Product Description
Over the past 16 years, an extraordinary group of musicians has come together to celebrate the universal power of music. Named for the ancient trade route linking Asia, Africa and Europe, The Silk Road Ensemble, an international collective created by legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma, exemplifies music's ability to blur international boundaries, blend disparate cultures and inspire hope for artist and audience. The Sound of Silk, the latest film from the creators of the Oscar -winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, and the critically-acclaimed Best of Enemies follows an ever-changing lineup of performers drawn from the ensemble's more than 50 instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, arrangers, visual artists and storytellers as they gather in locations across the world, exploring the ways art can both preserve traditions and shape cultural evolution. Blending performance footage, personal interviews and archival film, director Morgan Neville and producer Caitrin Rogers focus on the journeys of a small group of Silk Road Ensemble mainstays from across the globe to create an intensely personal chronicle of passion, talent and sacrifice. Through these moving individual stories, the filmmakers paint a vivid portrait of a bold musical experiment and a global search for the ties that bind.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2024Unique energizing music with world original instruments. I play the CD in the house as often as I can .
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2019An absolutely charming and uplifting documentary about the role of music in the world. I am so pleased that Yo Yo Ma put this group together and they continue to share the beauty of music with us to this day. I usually show this at the end of the semester to send my students out with music in their hearts.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2016This is one of the more moving and inspiring documentaries I've seen in a long time, one I think everyone should watch. Yo Yo Ma's mesmerizing personality draws his musicians and his audiences along with him on a mission to bring cultures together. Each musician tells their story of struggle, and of obstacles they have had to overcome--in order to fulfill their goal to make music and to bring the message of peace, hope and meaning to human beings. Their mesmerizing playing, transcends language and their infectious music will transport you.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2017I'd give it ten stars if I could. I can't recommend this as a Must Have in anyone's collection. It is that universal in its scope and message, especially in the inside out and upside world we are currently muddling through. Visually breathtaking as it is musically, but it is the language and rhythm of humanity that will have your standing at applause at the end and smiling through the rest of the day.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2017Saw it first in the movie theater and couldn't wait until it was available to stream/buy. A wonderful documentary that shows the power of music to bring people together, no matter their cultural differences. Great back stories of Yo Yo Ma and the featured musicians, too. I would highly recommend it for its positive and joyful message.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2017This should be required viewing for every musician. But warning! This DVD comes to you from Berlin, and it's in European Region format, not American.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2016Wonderful film. Beautiful collaboration showing the vulnerable as well as the performance highs. How difficult to cross cultures and how valuable and profound in musical and personal ways. Wanted even more of the musicians to be featured, like the percussionists. Every person worthy. Scenes of each culture and setting show how diverse we are in our humanity. Powerful. More please.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirador proyecto de Yo-Yo-Ma
Muy inspiradora. Una iniciativa muy interesante, que promueve la colaboración de músicos buscando construir juntos. En un mundo tan individualista, resulta inspirador.
