- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2013Let me say that I purchased this book as an impulse buy without even reading much of the blurb, because something about it intrigued me, and I am a pushover for suspense books featuring strong women characters.
Told in flashbacks, we first encounter Claire as a teenager walking to school, then viciously snatched and thrown into a car which speeds away. There is a witness, but nothing pans out and time moves on. Fast-forward ten years, and a beautiful woman picks up a down-on-his-luck detective in a bar. Behind the initial intent of their hook-up, the two make a lasting impression on each other, but all that Connor has to show for his time with Claire is a paper scribbled with her family's address. His meeting with her family shocks him as well as them. He has met a young woman presumed to be dead, who has disappeared into thin air. Unbeknownst to anyone, Claire cannot break the invisible chains that bind her to her kidnapper, long after the missing girl becomes an adult. With the help of Mitch, a P.I. who has become close to the Fletcher family, the determined detective tries to unravel the clues, and find Claire Fletcher.
my thoughts: I loved this book! Sure it has a disturbing plot concerning the violation of kidnapped girls/women, but Ms. Regan does not go for gratuitous violence or sexual denigration. Despite the excessive tv coverage in past years of kidnapped females in this country who have been rescued, the author actually first started writing this book many years ago before those even took place.
I liked how Claire's character was not portrayed as one-dimensional. She was sometimes a broken victim, but she also kept her sense of self, and allowed a stubbornness to emerge time and again. The plot was well-developed and moved quickly, which kept me turning the pages well into the night to finish. I was eager to see how Ms. Regan would tie up all the loose ends, and she did a satisfying job. The only negativity I could put my finger on concerned the instant chemistry between Claire and Connor. While I could see Claire enamored with a gentle soul who didn't want to just use her body, I wasn't sure if a hardened detective would sustain the drive needed to recover her. Of course that is why we call fiction escapism; we allow authors some leeway with plot development if they can state a strong case for it. All in all, I feel this book is deserving in the categories it is nominated for, and I did vote for it without the author asking me to.
An exciting, intense, fun read that I recommend highly!!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2014Lucky for me I started this kindle book on a workday where my only job was to sit with a client while they did their job and help them a little when needed. That's because I could not put the book down and read it in about 6 hours. It was pretty darn good.
I had downloaded a sample, and thought I wasn't going to like it. It started out a little slow and just a little weird, but after 3 chapters I was hooked and couldn't wait to see what happened next because it was unpredictable.
It centers around a young woman in her 10th year of captivity with a serious whack job pedophile pervert who abducted her when she was 15 and a cop she meets on a night she sneaks away because after all of this time in captivity she is allowed some freedom. Very original way the author has formed the storyline. It switches between the present, and the past beginning from the time she was abducted and moves along until the past catches up with the present.
Very well put together and easy to follow. I would highly recommend this psychological thriller to anyone who enjoys this genre. It does contain some violence and disturbing subject matter, however it is not too graphic. Just enough so you get the picture.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2013Finding Claire Fletcher grabbed me from the very beginning. It is an incredible journey through the life of a young woman who was abducted and held by her captor for ten years. This is fiction but was so well done that I really thought I was reading a true story. It is not always an easy read but it is a very compelling one.
At the age of 15 Claire is abducted off the street. For ten years she lives with her abuser. For a good part of that time he keeps her locked up and abuses her in ways that were tough to read and imagine anyone having to go through. Claire suffers not only physical and sexual abuse but the psychological trauma he puts her through is scary. She tries to escape but eventually gives up after several failed attempts, not because of what he does to her but because when that stops working, he controls her in ways that are unimaginable. Often without even touching her. After about five years, she starts to gain some freedom. She can even leave the ramshackle house he is keeping her in but she always returns. Daily she struggles with coming to terms with what he has done to her and all that she has endured - how and when will it end. Over the years she tries to reach out to people hoping that someone will let her family know she is alive. The consequences of her doing that are so beyond her imagination that she soon learns he will never let her go. One of the people she reaches out to, in a last ditch attempt to be found, is Connor.
Connor is a detective who meets Claire in a bar one night. There is an instant connection between them. They spend a platonic night together and much to his disappointment she is gone in the morning but she leaves him her home address. To his surprise he discovers that the woman he met was abducted ten years before. To prove it's her he has her DNA ran through the data base and finds out it is Claire Fletcher he met. Now the journey begins, as to why she isn't coming home. Where is she. And who has her. Fearing that she has put his life in jeopardy, Claire contacts him again, telling him to protect himself and to forget about her. He wants to set a trap, he wants the man to come after him. He thinks he's prepared but when the abductor is able to knock him out and tie him up, he realizes he has underestimated the man's skill, determination and his sanity.
Claire gets to the point she doesn't really care anymore so she stands up to the man who has made her life hell. He does not take that lightly and makes her pay in ways she can't imagine. It's not until she realizes that she's not his only victim that she vows to save the life of another girl and to ensure he pays for all he has done to her and every other girl.
It is a book that I will remember for a very long time. Lisa has woven an incredible story. It is a must read. I am absolutely looking forward to her next book, Aberration.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2024If you like murder mysteries then you will love the storyline of this book. There is graphic sexual assaults of children and graphic violence, then this book is not for you. I have worked in law enforcement for 26 yrs and the investigative part of this book fascinated me. The characters are described so intricately that I picture each and everyone. I like the humor detectives Boggs and Stryker have. If I'm going to read a violent murder book I need some humor and am happy I got that. I'm looking forward to Claire and Conner's relationship and what happens next.

