- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2024Brings back a lot of memories. I was stationed in Okinawa when this movie played at the PX Theater. It was fantastic to see a new movie over there. Mostly we had to watch older movies. This is the first time seeing this since 1974. The only thing showing now is the crappy remake.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2015Robert Aldrich's raucous, tough-as-nails classic drama with a wicked wit. About Paul Crew, played brilliantly by the late great Burt Reynolds at his charismatic best, he is a former pro football star that has ended as a gigolo for a young domineering rich bitch, well-played by Anitra Ford, Crew breaks up with her, slamming her face into door after she slaps him, then throwing her to the floor, and then stealing her expensive sports car and dumping it in the bay, after a high speed chase with the police. This of course lands him in prison for 18 months, where he discovers that a smiling sadistic Warden named Hazen, impressively played by the late Eddie Albert, has pulled some strings to get him in his prison, so he can coach his semi-pro football team made up from his guards. Crew refuses and get the hard treatment from the head guard, Captain Knauer, played superbly by the late Ed Lauter. The ruthless Warden Hazen then compels Crew to put together a team of prisoners to face his semi-pro team of brutal guards in a tune-up game. Crew finally agrees to do it, and his team dubbed the "Mean Machine," which is a collection of murderers and harden criminals who are about to play the dirtiest most outrageous game of football in cinematic history. Indeed the now legendary 47-minute gridiron grudge match which concludes the film will have you at the edge of your seat, and also rolling with laughter. It is a stunning piece of technical virtuosity thanks to Aldrich's skillful direction, and his clever use of split screen and slow-motion, as well as Michael Luciano's razor-sharp Oscar nominated editing. Sensational supporting performances from the late Michael Conrad, James Hampton, Harry Caesar, Richard Kiel, Bernadette Peters, Robert Tessier, Charles Tyner, John Steadman, Ray Nitschke, and Mike Henry. But this film belongs to Reynolds for his performance is pure perfection, he effortlessly shows off his machismo, his sense of humor, and his laid back good-ol' boy charm that made him the top cinematic superstar of the 70s. A great audience picture if there ever was one, and a most memorable gridiron, bone-crushing motion picture classic. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2024One of my favorite all time football movies. With the most familiar line "I told you I broke his f***ing neck!"
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024Definitely worth renting.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2022As a 12 year old in the late 1970’s I was thoroughly amazed that it took a prison movie—and a comedy (for the most part) no less—to give us/me the first truly great sports movie (the original MASH movie a very close, football game second). The 40 plus minute gridiron clash to close The Longest Yard (1974) holds up well, today, and should even please the football purists.
The DVD I received is Copyright Paramount 2017; and has commentary from Burt Reynolds and producer Albert S Ruddy. I was looking forward to hearing Burt tell some behind the scene stories and although I was expecting more genuine humor Burt was still charming and informative (and that laugh!). Al Ruddy was good, too, stating initially The Longest Yard was not intended to be a comedy. That fell upon the presence of Burt Reynolds and his immediate attitude on set. Yes, Burt Reynolds was that big a box office draw (in the 1970’s) and that important in the Hollywood food chain. The commentary was recorded after the Adam Sandler remake of The Longest Yard (2005 which, admittedly, I haven’t seen from beginning to end…) with Burt on board in the Nate Scarsboro role this time—played by Michael ‘Hill Street Blues’ Conrad in the original Yard.
Some quick tidbits from the original: I did not know Mike Henry (one of the guards; also in Smokey and The Bandit) was an ex NFL player: linebacker for the Rams.
Pepper Martin was a pro wrestler.
Bob Tessier really was a badass. Actually was a black belt in karate.
Anyways check this out if for some reason you haven’t. If you have seen the Longest Yard you know why you’re reading this and know what to do. I mean that in the nicest and most sensible way.
Character actor James Hampton is good (funny) as Caretaker. I always remember him as Michael J Fox’s dad in Teen Wolf.
Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen; Too Late The Hero; Kiss Me Deadly) deserves credit for proving he can direct comedy. Drama is here too. Not surprisingly Aldrich was a huge football fan. It shows.
Oh, and ironically, or is that coincidentally(?), the actor who forced Michael J Fox to add the initial is in The Longest Yard: Michael Fox is the game day announcer!
Like I said: tidbits.
I marked 4 stars to begin review.
I’m writing 5 stars now. The prison film gone the way of comedy sports drama is still just too well done to be ignored and is certainly very well remembered. Actually holds a special place in my youthful heart growing into a more mature avid film fan.
Plus, how can you not appreciate a movie that casts a Native American Indian, Washington (Huskies) legend, and ex all-American quarterback with the name Sonny Sixkiller!? Seriously, how cool is that?
By the way: Major League stole the California ‘Penal’ joke from Sixkiller, in The Longest Yard.
Crewe to Sonny: ‘where’d you play ball at?’
Sixkiller: Oklahoma State.
Crewe: Oh, the Cowboys?
Sixkiller: Oklahoma State Penitentiary.
Sonny Sixkiller gets to throw the ball too (once) for his efforts.
Also, another Sixkiller tidbit: Sonny is allowed to fish out of season in the state of Washington. Only Sixkiller! It’s in the commentary. Classic.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2019Paul "Wrecking" Crewe is a former star pro football quarterback, who walks out on his wealthy girlfriend Melissa in Palm Beach, Florida. He takes her Maserati-engined Citroën SM without permission and leads police on a car chase. Crewe is eventually caught and sentenced to 18 months in Citrus State Prison.
The convicts disrespect Crewe because he was dismissed from the NFL for point shaving. The warden, Rudolph Hazen, is a football fanatic who manages a semi-pro team of prison guards. He wants Crewe to help coach the team and clinch a championship. Responding to pressure from the head guard and coach, Wilhelm Knauer, a reluctant Crewe eventually agrees to play in an exhibition game. Crewe forms a prison team that includes Samson, a former professional weightlifter, and Connie Shokner, a serial killer and martial arts expert.
Lots of fun! It is an adventure film as well as a comedy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 70s 4k blu ray.
I've always known this film as the mean machine. IMDB calls it mean machine.
The mean machine is a great film. It's a lovely looking 4k bluray into the bargain.
Burt is at the top of his game.
The hdr looks so natural.
A fun film.
A great film

5.0 out of 5 stars A great movie.
Have seen this one (the original with Burt Reynolds) many years ago and was very happy to finally get this in my collection. Good quality audio and video. Just had to make sure my hardware supported the format - no problems. VERY GOOD COMMUNICATION with the vendor. Even though it was late in coming, they kept me informed of the status, and even offered to send another shipment in case mine was lost and even pay the shipping charges to return the second one if I ended up with two? From my side, the Vendor is highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story well told
This edition of the original 'The Longest Yard' is worth every paisa spent. Nothing to say about the movie as it was a classic when it came out. For the uninitiated, and those who have seen the latest version of this movie, it is not fast-paced, but the roles have been very well executed. Watch it for the performances of actors; and the bonus features are very likeable as well.
