Dean Martin once delt cards for money, and knew a lot of card tricks that wowed his children.. Dean knew cards.. And he knew movies that worked..

I love the old Dean Martin Variety shows. On them he would mention that he was working on westerns and would add a little western flavor to the show. Deano had a ranch and loved his horses and he had a few he really prized.

FIVE CARD STUD Starring Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum, Inger Stevens, Roddy McDowall, and Katherine Justice, is a very well written western I'd classify as a western action/drama. It is heavy on the drama of one dangerous card game and the action that unfolds from it. Robert Mitchum plays cool and tough (as usual) and Roddy McDowall's character is played very well. Dean shines in this movie and his charachter is likable and believable. You'll like the twists as well as the ending!

***Other Dean Martin & Western Suggestions:
"Rio Bravo" with "The Duke" John Wayne (another 5 star performance!)
    "Seargeants 3" with Frank Sinatra
"4 For Texas" with Frank Sinatra

I think most guys have a few good westerns in their DVD collections. John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, The Highwayman's "Stage Coach", and Sinatra & Martin are in some of mine.
Many Women seem to love 'period pieces' with all the costumes and scenery like the Janette Oke series. Nice, but I like the "western" 'grit' in movies like this one, "Five Card Stud". I highly recommend it for the poker lover who likes westerns too.

I rented this on Amazon because my husband mentioned watching this when he was a kid and it was a good movie that he'd like to watch again. The story really held our attention, when you consider the time that this was made - the actors did a wonderful job. My husband likes Dean Martins acting but does not like the movies where he sings a lot. Dean does not sing in this movie - you can hear his voice singing in the opening credits and the closing but that is it. We rooted for so many people in this movie because we understood their feelings. Roddy McDowall was creepy as all get out, I'm used to him being funny - when I saw him in this movie - I said, "Wow! Good job Roddy on creeping me out!" I usually can guess what is happening at the beginning of a movie but I will admit I didn't guess who the snitch was. We don't usually find movies we would watch again and/or buy but we would buy this movie. We are in our late 40's if that helps.
My goodness, we miss these great actors and good movies from the 60's.

SPOILER WARNING!! This review is for those who have already seen this fine film (or don't mind knowing the ending). I've read the earlier reviews and believe the tragic elements of this story have been overlooked.
When I first saw this movie on TV years ago I thought Mitchum's character was the hero, and I still do, albeit a flawed hero. Mitchum plays Jonathan Rudd, a preacher who comes to Rincon, Colorado to avenge the murder of his card-cheat brother. A murder even the town sheriff says won't be investigated. I believe Mitchum was sincerely trying to clean up the town by removing the guilty (based on misinformation from an especially sleazy McDowell) and by trying to prevent further slips hellward by maintaining the church in an increasingly sinful town (a whorehouse had recently opened in Rincon along with an influx of greedy, violence-prone goldminers).
Mitchum is a flawed hero for his blasphemous statement that today he is the Lord and vengeance is his; he was wrong to take justice into his own hands (though in the movie's Rincon, and often in the Old West, it may have been the only earthly justice to be had). Nonetheless I found him much more admirable than Dean Martin's character, who gambles for a living and cavorts with courtesans while shamelessly leading on an innocent young lady. Contrast that with Mitchum, who preaches righteousness in his church and lays fresh flowers on his brother's grave.

Five Card Stud is a very enjoyable but tragic film, because the hero is killed in the end. As for the film itself, it is beautiful to watch. Martin's Van Morgan is a bit flip (Matt Helm under a cowboy hat), Mitchum clearly relished his role (reminiscent of Night of The Hunter) as did McDowell playing the cold-blooded psychotic whelp who wouldn't even cry at his mother's funeral. Yaphet Kotto is also very good, even if his character is a bit of an anachronism here. The title song, crooned by Dino, is catchy and sticks in my head for a day or two after every watching.

Dean Martin has the lead role in this movie about the aftermath of a lynching, and, you know, he does just fine. He has the appropriate rough-hewn face, he's at ease with his female co-stars, and he manages to keep control of the scenes he has with Robert Mitchum, whose screen presence can blow lesser actors right into the water. Mitchum plays a sinister preacher, something he was very very good at, and it's a pleasure to hear his wonderful voice. Roddy McDowell plays a creep, and he does that very well; you find yourself asking, "How has this guy lived so long?".
Enjoyable and worth the rental fee.

Another reviewer has called this a great western and a murder mystery combined; it's as good a description of this movie as any. Dean Martin mostly played in comedic roles as an actor; but, he was very good in dramatic ones as well. Henry Hathaway was a noted western director who directed this one with Robert Mitchum in the other lead role. It is a movie with some suspense and surprise, and what we all want in a western. This is worth your and my time in watching again and again.

Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum and Roddy McDowall (as a slimy snake in the grass role) is an excellent movie. You may figure out some of the secrets before the exposure, but it is ok. Works.

Un classique . Dans la lignée de 100 dollars pour un shérif pour sa réalisation soignée et deux acteurs sublimes Dean Martin et Robert Mitchum. Je recommande vivement ce titre que tout cinéphile se doit d'avoir.
