storyline, although fairy tale like in its overall feel, draws you into this world.

Some elements are severely simplified over the first. Combat is more fluid but rarely hits the level of complexity and difficulty of the original. Zones have smoother transitions of monster levels. The higgeldy system is a stripped down version of the Pokemon like companions in the first.

But for all this streamlining, the game finds its own footing. Higgeldy use provides a good mix of actives and passives in party combat. The skirmish system and kingdom building provide additional content that breaks the grind of post game dungeons and side quests.

Ni No Kuni 2 is not a pure sequel, but it is a well crafted successor.

I never had a chance to play the first Ni No Kuni, and i regret it since i heard great things about it. I wasn't going to miss out again so I made sure to get Ni No Kuni 2. I'm 20 hrs into the game and here's what I can tell you!

Story: (7/10) Ni No Kuni 2's story isn't something you haven't heard before. A young king, Evan, is betrayed, his kingdom and nearly his life taken from him if it weren't for his protector Roland, a man pulled from his world, one that seems very similar to ours, and dropped into this whimsical fantasy land. Throughout the game, you'll work on building a new kingdom, new relationships, while trying to deal with an ancient evil hellbent on ending the world.  It's a charming, cliche fairy tale, however it's one that you can't help but to long for the same happy ending King Evan himself is trying to achieve. Luckily for me, I love this kind of thing x)

Characters: (6/10) The characters feel like they have been made from a checklist. There's the innocent, optimisic Evan with a huge heart; Mentor, protector, and fatherly figure Roland, calm, cool, and, collected, he is bound to everyone's favorite character; Rough and tough big, bad Batu and his brave yet mischievous daughter Tani; Magical little mascot character with a over-the-top personality, Lofty; and lastly: A hopelessly dedicated and loyal assistant, Leander. These characters never stray out of their trope, which leads to predictable reactions and conversations. But hey, if it ain't broke, why fix it? I feel as though these character types are necessary to the story. I do personally enjoy all of them, and on the occasion when things do get emotional or dive into their backgrounds, it can be quite intriguing to learn more about them.

Gameplay Pt 1: Combat- (9/10) As you can see, I broke gameplay into parts. Part 1 will be the combat. And I love the combat. It's swift, fluent, and flashy. You have your standard dodge, block, light attack, heavy attack controls, with a little twist of managing MP, weapon switching, and special skills. It all works as it should: fast and fun! The A.I. partners are smart and actually helpful. The adorable higgledies spirits that you assign to your party have their own skills as well as ones you have to activate yourself.

The battle system is designed to keep eyes going across the whole screen, whether it's open world or dungeon crawling, and ties everything together with beautiful visuals. I'm still not tired of any of the skills I spam xD I'd give it a 10/10 if it weren't so easy. I never felt in any actually dangerous without purposely putting myself there. Overall, the combat is so fun you may find yourself triggering battles more often than not. I hate boring, ridiculously long grinding, but it's nothing like that. Ni No Kuni 2's combat is super fun and it doesn't feel like a chore at all.

Gameplay Pt 2: Kingdom Building (6/10)- Ah yes, the kingdom building. This is the most time consuming part of the game. Evan and friends are trying to build a brand new kingdom, and that requires people, resources, and money. You do quests and progress story to find people to join you, they assist you with gathering mats or researching, all the while collecting currency called King Guilders, which is different from your own money you hold onto. Everything in the kingdom requires people and king-guilders, so you will spend time waiting for that to pile up. Then you will spend time doing research and upgrades, and it's all in real time. If they says it will take an hour to complete, that's a literal 60 mins in real life. Not cool if you ask me.

You can spend king guilders to make it go faster, but ultimately you will have to wait for king guidlers to build up again for other projects and buildings, so why even bother? See where I'm going with this? It's REALLY time consuming and really annoying, but they all have very helpful results, so I often look forward to reap my rewards. At the very least, the game should allow money to accumulate and research time to go by even when you log out, but no sadly you have to be playing for this to go by. Luckily, you can start a bunch of projects at once and then go out and explore to kill time.

Gameplay Pt 3: Skirmishes: (7/10)- Ok so Skirmishes are not as bad a people are making them out to be. You control your little chibi army and go toe to toe with others, until one team is wiped out. That sounds fun to me on paper, but ultimately it just running your unit into anothers and hoping to win. You rotate them, use their special skills, and match strengths and weaknesses. It's like a game within a game, and i do enjoy trying to finish it the most efficient way possible.

