CBD: A Patient's Guide to Medicinal Cannabis--Healing without the High Kindle Edition
This practical, accessible guide to using CBD-dominant cannabis contains a wealth of information for both first-time explorers and experienced patients who want to know more about safely treating a number of health conditions with remarkable results and low to no psychoactivity or negative side effects. CBD (cannabidiol) is a component of cannabis that can provide relief for conditions such as seizures, pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression, arthritis, and a number of other issues. This book offers guidance on various forms of the medicine such as oil infusions, alcohol-based tinctures, capsules, and CO2 concentrated extracts. The information is organized by health condition and also by recommended CBD-rich strains, which do not produce the "highs" associated with THC. With dosage suggestions, potential side effects and contraindications, and the pharmacology of the plant, this is an essential guide for both doctors and patients looking for a nontoxic alternative to opiate-based pain medications and other pharmaceuticals.
While cannabis has been used for medicinal and recreational purposes for thousands of years, only in the last fifty years have scientists begun to shed light on the chemistry of the plant and its interactions with the human body. Research has led to the discovery of a whole new system in the body, the endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in mediating functions such as appetite, immunity, mood, pain response, and memory. The authors present case studies, interviews with doctors who prescribe cannabidiol products, and the latest research regarding other active phytocannabinoids and terpenoids present in cannabis that are being studied for medical use. They also address the difference between CBD products derived from industrial hemp or in a lab, versus those made from medical marijuana using the whole plant.
In addition to offering the most up-to-date and comprehensive information on CBD-dominant cannabis therapy for humans, this book is the first to offer guidance for using the medicine for animals, with suggestions for dosage and delivery and useful forms and strains for common health issues in pets. Finally, the authors take a look at the future of cannabis medicine, charting trends in the legalization movement and suggesting how CBD might be used to fight the opioid epidemic.

Review
—Joel Samuels, MD
“In my practice of pain medicine, I have witnessed the positive impact that cannabis can have on chronic pain. It is increasingly evident that it provides a safer alternative to opioids. The breadth and scope of this book is impressive. The historical perspective is most interesting and the technical information deeply informative.”
—Robert Hines, MD, Diplomate, American Board of Pain Medicine; Diplomate, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; co-founder, Bay Area Pain Medical Associates
“CBD: A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis is the most comprehensive publication
on the science and therapeutic use of cannabinoids yet produced. It extensively covers the science of cannabinoid chemistry and the endocannabinoid system, and is supported by more than four hundred peer-reviewed research articles. I recommend it for any provider actively prescribing medicinal cannabis formulas.”
—Jeffry L. Anderson, MD
“A magnificent approach to the use of medical cannabis in both humans and pets, not only for caregivers, patients, and their families, but also for skeptical physicians. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in discovering the real power of this millennial medicinal plant.”
—Dr. Gisela Kuester, neurologist and epileptologist, clinical research director at Daya Foundation, Chile
“A clearly written and informative book on a complicated subject. Medical marijuana is not a panacea, and is not a substitute for the extraordinary skills of modern scientific medicine, but as this fine book shows, cannabis in its many forms is now an important part of the Western medical tradition.”
—Dale Pendell, author of Pharmako/Poeia: Plant Powers, Poisons, and Herbcraft
“CBD: A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis is a well-written guidebook to one of the most exciting compounds in cannabis medicine today. This book is comprehensive enough to be a useful reference to the layperson and expert alike, on matters relating to CBD as well as cannabis in general. Excellent job!”
—Owen Shibata, MD
“CBD is a hot topic right now, but there’s a tremendous amount of misinformation about how it works. This book clears up the confusion, and gives you expert guidance that could make a profound difference in your life.”
—Max Simon, founder of Green Flower Media
“I love this book. It is both beautiful and practical, grounded in all the right qualities needed to make working with CBD easy and effective.”
—Uwe Blesching PhD, author of Cannabis Health Index
“This book will put patients and doctors on common ground when it comes to CBD. After reading it, patients will be ready to have an informed discussion with their doctor about how to use medical cannabis.”
—Scott Giannotti, founder of Cannabis and Hemp Association
“This comprehensive book combines scientific evidence with practical advice for specific health challenges and preventive measures. I highly recommend this guidebook for people who are considering CBD treatments, and for health care practitioners who want to learn more about CBD for their patients.”
—Sondra Barrett, PhD, author of Secrets of Your Cells: Discovering Your Body’s Inner Intelligenceand Ultimate Immunity: Supercharge Your Body's Natural Healing Powers
“A testament to the source of Leonard Leinow’s passionate stewardship of CBD-rich cannabis products, CBD: A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis reveals the scope and profundity of this game-changing component of medical marijuana.”
—Laurie Vollen, MD, MPH, founder of Naturally Healing MD
“Leonard Leinow’s powerful advocacy for medicinal cannabis places us squarely on the cusp of accessing what is potentially the most incredibly diverse medicine that comes from one plant. We as individuals, families, therapists, doctors, and vets, need the power of informed choice to use this unparalleled plant appropriately—to heal ailments and save lives, to relieve pain and provide dignity in life passing.”

She has written about ecovillages, native rights and social justice issues in a variety of newspapers, indigenous journals, and anthologies including E-The Environmental Magazine, Bridges Journal, El Reportero, The Rising Nepal, World Rainforest Movement Bulletin, Quechua Network, and Cultural Survival Quarterly. She was the first graduate of the Cornerstone Doula School, one of the most rigorous programs in the country, focusing on natural birth and a holistic model of care.
