Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition. Originally released by Trojan Records early in 1969, Dancing Down Orange Street is today widely regarded as one of the finest and most sought after albums from the classic 'boss reggae' era. The LP, showcasing a dozen of the most popular late rock steady and early reggae productions of leading Jamaican producer, Sonia Pottinger, is presented here in it's entirety for the first time on CD, with the original selection bolstered by a further 13 bonus tracks from the period. Included are numerous Jamaican hits performed by many of Jamaica's finest vocal talent from the era, with many making their long overdue CD debut.

Originally released in '69 on Trojan's High Note label, this CD collects the original album plus 13 extra tracks from the same period. All the extra tracks were originally issued as singles in the UK in '68-'69. All tracks were produced by Sonia Pottinger who, while not as well known as male producers of the time, made her own mark in Jamaican music, and she finally received the recognition she deserved before her death. I was going to rate this release four "stars", but with songs like "That's Life" (Delano Stewart), "It Hurts" (The Soul Rhythms), "Live Good" (Ken Boothe), or "If You Can't Beat Them Join Them" (The Conquerors), I found myself grooving to one song after another--so five "stars" for me.

The original album has tracks by Ken Boothe, The Melodians, The Soul Rhythms, Delano Stewart, The Conquerors, Delroy Wilson, and The Afrotones. Check out Boothe's "Somewhere", or The Melodians' "Lonely", or Wilson's "I'm The One Who Loves You", or The Conquerors' "Look Pon You" as examples of Pottinger's production skills.

The extra tracks have things like "It Hurts" (Delroy Wilson), "We Were Lovers" (Patsy), "Mary Mary" (The Beltones), and other period singles that don't often show up on collections. These extras plus the original album (along with it's cool original album cover used here) shows some of Pottinger's production work. The tracks included here are great examples of this short-lived period in Jamaican music--a period where Pottinger made her mark by issuing some fine early music.

The 10 page booklet has an essay on both Pottinger and the music, plus period photos and 45 RPM labels from the Gay Feet, High Note, Treasure Isle, and Doctor Bird labels, and a complete track list. The sound is very good, not pristine (what early Jamaican music is?) but clean and pretty crisp sounding for tracks from this era.

Perhaps the best praise I can give this excellent compilation is to borrow from the liner notes, which say that "the 25 tracks on this long overdue collection .... sounds as fresh and vibrant at they did almost half a century ago."

And indeed, these fine songs have withstood the test of time; the melodies still sharp and the rhythms still strong. Great songs never age! Reggae fans will certainly be familiar with names on here such as Ken Boothe, the Melodians, and Delroy Wilson, but artists such as Delano Stewart and the Conquerors also are important components on this CD.

The foundation of this collection (the first 12 tracks came from a now out-of-print reggae sampler) of what is called "boss reggae" is the work of producer Sonia Pottinger, one of the very few women who played such a role in 1960s Jamaican music. Even though I consider myself a big reggae fan, I have to admit that I had never heard her name before getting this CD. Obviously, she had a great ear for music and know how to properly get these songs recorded. Most impressive.

If you are a fan of this golden era of timeless reggae music, by all means pick up this CD. Great, great tunes!

First time on CD for this hard to find album, originally issued by Trojan Records on their High Note subsidiary in early 1969. The album comprised twelve classic slices of late Rock Steady / early Reggae. The album is supplemented by thirteen tracks that were originally issued on High Note singles around the same time period. In total we have 25 classic and scarce tracks, all produced by female pioneer producer, the late Sonia Pottinger.

You'd need a pretty fat wallet to buy original copies of these on original vinyl. Excellent sound quality throughout. Great cover, and extensive notes in the inlay. This is the fourth release on the reactivated Doctor Bird label, and this set certainly doesn't let the side down.

    Superb.

It's just great to hear some of the tunes from back in the days when music was actually meaningful, melodic and violence free.
