Editorial Reviews
COME FROM AWAY is the breathtaking new musical written by Canadians Irene Sankoff and David Hein and produced by Tony-nominated director Christopher Ashley (Memphis). In a heartbeat, 38 planes with 6,579 passengers were stranded in Newfoundland. The locals opened their hearts and homes, hosting this international community of strangers-spurring unexpected camaraderie in extraordinary circumstances. On September 11, 2001 the world stopped. On September 12, their stories moved us all.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2024One thing I hate (strong word, I know, but appropriate here) is the "acceptable" business practice of First-Tier Streaming Services purchasing the film rights for a hit movie or Broadway musical, and then 10-12 months later, release the finished project ONLY on THEIR streaming service.
I can list many award-winning movies or film adaptations of hit Broadway musicals that have been beautifully transformed from the "theatre" to the "movies", but if you don't subscribe to the Streaming Service that "owns" this film, you will never see it. Ever. Never.
One of these services brought the Tony-Award winning musical, "Come from Away," released it on their service, and that's where it will stay, apparently. There is no DVD or Blu-Ray release for this film. And that's a real shame. The production and direction (and the acting!) are all first-rate. But you can't see it or buy it or rent it unless you watch it on said streamer.
Why do the streaming companies do this? Pure profit/greed, I suppose. But the rest of the world is missing out on some truly terrific movies/musicals because of this "business practice."
Will Disney+ ever release "Hamilton" on any other format? Will we ever see the Academy-Award winning Best Picture "CODA" outside of Apple TV+? (It's the ONLY time in the history of the Academy Awards and the motion picture industry where the Best Picture winner will NOT be released or available for viewing on another format.
I'm sure there's many more, but it breaks my heart that this wonderful, life-inspiring musical/drama will never have a Life Beyond AppleTV+. I bought the CD. I even bought the book version "Come from Away: Welcome to the Rock / An Inside Look at the Hit Musical." But neither of these replace the warmth and emotions I feel when I watch the movie version of the Broadway show. (To date, I was able to watch it a few times during my 30-day test drive of the streaming service.)
Go ahead, seearch the Internet. Your results for a DVD or Blu-Ray version will come up Zero. You can't order it from Amazon. It's not available on Amazon Prime. You can't buy or rent it on Apple's OWN iTunes store. It just doesn't exist outside of Apple's little Cloud.
Shame on them. I know AppleTV+ bought the rights when it premiered earlier that January at the Sundance Film Festival for a record-breaking $25,000,000 USD, but c'mon, loosen up, Apple!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2024This cast recording is fantastic. 9/11 was such a sad day but this story is so encouraging about the Canadian airport that welcomed travelers who couldn't get into US air space due to the 9/11 attacks. The songs are great and so emotional from a cast of 12 people.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2017This is an amazing musical. It's one of the best musicals to come out in a very long time. The cast is fabulous! Listen to Jenn Colella sing "Me and the Sky" and you end up singing along! It's the best of human kindness and we need this so much, right now. I listen to this to offset the noise coming from the news these days. It's poignancy comes through in "I Am Here." "Blankets and Bedding" will have you laughing out loud at a situation that you never, ever thought you'd find humor in. The "38 Planes Reprise" has a beat that mimics a plane taking off into the sky. Remembering what it felt like to look up into the sky the week after 9/11, I remember the emptiness and awfulness of not seeing any planes flying up above. Especially at night. When you hear Jenn sing "We just crossed the Canadian border. Welcome back to the U. S of A!" your heart will skip a beat. At this point, I usually burst into tears and I'm always in my car at a stoplight, much to my chagrin. Hoping, no one is watching or listening if my window is down. The bar music with Celtic flutes, and a Scottish/Irish flare will make you smile. This is pure joy!! It will renew your hope in human nature.
I can't wait until I can actually see this musical. I hope it flies into Chicago soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2024This is a great production. I would love to see it done. I love this story and how all the people on the island helped each other out
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2017I saw the show in its pre-Broadway try-out in La Jolla, California, and was blown away. I had recently come back from a trip to Newfoundland, and even went to Gander, so I was extremely interested in seeing the story played out on stage.
It was exhilarating to see a show so full of hope and humanity. It means even more now than it did when I saw it. And the music beautifully captures the folk music of Newfoundland, with authentic instruments.
The staging is very fluid and innovative, and the cast play multiple roles. But even without seeing the show, you can enjoy the CD. Since the show is mostly sung-through, the CD wisely includes much of the dialogue that leads from one song to another.
I love that a "small" show without stars has become a huge hit on Broadway, and it's mainly due to word of mouth. It will lift your soul.
I also have to say that even though I have been all over the world, the people of Newfoundland (and not just Gander) were THE most helpful, friendly, and incredible people I have ever met. I can absolutely understand how and why the town pulled together to give us this wonderful lesson in sharing and caring.

5.0 out of 5 stars un grande Musical --
é allora tutti insieme O Canada---our home and native land… e basta canticchiare sempre Blame Canada...
