Editorial Reviews
2017 release from the British folk legend. On the heels of the success of Acoustic Classics in 2014, Acoustic Classics Vol. II features acoustic renderings of classic songs from the Richard Thompson catalog, some previously recorded by other singers, some previously available only in a band format.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017The first collection (Acoustic Classics) was a real joy to my ears and I purchased my copy at a Richard Thompson - Iain Matthews show in Grass Valley, Ca. way back in May 2014. As great as the first set was I enjoy Acoustic Classics II even more than volume one as this one features some Richard standards mixed right in with some lesser known Thompson tunes.
"She Twists The Knife Again" starts this one up and Richard growls and snarls the lyrics like a man on a mission. One mention of Richard's guitar playing is all you need. He is a master of acoustic playing and it's all found right here on this disc. Mr. Thompson has improved as a singer over the course of the last few decades of performance and he is in his prime these days.
Both: "Genesis Hall" and "Crazy Man Michael" have been rearranged here and they are like brand-new songs they way the are presented on Acoustic Classics II. The sound quality of this CD is a wonder and it's like Richard is right in front of you performing his magic. I think all fourteen songs found here are fantastic but my favorite offering is "Gethsemane" and this version slays the original one.
Nobody makes music like this anymore, but Richard is just getting started.
This is the best disc I have heard in 2017.
FIVE STARS!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2018I'm one of those diehard Richard Thompson fans who doesn't hesitate to buy a new album when he releases it. Over all these years/decades he has never let me down. That said, I was a bit reluctant to purchase the first volume of this "Acoustic Classics" album when it came out a couple of years ago. New versions of old songs? Frankly, I wasn't sure I would be thrilled with the results. But I finally broke down and got the CD and was very impressed with it. After seeing a second volume of the "Acoustic Classics" come out, I had no such hesitations. Got it and love it!
As other reviewers have noted, RT puts a fresh spin on some of his old chestnuts. I particularly like the variety of songs he chose, not all of them obvious choices or fan favorites from his back catalog. As always, the guitar playing is masterful, but let us also praise Thompson's vocals too, something that I think is underrated about this great talent. The guitar playing and distinct vocals, it's safe to say that nobody else has a sound like Richard Thompson. All of his fans should love this album.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2017As good or better than the first volume. I particularly love the choices of 'She Twists the Knife Again', 'The Ghost of You Walks,' and 'Devonside.' I hope this release motivates listeners to delve deeper into his catalog. They will undoubtedly find it a richly rewarding journey. I am very much looking forward to the 'Acoustic Rarities' release in October.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2017What a title! I am not insinuating that there is any hyperbole in the title, rather I submit that Richard Thompson has a hard time not creating a "classic". So, one could assume that this is a collection of ACOUSTIC classics, rather than a collection of acoustic CLASSICS. Either way, I believe that this item constitutes a big Win for me, all other Richard Thompson fans, and any who take a chance on a very reasonably-priced set of recordings.
N.B., His other recordings (i.e., Acoustic Classics and Acoustic Rarities) are generously accompanied by "ripped" mp3 versions, if ordered through Amazon Prime. Unfortunately, that is not the situation with this item. Even so, this is a more than fair deal for a set of Acoustic Classics.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2017I don't have anything new to say about the great Richard Thompson. These dynamic acoustic versions were just what I was longing to hear when I became aware that such a CD had been compiled. They exhibit his trademark passion and virtuoso guitar improvisation in material that covers a grand swath of his prolific career.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2017If you're a dyed in the wool RT fan (or even a budding fan of his electric to acoustic renditions!), this record is a required addition to your personal RT collection. And a finer singer-songwriter you'll never find.....RT should add music to that line!
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2019Richard Thompson fans love his acoustic performances. This CD along with Acoustic Classics are must haves for outstanding acoustic guitar versions of many of RT’s best songs.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2017It's Richard Thompson. That jumps it way above most music. His voice and guitar are great! I need to pick up Volume One and Rarities also!

5.0 out of 5 stars Veteran folk rock singer songwriter & guitarist supremo with a 2nd stripped down selection from superb extensive back catalogue
Richard Thompson is my all time favourite electric and acoustic guitar player that I have ever seen in live performance. For an individual now completing 5 decades of a splendid career , he remains fresh and at the top of his game, someone others emulate and try to aspire to. He has a legion of loyal devoted fans, and this set is aimed at those who will have seen him in solo live performance, just him and his guitar, and his superb back catalogue of memorable distinctive quality songs.
This is the follow up album to his first Acoustics Classics album in 2014. Ever the perfectionist, he has re-recorded another great selection of songs from across his career, particularly revered will be versions from his late teens with Fairport Convention, of Meet on the Ledge. and Crazy Man Michael. I also particularly like his stirring vibrant version of Gethsemane which is one of the albums highlights for me. All the performances are great with clear sound, the guitar playing is as exemplary as ever, it often seems as it 2 or 3 guitarists must be playing, not just Richard on his own. This set is unlikely to gain any new listeners, but is aimed more squarely at long term fans like myself, who will lap this up.
My only minor gripe is the lack of any decent sleeve notes, or lyrics for the enclosed songs, which would have been great to have. Instead we get 2 sides of the inside of the CD booklet with names of individuals who supported this project through Pledge Music, a proud acknowledgement for those concerned, but frankly a bit pointless for the rest of us. Richard is touring the country later in the year to promote this album, so catch him somewhere near you live if you can, he is always excellent live
There is another album of rarities written often for others, that is due to come out in the autumn. While some of his contemporaries have been on the cabaret circuit for years, Richard remains vital, essential and still cutting edge, someone to admire and respect. Like a quality wine, he seems to gain more depth and just keep getting better with age, more power to his elbow, and dexterous nimble guitar playing fingers. He is in fine singing voice too. Highly recommended, listen to this master craftsman and enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars Siempre interesante
Sigue bien Richard......
