Great platform for medium to long runs, but upper needs improvement.

Great platform for medium to long runs, but upper needs improvement.
I've been running on these for a few months now and overall I've got mixed feelings on these Altra Lone peak 3.5's. For me, these are great for long days on my feet on technical tracks or hard surfaces. The running I typically do is a real mix. Some gravel 4wd tracks and easy farm tracks but mostly very technical steep back country/bush single tracks. The technical tracks are a mix of deep mud, rivers, tree roots, rocks and exposed volcanic mountain sides. See photos. Runs are between 1 and 5 hours. I'm 75kg, 180cm tall and have medium wide forefoot with high arch. I've been running in 0 - 4mm drop shoes for about 5 years. The good: - Very good traction on a wide variety of surfaces (best I've tried since Inov8 Trailroc 235's). - Stable platform (if laces tightened well) - Outsole has very little wear after a few hundred km. - Very comfortable platform - leaves my legs and feet feeling good after long runs - Like the gaiter connections - Generally comfortable straight out of the box. - Appear to have robust upper. The bad: - Fitting and sizing. I went 1/2 a size up and find the size comfortable for width, but I still find my toes smash into the front on downhills. I have really tied the laces up hard to to combat this, but it affects the comfort. I believe this is because of the very (overly) padded rear heal cup. - Breathability/water drainage. The lone peak 3.5 is just OK for breathability and water drainage. They get quite warm on hot days, and though it's not a big problem on most runs, I find they hold too much water for runs where I spend a lot of time crossing rivers and in mud. The shoes with the uppers I love are the Inov8 Trailroc 235's. - Feel a little heavy. This is more a feeling than reality probably. It hasn't really affected my pace, but it just feels like a shoe for comfort on long days. Overall they're good, but not great. If the upper was more breathable and secure I would probably give these a five star rating as I love the comfort and traction. Hopeful for version 4.

The Lone Peak 3.5 are doing great. Use them everyday twice a day while I workout. I run, sprint, do calisthenics, walk, jump, and hike. The shoes fit great and feel very comfortable throughout the use. The shoes have an amazing grip on the grass, concrete sidewalks, asphalt roads, and sandy Georgia soil. Have not worn gaiters with the shoes so no details on the Velcro fastener or buckle on the laces. I am wearing cotton socks and they are not tearing or balling up under my feet do to sweat or because of the insole. The wide box for gives toes space for airflow and expansion. The feet stay seated firmly to the rear of the shoe. I recommend these shoes to everyone.

I have trouble finding shoes that don't hurt the bottom of my feet (ball of my foot and heel). I also don't like the constricting feel of shoes in general (prefer sandals). But I am a runner and after a lot of searching, these Altras are awesome. I run in them every day. They're made wide + wide toe box, so they don't feel constricting like most / narrower shoes. They feel roomy & comfy like sandals. That's my take as someone with narrow feet, mind you. Great for running on & off road.

I had been attempting to break in new hiking boots, but would get some gnarly blisters on my middle toes that were quite painful. I was in desperation mode as I was getting ready to hike a week long section of the AT in North Carolina and knew that the boots I had weren't going to cut it. After doing more research I noticed that more and more long distance hikers were switching to trail runners, specifically Altra Lone Peaks. I purchased the Altra Lone Peak 3.5's in a last ditch effort to save my feet and boy am I glad I made the switch. I only got about 10 miles in them before the AT and had zero foot issues during the 75 miles in NC other than a small hot spot on the big toes around day 4 or 5....a bit of tape prevented them from forming into full blown blisters. I should note that like other reviewers, these shoes do run small and I purchased a size 12 shoe whereas my normal everyday shoe is size 11. I was worried that the 12's would be too small and I should have gone with a 12.5, but they work fine and I have over a hundred backpacking miles in them with no issues. I also want to mention that I paired them with Injinji Liners and Darn Tough Hiking socks.

These were a game changer, My first time wearing a Zero Drop shoe. It took several minutes to adjust to the feel of them. I'll admit the first initial steps felt very weird. Just keep walking, after 15 minutes or so, they begin to feel very natural and so very comfy. A week after receiving them. I went on a 32 mile trek with 26 lb Pack weight, Wore Injinji liners, Darn tough trekking socks, with the altra 3.5's and my feet have never ever been more at home and comfortable in all the years I've been hiking or even walking for recreational . No Hotspots , No blisters, Not even sweaty feet. These performed better than I could have expected. These were my first pair of Altra's Ever worn. I would buy these again. I normally wear a size 8 in most everything, a size 8.5 in Merrill, So reading the reviews I ordered a men's 9. They are almost a perfect fit. There is some room above my toes, But in hiking long distances, your feet swell, and I like to wear a liner sock, So the added space is just perfect to accomodate

I absolutely love these shoes. I wore the Altra 3.0 for two years and they held up great throughout. I recently bought the 3.5 and am very happy with the new ones. The zero drop takes some time to get used to, but I’m a convert and don’t plan on going back. I love the wide toe box too, it’s very comfortable on the toes and I feel that I get a good response when running or working out. They do indeed run a half size small, I’m a 12.5 normally but got a size 13 which fit snug. I would definitely recommend this shoe.
