Product Description
Based on the bestselling novels from Lev Grossman, The Magicians centers on Quentin Coldwater and his 20-something friends as they discover their magical abilities at Brakebills University, a secret grad school specializing in magic. While there, they come to the realization that the fantasies they read about as children are all too real, and unwittingly invite a malevolent entity from the other side into their lives. Heading into Season 2, this group of unlikely heroes have been thrust into even more dangerous and unfamiliar territory, and must draw upon their novice skills to defeat a threat that could destroy the magical world itself. Driven by power, revenge and survival, they learn that those who enter the hauntingly beautiful world of Fillory will never be the same as those who leave.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2025Truly my favorite show for background noise and also to watch. It’s great and I’ll love it forever
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2024I loved this show and unfortunately it got cancelled but it is worth the watch!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2017Got hooked watching Season 1 on Netflix. Don't have cable so I only see what I can access from my Prime or my friend's shared Netflix. I was planning on waiting til Season 2 showed up on Netflix or some other free method, but after going through Season 1 again, I broke down and bought the whole thing through Amazon and watched it stretched out over 3 days.
I can't top this description. "It's like Harry Potter on heroin." But I'll add what I can, having experienced almost everything from the 70s, except heroin:
Love the quirky weirdness and the courage of the writers play with the presentation on occasion, without going overboard. And I actually enjoy the limitations put on them by budget, which allows the viewer to go back in time to whenever it was they were last able to imagine themselves in the story they were creating or experiencing, whether on film or in book, or in the back yard.
I haven't read the books, so can't comment there, but I did end up liking Season 2 even more as the characters fleshed out. In fact, I liked Season 1 more the 2nd time I sped through it, knowing what was coming. Most shows these days don't challenge your assumptions of how characters are going act to in future events, but The Magicians did it enough to make the characters more human and interesting, while not throwing out the characteristics that make a given set of stock characters compelling in the first place, or locking in to what makes a given set of stock characters boring in the first place, depending on which characters attract one in the first place, which won't be exactly the same as those of other viewers.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2024Great movie, watched the whole series, loved every minute of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2024I love the whole series and have watched all five seasons - twice!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024The DVD meet my expectations but the non Amazon vendor glued the DVD to the paper box so I had to destroy the box to get my DVD.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2017I love this show, and despite what some people have said about it becoming either worse or more ridiculous than the first season, I personally find this season to be much more entertaining than the first. The first season had its merits--personal discovery, budding romance and friendships, mystery and just enough gore to differentiate it from Harry Potter, but it was definitely a more serious season. Yes, this season is more over the top, but not in a bad way. If I suddenly found myself ruling a kingdom in another world that I had always believed fictional, my incredulity would very likely make me a bit more prone to rashness, and in this season we see the characters branch out a little bit and not take themselves quite so seriously. The chemistry between them is strong, the storylines interesting and good at taking surprising turns, and the quips keep coming (Thank you, Margo!).
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2017Couldn't wait for Season 2 to come out on Netflix & not all episodes were available on Cable or Prime Video so we purchased the whole season instead. I'm glad we did, it's a good enough show to re-watch and we enjoy the series a lot. There are some plot lines / character developments I didn't personally like. There are also things in the show that can trigger viewers - like suicide / rape / mental health issues, so be aware of that. The way they did CGI / special effects isn't the best, but it's okay. The immersion is good. Overall, it's like an adult Harry Potter / Narnia series that doesn't take itself too seriously. Can't wait for the next season. 5/5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Viel besser als Harry Potter, leider eher unbekannte Serie

5.0 out of 5 stars At last an adult magical fantasy.
I absolutely love The The Magicians. I didn't actually see it right from the very beginning and stumbled across it as season 3 started. Straight away I was hooked. Immediately I purchased season 1 and after a short while season 2. I just keep watching them over and over again and again. It's a proper grown up magical fantasy series. Everyone's got problems just like real life so it's not just fun and fun games. It'll make you laugh and cry, well it certainly does me anyway. Absolutely in my top ten of rime fav tv series. Oh and I shall be ordering the books because the tv series is so good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leider nur 2 Staffeln....

5.0 out of 5 stars twisted and dark
Following on from Season 1 this show continues its twists and turns and once more the main character fumble from one blunder to the next - how unfortunate....... or is it? certainly somebody seems to find it entertaining enough but to find out who you will need to watch it.
Well filmed, well acted although (unsurprisingly) different from the books upon which it is based,
sit back relax and pass the little cakes!
