Emmy Lou at her best. And, the disc is a good product.

On this magical live album, Emmylou and the Nash Ramblers pay tribute to the very old (Stephen Foster), the new (Steve Earle, John Fogerty and Bruce Springsteen) and bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, with covers of three of his songs. Of course, the album is a seamless blend of the old and the new.

The music goes from uptempo country rock like Earle's Guitar Town, to lovely yodelling as on Cattle Call, the Tex Owens song. There is also the lovely lilting country pop of Guess Things Happen That Way, the sensitive treatment of Springsteen's Mansion On The Hill and the thrilling instrumental Scotland, the first of the Monroe numbers.

Emmylou talks a bit more between songs here than on her other brilliant live album, the great Spyboy. The playing is superb throughout, as in the buoyant Montana Cowgirl, the slow and melancholy ballad like Strangers (first recorded by the Everly Brothers), and the propulsive Lodi, the old Creedence hit.

A highlight of At The Ryman is the soul stirring Calling My Children Home, just Emmylou and the male backing vocals. This one reminds me of the biblical expression about Rachel weeping for her children, because they're there no more. Next, there is the most beautiful guitar picking on If I Could Be There, a tender love song.

Walls Of Time and Get Up John are both energetic Monroe compositions, performed with feeling and gusto. The medley of Hard Life and Abraham, Martin and John is done in a more folkie style and her voice really soars here. The album concludes with the rhythmic train song, Smoke Along The Track.

At The Ryman is a triumph of excellent material interpreted with expertise and feeling. The CD booklet contains background notes by Emmylou on this performance plus photographs and information on her and the members of the Nash Ramblers.

    Enjoyed songs and style

From Emmylou's "Well, bless your hearts!" response to a cheering audience and the jaunty number (Steve Earle's "Guitar Town") that opens the concert to the great closing number ("Smoke Along the Track") this live concert CD captures the excitement and spontaneity of an Emmylou Harris concert. It was recorded in 1991 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

There's a great variety of music: cowboy songs, three Bill Monroe bluegrass numbers, two stunning a cappella ballads (including the best version of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times" I've ever heard), Springsteen's "Mansion on the Hill," a beautiful medley of Nanci Griffith's "It's a Hard Life Wherever You Go" and "Abraham, Martin and John," John Fogerty's "Lodi" and more. The fiddling throughout (by Sam Bush) is to die for, the harmony vocals are exquisite, plus you get Emmylou's charming patter between songs.

If you've never had the thrill of seeing Emmylou in concert, grab the opportunity next time she's in your area. She always tours with a great band, and she plays really long sets with her voice and stage presence gaining in strength throughout the evening. She obviously loves performing. If you can't get to a concert, this CD is the next best thing and is highly recommended.

EmmyLou has been a gift to us for many many years. I’m so glad this tape was found to share the time of legends-in the Ryman no less. Savor it

All of the strengths that have won Emmylou Harris so many loyal admirers come together on this album, and are amplified by the energy and intensity of a great live recording.
Harris has always had exceptional taste in selecting material to record, and "At the Ryman" is no exception. She draws on great songwriters old (Stephen Foster) and new (Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen) to present a program that is so strong it's hard to pick out the highlights. Fans of Bill Monroe will be delighted with the three Monroe tunes on the album. Perhaps the peak of the many high points is a beautiful medley of Nanci Griffith's "It's a Hard Life Wherever You Go" and Richard Holler's "Abraham, Martin and John."
Harris is in superb voice throughout the concert, and once again has surrounded herself with a brilliant group of musicians, the Nash Ramblers. Led by bassist Roy Huskey, and featuring some brilliant fiddling from Sam Bush on several tracks, the Ramblers are worthy successors to Harris's Hot Band of the 70's and 80's.
Lovers of traditional music of any sort--folk, bluegrass, etc.--will want this album, as will anyone interested in an introduction to Harris's artistry. And if any Harris fans don't own this album yet--well, the "click to order" button is just up the page.

For twenty years I have appreciated Emmylou Harris' ability to bring a song to fruition; to articulate it in such a way that it practically sings itself. Not only are her studio albums each an experience in themselves; a journey through a set of tunes that she masterfully presents, but her live performances tend to be 'events.' The concert at the Ryman recorded here was an almost perfect moment. She brought together for this set songs from artists as various as Bill Monroe and Bruce Springsteen, and made the performance personable as well as musically astute. There is an emotionality to her music that I find 'healing,' 'consoling' and 'invigorating.' All of these characteristics can be experienced in these tracks. If you like Emmylou, this CD is a gem. If you've never listened to her before, this CD is a good entry-point.