3.0 out of 5 stars The book is gripping but I couldn't digest a few things. Hence 3 as my rating.
Spoilers ahead... The book is gripping and fast paced. But I cudnt digest the fact that Claire stays put for 10 years before getting out of hell.
The book has a good start but dwells too much into the torture.
For all the crimes he had committed I think he got away easily and cudnt take the fact that his family did nothing considering the vast amount of money and power they had.

5.0 out of 5 stars First-rate psychological thriller
A first-rate thriller that draws you completely into the tortuous existence led by Claire, held captive by a deranged criminal for ten years. This was a completely absorbing read, told so well by Regan that I felt I was right there watching the action unfold. It is brutal at times, but that would be the reality of such a situation. The book drew me in not only from the premise in the blurb, but the conundrum this presents; if Claire has enough freedom to meet Connor in a bar and go home with him, why does she not simply return to her family? The answers are heartbreaking as they become clear, and Regan does a superb job in analysing her protagonist's psychology as a victim.
I won't say too much about the plot, so as not to give away any spoilers, but I will say that the relationship between Connor and Claire, ignited on that first night, is the driving force that propels the action forwards and I was really rooting for both of them. Claire's seemingly omnipotent abductor is a horrifying and sinister presence, and my jaw dropped at the revelations that unfolded and the tension that ramps up towards the heart-in-your mouth conclusion. This novel has such strong emotions in it that it's hard to describe, making you palpably feel Claire's sadness, but also the hope that exists in the world.
I felt at the end that the title had a dual nature; there is the literal search for Claire spearheaded by Connor, but also Claire's search for the girl that she was before her gruesome ordeal. A brilliant and thought-provoking debut.

Wow. From start to finish, this was a thrilling, frightening, and amazingly written book. I literally spent every second of my free time reading it and I strongly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phew! Lisa Regan up close and terrifying
As a devotee of Lisa Regan's Josie Quinn series (yes, I've read them all), I was delighted to come across this novel, and dived right in.
Within a chapter or so, I was wondering whether I wanted to do this to myself - but I couldn't stop turning the pages.
Regan hurls herself, and us, the readers, into the almost incomprehensible world of a monster. We experience his depravity almost as though we were there with him, such is the strength and skill of Regan's writing.
She's brilliant, courageous and unflinching in her portrayal of one of society's most abhorrent forms of criminal behaviour, creating characters so real that we feel we've known them for years.
No spoilers from me.
This is a brilliantly crafted novel but it's not an easy read.
Brace yourself.
Dive in if you dare.