She is engaged variously as writer, editor, teacher, midwife assistant and mother when not attempting yoga postures or learning how to garden. Juliana Birnbaum and her daughters Lîla and Serenne live in California’s San Geronimo Valley, and she is a founding member of a collective permaculture farm in Costa Rica.
Leonard Leinow has three decades of experience cultivating and studying medicinal cannabis. He founded Synergy Wellness in 2008, a not-for-profit medical cannabis collective in Northern California with more than four thousand patient members. Synergy is dedicated to handcrafting artisanal, organic, and all-natural products made from the whole plant. Synergy Wellness specializes in products rich in CBD, the non-psychoactive molecule with healing properties. He calls cannabidiol the “get-well molecule,” in contrast to THC, the “get-high molecule.”
Leonard is known as an early pioneer in CBD-rich cannabis products, and his proprietary blends are recommended by doctors throughout California for their patients with cancer, pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and many other disease states. For his seemingly magical ability to recommend the right product for each individual patient, he has been called “The Wizard of Woodacre.”
Leonard brings a unique spiritual perspective to his work. He lived in India for 5 years while on a spiritual quest, studying the religious and cultural aspects of ancient civilizations. He has traveled to thirty-five countries around the world in search of knowledge and wisdom. His studies include more than three decades of practice in shamanic, tantric, and martial arts. For five years, he was a professional deep-tissue body worker, which began his focus on the healing arts.
Leonard earned his Bachelor’s degree from UCLA in Engineering, with a minor in Art. He applied his engineering background to his early career as an executive search consultant, recruiting healthcare and technical experts for corporations nationwide. Throughout his life, he has also been dedicated to artistic expression. His bronze sculpture, ceramics, and paintings have been exhibited and sold in fine art galleries around the world.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2018CBD – A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis is very highly recommended.
This authoritative resource is a must-read for anyone wishing to learn about what all the hype is regarding medicinal cannabis and particularly about CBD (its non psycho-active component) that can significantly help with many health issues which traditional western medicine is not able to: western medicine is all about profit and health “management” (using a whole slew of artificial chemical drugs), it is not about actual healing, big pharma purposefully keeps us sick in order to sell us all those drugs and to keep us on them.
This new and well researched 317 page book is clearly written and easy to follow.
Many advanced medical studies from around the world have confirmed multiple times the many healing properties of CBD - so much so, that here in the States, big pharma is rushing to cash in and create an artificial chemical “equivalent” to natural CBD. This big pharma CBD however is unlikely to work well because the natural synergy workings of all the combined phytocannabinoids (100+ identified so far) that are likely needed to work and really heal would be completely lost in the artificial CBD-only pill they plan to produce.
By the way, cannabis has been used medicinally for over 5000 years.
Thank you and kudos for this timely text.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2020I had no idea there was so much development in the field of Cannabis and CBD production. I discovered this easy to read book about the topic at a poignant time in my life. It has led me into the ever-growing development and discovery of Cannabis and all the components of the subject. I had no idea the science around cannabis and its many and ever-progressing scientific knowledge had progressed to this level until I dug into this book. I am very grateful to the kind hearts that devoted their lives to helping others through this miracle plant and all its beneficial medicinal qualities. Terpenes were revelatory. I am learning so many different properties and potential of cannabis in the treatment of p.t.s.d. and on and on. If you are looking to deepen the 'knowledge pockets' of your mind, then dig in and grab this book. Not too heady and riddled with jargon that it's inaccessible. Many thanks to this brilliant and well executed work of science!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2023This is a great book to read to give you a "in the frontdoor" amount of knowledge but honestly a pwesons own prefernce is going to make your prychases the very best for you-Your relationship with a very knowlegable budtender is going to help you out the other way. The rest is up to you; to know what YOUR body needs.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2017I feel so fortunate to have discovered this marvelous resource. This book is a gift. It is a clear and concise primer for anyone, who like me, is a late bloomer in the study of CBD. I have practiced homeopathy for decades but am very motivated to learn all I can about this amazing plant medicine. Leonard Leinow imparts a lifetime of information in this detailed guide and provides you with all the information you need to get started on your journey. You will learn everything you need to about different strains and dosing methods and the entourage effect and what conditions are responsive to CBD. With the suppression of scientific studies in the USA due to the Class A Narcotics scheduling of THC/ Marijuana, we are way behind other countries, like Israel, where CBD is in regular clinical application for everything from the diseases common to aging, MS, seizure disorders and so much more. I downloaded it on my iPad and bought a copy to lend to friends and skeptics alike.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2018This is a state-of-the-art go-to for all questions CBD. It’s a unique reference guide, loaded with advice on how and why to use this medicine, and the latest scientific research in this fast-evolving field.
It’s for those who’ve wondered what to do, facing so many choices.
One might wonder such things as: Is this product clean or even organic, and how would one really know? How safe is it, and when? What percentage of CBD vs. THC is in certain strain of CBD? What is CBD, anyway, and what effects can it have? Health-wise? Head-wise? How long can it last? How do you take it? Does the answer depend on what strain you buy, or amount you take, or method of taking it? Does it matter who you buy from? Is there a “right” dose? And what can one expect, and over what time period?
Readers will also get stories of how others have used CBD for healing, and examples and templates to apply for their own situations. Truly a landmark book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2019A bit hard to understand if you aren't a medical expert or highly knowledgable. Bought at the recommendation of my health/life coach. Good reference.