Gameplay Overall: They took a bunch of different play styles and made it into Ni No Kuni 2's style. I like it when it works, and even where it doesn't, it's still not that bad. (But the time on building the kingdom is seriously atrocious... Hopefully an update will fix that 1 day.)

Graphics: (10/10) The art style works so well for this game, it's amazing. This game is very beautiful, I cannot stress that enough! It reminds me of Pixar level animation, it pops with colors, lighting, environment, it's gorgeous through and through! The characters, the locations, the fighting, it all looks very polished and attractive. I have two little sisters who loves watching me play this game because it looks like a fairy tale brought to life! I give it 10/10, my eyes were very happy, but I'm sure quite a few ppl aren't fond of the cutesy art style it displays.

Sound: (7/10)- The music is good enough to set a tone, but nothing (with the exception of 1 or 2 songs) really stands out. It's background music, but that's it, not really memorable. The voice acting isn't too bad bad, I just wish there was more of it. Battle effects sound really cool, you can definitely tell the difference between a normal hit and a hit at 100% max weapon.

Overall: (8/10)- Ni No Kuni 2 is a great game, but It's not for everyone. It's smooth sailing, treating its players with stunning visuals and a familiar tale that can appeal to anyone of any age. If you have a love for classic fantasy tales and rpgs, definitely look into Ni No Kuni 2! I recommend the Easy Allies review for an even more informative review!

PS: I got the Premium Edition. It came with a steelbook, dlc swords (5 if them), papercraft display, and a cd with 4 songs on it. It's not too impressive, but i really love the steelbook!

I played about 5 hours of Ni No Kuni and it was fun, but due to life, I had to put the controller down and eventually forgot about it.

Ni No Kuni II, however, is everything I look for in a fun single player game. It's extremely story driven and has some powerful moments, but it also included a lot of things I would have never expected... THERE ARE SO MANY MINI GAMES!
Ok, I wouldnt consider them mini games... but there are parts of the games that would fall under different genres of games.
Action, Kingdom builders, puzzles, hack and slash, etc.
I loved that these were included in the game. They dont seem out of place, but fit the theme and the story extremely well.

It's worth playing if you're like me, love all types of games, and like to play games that are lay-back enjoyable and that I can put down and come back to at another time.

Plus... idk why this gets to me, but I LOVE games that change the character's shown weapons/gear when you change their equipment. love the details in games like that. (Although NNK II only changes the weapons.) STILL COOL.

Let’s be frank. You’re paying $20 extra for the steelbook. The CD is four 3 minute songs. The paper craft thing is absolutely horrid. Even an engineering student would have a hard time with this. And sure, DLC is nice I guess. But this should have been $65, max. This is absolute highway robbery for almost $80.

Es un excelente juego, buena historia y combate que no llega a aburrir por su variedad, unico problema es el diorama que es casi imposible armar porque las piezas pueden moverse o salirse de su lugar y se viene abajo todo

Hadn't played the first installment, am thirteen hours in to the second and have got to say this is a great game. I think this is considered a jrpg,I don't know a lot about them but this a terrific game. You might be hesitant to like the story at first, I didn't want to the first little bit but the characters really grow on you, they really develop them well which I for some reason didn't think would happen. Story is so unexpected so far, just where, when and why a story goes where it goes. Not sure where the detractors are, some of the stuff seems like I don't need to do it but I can easily forget or overlook it. Just will end with I'm very glad I get to play this game and would but it again knowing what I would be in for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very, very disappointing Premium edition

This 3 stars is for the "Premium" edition of Ni no kuni 2. The package is 100$ CDN and it is REALLY CHEAP. There's no hardcover artbook, the cartboard 3D thing is king of worth it, but it must cost no more than 5$ to produce this kind of cheap sculture. Other than that you get a metal case for the game (fine) with a soundtrack CD. NICE should you say? NOPE. The soundtrack CD only contains 4 (FOUR!!!) songs. It's a very very cheap offer. They just want you to get a taste of the soundtrack and hope you buy the full one on digital stores. It's really not worth the money. Buy the standard edition instead and don't waste more than 25$ for a steelbook, which is the only truly valuable thing in the Premium edition. Remember the time when you pre-ordered a Dark Souls title and instantly got a steelbook with the full soundtrack CD and, in select retailers, a small hardcover artbook? FOR NOT ADITIONNAL PRICE?

Yes, I miss those days too.
