The Neuroscience of Adolescence (Cambridge Fundamentals of Neuroscience in Psychology) 1st Edition, Kindle Edition
As scientific inquiry and public interest in the adolescent brain grows, so too does the need for an accessible textbook that communicates the growing research on this topic. The Neuroscience of Adolescence is a comprehensive educational tool for developmental cognitive neuroscience students at all levels as it details the varying elements that shape the adolescent brain. Historical notions of adolescence have focused on the significant hormonal changes that occur as one transitions from childhood to adolescence, but new research has revealed a more nuanced picture that helps inform our understanding of how the brain functions across the lifespan. By emphasizing the biological and neurobiological changes that occur during adolescence, this book gives students a holistic understanding of this developmental window and uniquely discusses the policy implications of neuroscience research on the lives of young people today.

The book provides a general overview of a number of domains pertaining to neuroscience from early childhood through middle adulthood. IMO, it does not pertain to adolescence enough to title the book as such. There is a lot of extra information to sort through that could be excluded from this 300+ page book to make it more specific to the neuroscience of adolescence.

Needs more attention on neuroscience techniques & visuals

Bought this book to give me some background reading before I start my child and adolescent development module in neuroscience and psychology. Although the book is long (314 pages), I would’ve expected a lot more neuroimaging data. Sometime the detail is basic. There are some good drawn diagrams of neuroplasticity, LTP. Two major theorists Jean Piaget & Lev Vygotsky received very basic comparisons over 2 pages! Synaptogenesis received 1 page, which is a very hot topic in neuroscience for research on the adolescent brain and development. Two major conditions Autism & ADHD received 7 pages between them - which is not great at all. A lot of data that was analysed came from research in the early 2000’s, this was exceptionally disappointing because the research is revealing very important data that is omitted from this book.
I expected more! Guess I shall stick to reading peer reviewed research articles!
