Product Description

In June, 1944, the Allied Forces stand on the brink of the greatest invasion of history: D-Day and the landing on the beaches of Normandy, France-the first step in the campaign to free Europe from the tyranny of Nazi Germany. But even as close to one million Allied soldiers are secretly assembled on the south coast of England preparing to invade Nazi-occupied Europe, Great Britain's iconic Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Brian Cox) struggles with the decision to embark on the operation. Fearful of repeating, on his disastrous command, the mass slaughter of more than 500,000 soldiers during World War I's Battle of Gallipoli in 1915, he is terrified that if the D-Day landings fail, he will be remembered as the architect of the war's greatest carnage. As D-Day approaches, Churchill-exhausted by years of war, plagued by depression and obsessed with fulfilling historical greatness-finds himself at odds with his fellow Allied military leaders-turned-political opponents: U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower (John Slattery) and British Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery (Julian Wadham). Meeting with Churchill in the days preceding the planned invasion, the two grow increasingly frustrated by the fearful and fatigued Churchill's reluctance to invade and attempts to stop the operation. It is only with the intervention of King George VI that Churchill agrees to move forward with the invasion, with the two discussing the possibility of observing the D-Day landings aboard an operational cruiser. It is Churchill's brilliant and unflappable wife Clementine Churchill (Miranda Richardson) who keeps him strong during those dark and possibly dire days. By injecting into her husband ever more confidence, courage and conviction-and acting as both an emotional blanket and a personal sounding board-“Clemmie” halts the exceedingly unwell Winston's physical and mental collapse, inspiring him to become a true hero of his age and Britain's most celebrated leader.

How truly horrible to come here after first seeing the movie and seeking to order the Blu Ray presentation, and read these gutter sniping reviews! My goodness!

Having spent a lifetime in military service and a considerable time studying both World Wars, I think perhaps I have a descent enough comprehension of both to comprehend what this movie so eloquently presented -- a detailed examination of a man who's life is already the subject of fantastic historical analysis.

It is a study in human character, showing both the extreme duress and challenge of any single man trying to keep things together, facing the specter of scores of people dying violently each day, and also sharing from his personal past an in depth knowledge of one of history's most terrible military disasters, the amphibious assault at Gallipoli during World War I.

Churchill held significant and genuine fears of that amphibious assault at Normandy precisely because of the firm belief that no matter how well planned, his grudging respect for the fighting skills of the Germans for him meant it would likely end as another disaster. The experience at Dieppe made that belief all the more powerful.

How anyone can condemn the movie as sullying Churchill is beyond rational comprehension. The scenes of him getting a brutally honest reminder of his vital role from his young secretary was well presented, and one can see how it took something like that to shake Churchill out of his malaise. The final scene of him delivering the famous BBC speech at the start of the D-Day operation, and the cut away's of his wife and the generals who planned and ordered the operation, show how they, and the people and soldiers, drew inspiration from his words.

But, it also shows how those closest to him, who experienced the understandable boorish behavior of the man could both understand how it was the result of extreme torment and anxiety, as well as admire the man's immortal ability to rise above his personal demons and repeatedly inspire a generation of people to summon the courage to defeat tyranny.

It cannot be denied; Sir Winston Churchill is certainly a Titan of the 20th Century; it could credibly be argued that he single-handedly saved England and Great Britain in the dark days of World War II. I bought four DVDs on the subject, this one, in which you will see a different Sir Winston, a seriously-fearful, concerned leader, unwilling, unable to relinquish the fate of his England to the upstart, Ike. Because we have the benefit of knowing that D-Day worked, that it was not the disaster Sir Winston feared, we can be excused of not sharing his trepidation. But, to truly understand the point this movie makes, you have, somehow, to 'not know' what happened beginning on June 6, 1944.

The first movie to give the true story of Churchill's folly and weakness and his wife's wisdom and strength at one of the most crucial moments in history: D-Day. It makes little sense without knowledge of his WWI colossal failure at Gallipoli. Special Features should be watched first; it will enrich the movie experience immensely. The movie gives great insight into old age and being left behind in a rapidly changing world. Superb portrayals of him, his wife, his king and his new secretary. Truth that encourages the viewer: NEVER GIVE UP.

I have seen a number of the different movies of Churchill's life and what stands out in this one is how Churchill is not listened to by the military, that he is told to get lost, that his opinion is not relevant. His "value" is to keep up the morale of the people and run the government.

Fantastic apparently true tale of Churchill's change of heart about D Day. Recalling the disastrous outcome during WWI when Churchill was in charge of the British navy and planned the ill fated disaster at Gallipoli when thousand of British and Australian troops were slaughtered, I'm sure all that came back to Churchill when it got close to D Day. Very moving account of his feelings that D Day should not be undertaken. Highly recommended.

"Churchill" is a dramatic and believable movie. However, historians specializing in WWII severely criticize its portrayal of Churchill. See Wikipedia.

I dislike movies that get their history wrong.

High protection values and some very nice camera work poor casting distracts so much. The actor portraying Eisenhower was years older then Ike even after his term as president! It makes the film not credible and is constantly distracting.
The Churchill character is fair but lacks his voice, speech patterns and inflections. King George was the one great portrayal and the most believable.
An average film that could have been much better.

An excellent film that captured the dreadful time in early 1940 when all was nearly lost due to fear and the desire to negotiate a "peace".This struggle is captured in this film which was most realistic. A good film with some really good qualities of character such as courage, honour, and dignity and fairness, qualities rarely seen in such abundance in modern culturally focussed films!!!!
